You indians should cancel the pakfa and get some f35s, they have much , much lower RCS….

    ….:D:D:D

They probably need something that travels faster than a piper cub and can carry more than 4 missiles. 😀

    Key notes…

*Initially both the RuAF (almost all are single-seat with some twin-seat as trainer) and IAF (50 single-seat followed by 200 twin-seat) will buy 250 ac each. With options to buy more.
*HAL and UAC will be equal partners in a joint venture company, much like the Brahmos JV, that will develop and manufacture the FGFA.
*Overall development cost is $ 8 to 10 billion
*Each ac will cost around $ 86 to 100 million
    *RCS ~0.5 m2
*A key strength of the FGFA would be multi-sensor data fusion

India, Russia close to PACT on next generation fighter
Ajai Shukla / New Delhi January 05, 2010, 0:38 IST

    http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/india-russia-close-to-pactnext-generation-fighter/381718/

Late last year, a defence ministry delegation to Sukhoi’s flagship aircraft facility in Siberia became the first Indians to set eyes upon the next-generation fighter that is slated to form the backbone of the future Indian Air Force (IAF). In that first meeting, carefully choreographed by Sukhoi, the new fighter, standing on the tarmac waved a welcome to the Indians, moving all its control fins simultaneously. The effect, recounts one member of that delegation, was electric. The senior IAF officer there walked silently up to the aircraft and touched it almost incredulously. 😀

    RCS ~0.5m^2? That doesn’t sound right…

FTC-2000 makes no sense as its not even being considered by the PLAAF. Indonesia will become the launch customer if true. It is more logical for them to consider the FC-1 or L-15 if they had to go the Chinese route. For logistics sake, they should just consider one type all together rather than two.

I had never even heard of the FTC-2000 before. I looked it up and it seems to be a trainer(/light fighter?) with a T/W>1.3 and a max speed of M=2.0. It looks like a beautiful aircraft too.

    Typhoon Over Spain

by Ian Harding, Chris Lofting, and Keith Chilton

    1. Before the end of 2009, Spanish AF has acquired 26 EF-2000s in total (19 Tranche I and 7 Tranche II).

    2. The experience of Spanish AF’s pilot for the flight performance of EF-2000:

“A fighter that is born for flying supersonically ~ even at the height of 10,000ft (3,048 m), flying Typhoon at speeds below Mach 0.9 is not good for the aircraft.”

“The supersonical tendency of Typhoon causes problem sometimes to slow it down, especially during the flight of high AoA. There is no idle speed.”

“Typhoon performs just as well configured with extra wing and centreline fuel tanks plus weapons. The only noticeable difference is the extra 10 kts required for rotation.”

    3. During a recent international exercise, two Spanish Typhoons had engaged eight F-15s in one stimulated A2A mission, and the two Typhoon scored hits of seven Eagles finally.

Were the Typhoons lost as well or did the last Eagle bug out? My guess is the latter, but it would be nice to know for sure.

According to some sources, they are claimed to be from KNAAPO, …
    it is similar to F-22″
“but it is squashed, like a frog”
    “it has more streamlined shapes”.

Seems to fit the few presumably official RCS, and badge images as well as Paralay’s and PM’s images.

Ah, finnaly friday, thank god! Working week is through!

    Here’s my personal favourite
    http://www.pdtent.com/images/ESB.gif

Still nothing about this exercise in the international press? Only the French briefing so far?

I’m taking this too far I know. I highly recommend:

We don’t know ROE’s. We don’t know what the aircraft were flying with. We don’t know what sensors were degraded or operating in a lower mode (French military is very picky about Spectra operation in foreign territory, and presumably the same goes for other operators of the Typhoon). A HUD kill shot is always fun to crow about and rub in your opponents faces, but how much more are they beyond that?

Just to take out what’s relevant regarding that topic. Interestingly we haven’t heared anything from the french site regarding this encounter. Appears to be not relevant for some people.;)

Well this was quite a while ago.

