RE: Dumb things you did as a kid.

Firstly, it must have been in summer 1997, I was with a friend down by a small stream. I was only 12 years old and I thought of myself as a rebel so we agreed that lighting small fires would be fun. Unfortunately, it had been a dry summer and so any plants surrounding the newspaper we lit started to burn too! Our reaction was to kick the burning paper into the river, not realising that as we done so, it caught loads of dried up plants on it’s way in and set them off too. A guy walking his dog gave us a telling off and the situation was soon under control.

Also, when we were moving house, we decided to hire a lorry ourself as we were only moving about 4 miles up the road, it seemed a far cheaper option. It was one of the lorries with a lift on the back and in order to activate the lift, you had to start the engine. I volunteered to get some empty boxes from the back of the lorry which required the key – I turn the key and the lorry just shot backwards into a concrete post holding a 6ft garden fence together. It smashed this to pieces and I went numb. What was left of the post was stopping the lorry from going back any further so I had to rush inside my house and break the news to my family. As my dad is in the army, it was an army house and is happened in a car park – we didn’t have drive ways or garages. The house which suffered was empty at the time and we were able to sort the fence out (a little) and continue moving house.

RE: What is your favourite ‘Holiday Airport’ ?

That was the flight from Cardiff and the night it crashed was wet and there were freak storms.

I flew Gatwick to Girona in June of 1999 on a Britannia 767-200 and it all seems a blur. I can’t remember anything about the flight or the aircraft, except that the flight time was a mere 75 minutes!

Montego Bay is a great airport and I was so unimpressed by the article by Airliner World. Some shots from inside the terminal would have been great as it really is a great airport with some great viewing facilties.

Just look at the shot below. What makes it hard to believe is that it was taken on Christmas Day… God it must be nice to have temperatures in the 30s all year round!

It’s taken from inside MyTravel Airways A330-200 G-MOJO at La Romana in the Dominican Republic. I’ve been on that aircraft and I’ve flown to that airport, but I haven’t been to that airport on that aircraft. 😉 Confused? I am!

I’m not sure if the airport is new, but the terminal is and things inside are extremely limited and basic. The check-in area is open air – by this, I mean there are no doors at all but it is under cover. After doing this, you pass through a security check and then enter the departure lounge/gates area which are all merged as one. When I was there, there was my Britannia 763 and an LTU aircraft and the inside of the airport was packed. Literally every seat in the departure lounge was taken with no more than about 650 people from the two flights!

Arrivals is also simple, just one big empty room where you queue to get your visas and then onto passport control, baggage claim, customs and exits – it really is a tiny airport.

Anyway, god knows why I started blabbing on about all this..!!

Can I just ask a question related to his? Does an airline have any say in the food they serve on flights or do they just accept whatever they are given?

Anyway, British Airways serve their All Day Deli range and it’s top notch, high quality food. 😛

I recently read about that crash you are talking about monster500. I’m reading a book at the moment called Black Box, it is a Channel 4 book and the ISBN in case anyone is interested is 0-7522-6145-2.

The aircraft would have lasted longer had they operated it on long haul, but apparently, they were using it for these sorts of flights – just 30 minutes on a 747 and so, the more takeoffs and landing slowly put pressure on a rivet in the tail of the plane. Boeing had only put one in, not the standard two, so one little piece of metal was holding two huge pieces of metal together – obviously, not something that anybody would have believed if they had known about it.

RE: Discovery Wings channel on TV

We’re subscribers to NTL and have a huge package with lots of great channels.

However, NTL recently told us that instead of paying £5 to watch one Premier League football match, we could pay just an extra £1 a month to watch as many games as we wanted to. We would also get a whole host of new stations including Discovery Wings for a quid a month.

It runs from 18:00hrs – 02:00hrs and often has some good stuff on it. It does repeat everything once though, so from 6pm til 10pm you can watch 4 hours of unseen stuff and then from 10pm til 2am you get the whole lot repeated, but it has something for everyone and Flightpath is particularly interesting.

I actually watched a documentary about Air Traffic Control a few weeks back and it was so good that I watched the repeat.

If you haven’t got it, I’d certainly recommend it.
