Different roles warrant different requirements. It is not only LMA and the JSF program, but DOD that believes that manuverability is secondary to Stealth, Affordability, and Sensor reach and fusion when it comes to a Multi role fighter. They did not wish for TVC and also framed modest requirements. With the ATF they were required to come up with the most letal A2A fighter in the world , with the JSF the requirements are totally different.
Affordability is the key word there :p
Maybe one should add reliability (no bashing in this very sentence, hard start, w’ll see how it comes later)
okay, concerns phase 2 evaluation made in 2009…
But you are missing a point, if you look carefully at the bar. The comparison was done with Lot 4 (F3-04T) Rafale and P1E updated Typhoon…. Which will be obsolete when first Gripen NG will be delivered.:diablo:
But thx for the info.
… and that the final numbers were weighted by a credibility factor that was defined in 2008. ๐
i knew that but never saw the source, i am genuinely interested in.
.. related to the systems fitted as Rii claimed before. ๐
Btw, time to remind that swiss eval (second stage) didnt concern present capabilities of planes, but the ones projected in 2015…
4.5 gen.
Lower RCS than the Typhoon, Rafale, F-16 and F/A-18 according to Canadian evaluations.
No.
Do you have source about the canadian evaluations please? i wouldnt be so surprised due to its smaller size, but i’m very interested in the evals you quote.
Yes, F-15E or Rafale would fit the bill,
but the plan used to be to sell those F-18E back to USN once F-35 came.
I now think the F-18 is permanent.
F-18 is also cheaper to operate than F-15, which make a difference
Thanks for sensible answers in an otherwise “hot” topic;)
/troll mode on
They are training in ground to air missile shots
/troll mode off
i’m just wondering, considering the huge size of Australia (and furthermore Canada), why stick to F18? Its range isnt that long. (F15, Rafale, Typhoon with CFT etc. got longer rangeno?)
Why bring in Rafale and Typhoon? Want another flame debate?

Libya, France, airbases and Mirage fighter jets (30 credits)
Posted on: Wed, Feb 27, 2013
The Libyan Defence Ministry is said to have received a French proposal described as โencouragingโ for it to go ahead with its contacts with France to buy Mirage fighter jets. The following 404-word report sheds light on the subject and tells what about the French proposal and tells what about the contacts between Libya and France on a deal for the Mirage and on which type.
It is becomming a recurrent rumour… Maybe something serious behind the scene?
“The Pentagon program chief for the F-35 warplane slammed its commercial partners Lockheed Martin and Pratt & Whitney on Wednesday, accusing them of trying to “squeeze every nickel” out of the U.S. government and failing to see the long-term benefits of the project.
U.S. Lieutenant-General Christopher Bogdan made the comments during a visit to Australia, where he has sought to convince lawmakers and generals to stick to a plan to buy 100 of the jets, an exercise complicated by the second grounding of the plane this year and looming U.S. defence cuts.”
His comments about LM and P&W may not be the best argument to persuade Australia to stick to its commitment to F-35 but they are refreshingly candid.
Ouch ๐ฎ
Its all a bunch of excuses.
Take a look at this forum itself & say Scorpion82’s posts on Eurofighter. They are better than 90% of the EF reportage out there. And this is a so called “amateur” as versus a professional defense journalist. If he had that routine access & did it full time, his quality of work would dwarf all the lengthy articles in the expensive trade mags.
The amount of information here:http://rafale.freeforums.org/
Is far in excess of what appears in most of the world’s media, bar the rare article which is well sourced & sufficiently detailed.
At the end of the day, its all about sincerity.
There are far too many “professional journalists” who are going around posturing as experts in a field they don’t either care about, or just treat as yet another job
I both know Tmor and Scorpion, and regularly talk with them (via forum) ๐
And i know they are very reliable and knowledgable sources (in fact i very recently asked Scorpion where to find a comprehensive summary of Eurofighter evolutions). Aswell as some others. But what Merurius pointed is that journalist cannot be as specialized as they are… And i intended to quote myself as an amateur…
If you like as uch as i do Tmor site, you may also find those two sites interesting : http://rafalefan.e-monsite.com/blog/7/

Have a nice day!
Of course critcs are easy. “Art is dufficult, critcs is easy”. But doese it in anyway exonerate responsability to written words?
I am in no way trying to point at anyone/any profession. But what you are saying is that either journalists are not numerous enough, either not competent (due to lack of specialization?) enough.
In the end, who are we (amateurs) meant to trust?
I see one missing (not only nationalistic feeling) : ASTER and folloing your point, THADD had a 100% hit percentage after first attempts…