From which source and who’s French?

You’re talking about pilots learning their aircrafts still, remember?

The kill was probably scored but if the F-22 scored only once it says a lot about the Rafales and their pilots…

Oh yes we will, they start talking now and it is not going to please a lot of people. 😎

I was referring to this article:
    http://www.flugrevue.de/de/business-aviation/fluggeraet-hersteller/eurofighter-signature-for-tranche-3-gets-urgent.4750.htm

Anyways, the Rafale is an excellent aircraft, and I’m sure the pilots are top-notch as well.

I’m a bit surprised that the Rafale defeated the Typhoon so many times. I’ve heard previous exercises were significantly more humbling for the French. Needless to say, I’m still a fan of both the Rafale and Typhoon, and IMHO the Rafale is the best looking aircraft out there (if looks count for anything), and its EW suite is pretty insane if the rumors are true.

What I’m more interested in is how did the Rafale perform against America’s finest? 😀 The article implies that the Rafale only lost once out of a number of engagements, but does not definitively say that it won either (actually, to be perfectly correct, it only says that the Rafale was only in the Raptor’s sights, not that a kill was scored).

Will we ever know? Probably not- these things are pretty hush-hush. I don’t think the US likes losing, and it would be incredibly bad form anyway to go about crowing about simulated kills against your allies.

How do you figure? It’s top speed is >M2.4. Aside from a Mig-31, what other fighter is going to go faster than an F-22, especially carrying weapons?

    A Mig-25? 😀

No the ‘definition’ has not changed. They (USAF/DOD/LM) have used slightly differnt wordings throughout the years but the core ‘definition’ of >Mach 1.5 without the use of afterburners has remained the same.

NASA defines supercruise as being able to attain a speed of Mach 1.0 or greater at 95% of dry thrust. That seems to make far more sense than LM’s definition. In addition 95% of the time when anyone refers to supercruise, they simply mean supersonic with dry thrust. That is the commonly accepted definition.

You may very well be correct that the F-35 can supercruise (in the commonly accepted sense of the word). I heard it did in tests already actually. I don’t think it reaches the same speed as the raptor or typhoon, but perhaps that is why LM does not state that it supercruises- it doesn’t meet their odd, contrived definition, number 1, and number 2 if they did admit it, then they would also have to admit that their competitors also can do this (and faster too mind you).

Some people on this forum don’t realize that radar is an E-M wave which can be reflected, absorbed, scattered, diffracted, destructively interfered, transmitted (in different directions) and even actively cancelled. Super computers are needed to optimize these oten conflicting effects to minimise RCS. Shaping for stealth is rather simplisic and ineffective.

Actually, I think we all know this… The bottom line is that is significantly easier to do shaping (i.e. computer optimized prediction and optimization of RCS) than active cancellation.

What you’ve posted is completely whack, as the drag formula you’ve used pertains mainly to subsonic aircraft. You need to calculate wave drag. Plus, you need installed thrust figures at altitude, which you aren’t likely to find. I’m still laughing at the Su-27 supercruise speed you came up with, as it just isn’t going to happen.

Nice try, but there aren’t any “simple” formula’s to calculate this performance data. The only way you could take an accurate guess would be to have access to actual supercruise performance data for many existing aircraft to extrapolate for another. However, most air forces and aircraft manufacturers aren’t going to give that data up. 😉

Lol, I’m aware that it is whack. All I was looking for was a rough estimate, and I hoped that I could get away with using a subsonic calculation, as long as I ensured that I corrected my constant values. As for needing installed thrust values at altitude- yeah, I figured that as well, but the sea level calculations seem pretty close to reality. Also, I figured that the ratios for dry thrust against wet thrust wouldn’t vary as much as the thrust values themselves, but this is just conjecture.

Wait until Carlo Kopp sees my Su-27 supercruise speed- he’ll fly into a panic.

I guess wave drag will have to be calculated numerically. But I’m not gonna go out of my way to do that…
