Maybe confirmation of details from someone closer to this incident than us (wysiwyg?) would help thing clarity wise.

We all know what types of things the media outlets say to make seems more interesting. Im sure “The Sun” today reported he was on the runway about to take off when the police “swooped” on the “full” pilot who was about to hand fly the jumo to New York….

They don’t need to ditch either name do they ? Air France and KLM didn’t…

I am told that either side wanted to keep its own name without alterations to ensure no customer confusion. That led to talks break down in early stages.

virgin and bmi dont roll of the tounge easily together IMHO.

I’d have thought this news would cause Sir Richard Branson to prick up his ears ? After all, it’s already been reported his interest in merging Virgin Atlantic with BMI.

They held actual meetings to discuss the potential of it. I understand it broke up quickly when neither side would let their name dissappear and want the other to dissappear. Two very strong willed guys up front there….

A quote from Tim Lee, managing director of the company taken from the BBC link above:

“We know there is a lot of leakage from south Wales to other airports like Bristol”.

    AHEM… Anyway…

I hate to sound cynical, and I really do hope this is a serious new airline and they succeed, but I can’t help but wonder just how serious they are when I look at their website (flyforbeans.com) and see the way it’s written. It doesn’t project the image, to me at least, of a company that’s even remotely serious! Maybe I pay a little too much attention to words, it just seems that way.

I do hope they are serious though, although I must say, the name is horrendous! “So who are you flying with on your holidays?” “Oh, we’re flying with Flyforbeans.com.”

    Paul

Agreed. Surely the phrase they are looking for is “for peanuts”??

Not so simple I think… I’m pretty certain that anti-competition rules would put some pretter large obstacles in the way of a BA takeover of BMI, whilst I suspect that [for example] SRB would find it somewhat easier were he interested.

    Andy

Indeed i think any muppet can see VIR and BMA fit better together than BAW and BMA IMHO. I think VIR and to an extent BMA go for a quality of service approach especially for business etc.

Im not saying BA does not go for quality but VIR and BMA, at least to me, have a more unique/customer care feel to them.

Gill Airways operated BFS-BHD about 7-8 Years ago with an ATR-72.

    The flight was routing BFS-BHD-NCL.

I remember a local new report that following a reporter who booked BFS-BHD to see iif t would save time in getting to Belfast City Centre from the Antrim area during Rush Hour.

Flight only lasted a short time before it was axed.

    Richard

Flight was scheduled not for the route but because the BHD aircraft did Royal Mail runs at night out of BFS so was seen as a sensible to let pax have option. They did for a short time run some purely scheduled BFS-BHD-NCL during day also.

My exact thoughts. I wonder if there will ever be a successful service from dockside to dockside? Or are companies more interested in paring back costs over such a short sector?

I think this one comes down to the employees views more than employers if you take aside the £100 difference.

(bmi)8 flights a day-> flexible ticket -> can change for free and backup if flight missed
    (cityjet)3 flights a day -> little backup

(bmi) decent ff scheme in Star Alliance group
(cityjet) “fly blue” – only KLM, AF and partners

(bmi) large lounge with free food for Silver/Gold members at both ends
(cityjet) shared lounge at bhd and as far as i can tell on their site no LCY lounge or possibly shared lounge access

(bmi) extensive connection oppertunities at end destination
(cityjet) restricted connection oppertunities at end destination

People have already voted with their feet it would seem. Mind you ive not seen any NI advertising yet!

I heard that the first LCY-BHD only had two onboard, unconfirmed though.

Heard similar “rumors”. Dont think big threat to bmi as £100 more expensive than their business with less of a “product” in terms of ff scheme, lounges etc

Can also be quicker than the 1hr 30min flying time to fly into LHR and get Heathrow Express depending on time of day and traffic conditions.

And secondly, am I right in thinking that years ago there use to be an airline that offered a service between Gatwick and Heathrow for passengers with connecting flights? If so, what was it called and what aircraft did they use to operate as I can’t remember?

It was BCAL (credit to Agent K below). They used Sikorsky helicopters.
