i dont mean to post negative things about the f35, i love the idea for it to replace the harrier as VTOL but did anyone see this article?

what do you think about it?

Google translations are awful & sometimes wrong (ie translate kms in miles), so it would be cool if you could post the original link too when you post french articles.

The pilot (Fred Boeckler) is a really nice person btw. Did you notice the grey colour of SPECTRA antennas caches (instead of the usual green)?

I like this idea, Die Roten Pfeile!

I know a retired Red that likes Alpha Jet btw, but they are getting venerable also!

May i suggest F-35? At least they would find a use!

More detailed here, the author was in contact with Thalès.

If today, the velocity of active antenna radar lets you toggle quickly between multiple operating modes, this PEA is to enable the radar to divide its branches, assigning different tasks to each of them. Part could scan the sky for hostile, while other modules would be used for SAR imagery, active interference, or the transmission of data.

WOW, a bit of over reaction here. First off, the IOC for the Marines mandates basic CAS capability. Second, last I heard when this issue came up there was talk of a podded ROVER solution for the F-35B. The open architecture for the F-35 software does not clear up the current backlog of software to be developed and fight tested. What was the last time a fighter entered service with full mission capability and software developed? ( Rafale-no, Typhoon-no and still no, F-22- no and still no, Gripen-no, and NG? we shall see, F-18E/F?- first versions were not really an advance over F-18C) There is warranted criticism of the F-35, and then there is unrealistic expectations that no western fighter program in recent memory has met. Let’s look at baseline before calling in the torchlit hanging mob.
Edit- Halloweene, how secure are the transmissions from the downlink video?

You are probably right. Too touchy. I don’t know how it will work on F-35, Tyhoon P1Eb has rover capability through sniper pod, it is embedded on Rafale. This is not really a criticism on F-35 plane, but about its management. I won’t go further on that topic, poor personal experience.
Rover is encrypted (poorly, but who really needs encrypted coms in those situations? We have seen up to 8 airplanes (including drones) over a single zone in A’stan. And the Jtac had to manage that under fire… In the end everything ended up well, but there was a near miss due to JTAC stress between a plane and a reaper, and one 250 Kgs bomb was released on wrong coordinates due to faulty heitgh coordinates.

Several reasons to want to avoid probs. If F-35 2B has rover capability through a pod, nice to me.

The only ones thinking that it is “mandatory” are the critics and not the the people actually using it, that’s why I say it’s a “perceived” failure.

Is every plane that delivers CAS today equipped with it? If not then your argument holds no water.

btw, ROVER is a video comms channel and would not only require new software but new hardware as well. The hardware flying with Block 2B arrived with Tech Refresh1 back in 2008 with Block 0.5 which means that the planning for which would have been years earlier.

Block3 will introduce TR2 which should allow for ROVER in Block4.

Can the Harrier? The F-35 can if it want’s to.

i think i answered to you in the above post. Btw i can give you a full dialog in which a US MArine dismissed a mirage 2000D in early years of Afgha war because the pod resolution wasn’t good enough…. Keep it or throw it, your choice.

Look, i was FAC (which is roughly the NATO equivalent of JTAC) and i get simply crazy when i see this capability lacking on Marines IOC. IT would be so simple to implement!!!
LEt me explain (forgive my poor english) ATM, FAC/JTAC give a 9 line to pilot. This order is SENSED to avoid any friendly collateral damage. All in all, FAC is resposible for the result of the bombing.
Some years ago, a marvelous tool called downlink video (rover is a brand) appeared. What is its use? When you are boot on grounds you see the world in 2D. Pilots see it from above 3D.
Let’s say “Carla 1 this is Morgan. We’re stuck 500 m north of a coumpound in valley heading SW/NW from Kapisa Valley at coordinates XXXXXXX. Copy?
Morgan this is Carla copy. What is your situation?
Carla we are under fire from this coupound, house with blue roof. One casualty, need evac, wait for 9 line.
Morgan copy can you confirm XXXXX coordinates?
Carla yes confirm. Hurry, house with blue roof!
Morgan copy, but 5 houses have blue roofs!

Of course that is an oversimplified examle which has nothing to do with anyone concerned. (specially about random nicknames)

Oh btw. French planes implemeted an uplink ideo also 😉

The same way they have been doing CAS for DECADES before ROVER.

They will use a combination of laser designators, GPS, map coordinates, EOTS, EODAS, and the all-mighty Mk1 Eyeball to pick out the targets.

Don’t teach me how to make CAS please, i learnt how to do it in early 1992… And kept up to date till 05/22/2014…No downwards video link is a HUGE step back. And in contradiction with many Roe’s in asymetric conflicts. Not to talk about implementing an upwards video link only very few countries have (which is the aim of FMV btw.)

No pun intended, genuine question : how do Marine Corps expect F-35 IOC performing CAS without ROVER? Afaik FMV isn’t standardized yet.

Considering that Dassault was involved in Gripen FCS fix and that they collaborated on nEUROn, i doubt they don’t speak to each other.

Err no, not exactly. Rafale cnshoot six AASM on six different targets simultaneously (or so)… Dunno if it can do it on moving targets, but i think at least partially yes. Of course they are based far away and arent very numerous. Some Typhoons also gained that capability recently (at least in theory as planes are used for tests) with P1EA upgrade afaik.

30% multiplier for external fuel tank afaik (might be wrong, but i dont think so)
