My notes say it was WD413 / G-BFIR on 27.8.78 when the u/c collapsed following a brake systems failure. Rebuilt at Castle Donington. Flying again by 8.80. Now G-VROE with Air Atlantique
Thanks Mark – the Spitfire shot gives me a good view of the ground falling away. I am pretty sure of the location now. Cheers
I know Kenley well and often take a walk around the perimeter. Was the dump at the NE end of the field ? The location is not clear but I assume it was away from the main base.
I think it was “Ace Eli and Rodger of the Skies” (1973). Cliff Robertson was in it. I have not seen it and I do not believe it is available on video / DVD
My apologies for my error. G-INFO does quote the c/n as 109-27154. I need a new pair of specs I think.
N9191 became G-ALND on 12.4.49. It crashed at Panshanger on 8.3.81 seriously injuring the pilot. It was for restoration with Arrow Air Services but has not flown since. It was registered with the current owner in Abergevenny on 1.2.90 and was reported on rebuild in 1996. Hope this is of some help.
Both the Phelps and the Cheesman books are for sale on Abebooks.co.uk. Worth a look.
An earlier incident to G-BINH – Spun off the top of a roll whilst doing low level aerobatics at Swanton Morley on 10.4.81. The aircraft was badly damaged in the subsequent crash and the two persons on board suffered major injuries. Evidently rebuilt and flying by 1984.
G-BINH c/n 17371 ex VT-DOW, HU-488. Lost power on take-off at Shipdham on 19-6-84. Struck wire fence and overturned, damaging the wings. Rebuild planned at that time. Was owned by Arrow Air Services Ltd.
I see 2 copies on Abebooks for £28 each and one on Amazon for £50. They are overpriced to my mind. I will keep on looking for you.
Anson 1 G-AMDA now at Duxford ?
The photo of the damaged Yak-3 shows D-FLAK as recently shown in the May 2005 Pilot.
LA-5A Major
My notes say that Luton LA-5A Major G-AYVN (PFA 1204) was first flown at Staverton on 24.7.73. It sadly crashed near Barton on 31.5.81 with two fatalities. Witnesses reported that the engine was misfiring ( Continental C90) and that the wings appeared to fall off.
It is great to see posts on these type of aircraft – they also are part of the rich tapestry of historic aviation. More please.
The MS.230 used in the Blue Max was indeed EI-ARG (1049) flown by Derek Piggott I believe. Ex F-BGMR. It became G-BJCL with Stephen Grey on 22.7.81 and was exported to Kermit Weeks as N230MS after work by PPS in 10.87. Cancelled on 27.1.88. I believe it was damaged in Hurricane Andrew on 24.8.92. It was powered by a 250hp Salmson 9ab
I was just about to make a similar response. My paperback copy is complete I misunderstood the original post. I think there were photos in the hardback version which I have not seen. Anybody with scans of those ? Thanks
