Ps. Makes you think that actually a very good investment would be for Hendon to build a very convincing replica spitfire but with an extremely tough replica interior that could withstand punishment. It would never be empty?

Or a replica Beverley along the same lines 🙂

I once paid a £5 donation to sit in the cockpit of a well-known Spitfire replica at Duxford.

    Why? Why not?

The donation went to the museum, and the chap in charge let me close the door, slide the canopy forward, and pretend I was hunting Buchons in 1968 for as long as I wanted. So I did.

You can be any kind of enthusiast you like. Just don’t rain on someone else’s parade because you don’t approve.

I don’t ‘not approve’ . If someone wants to dress up and sit in it and machine gun noises I don’t care. Although I think pretending to shoot stuff is an odd way to spend ones time. Like people who dress up as soldiers – why?

Perhaps I’ve not made my meaning clear. xf940 said the museum at Hendon didn’t cater for enthusiasts because his friend got in trouble got crossing off the walkways and because the jp was protected. Well, it’s a museum. If the jp wasn’t getting protected then people would complain equally. Likewise how difficult is it just to walk on the obvious route. If you have a need to touch and look inside put in a research request. The jp with just a fake stick and Perspex cover is only intended for kids.

Xf940, for clarification it was that element I was questioning but admittedly in a rushed way. Nothing wrong if somebody wants to play pilot or fly a real aircraft. Free country and it takes all sort.

I do disagree that a sit in exhibit has to be the full thing. I sat in the jp at Hendon as a kid and I wasn’t fussed about the non authentic elements. It is still better than a sim.

Daz – is my memory failing me or arnt you building a replica spitfire? Apologies if I have the wrong person. If so, soon you can relive 68 over and over.

    Cheers

Why does an enthusiast need to play pilot anyway. A true enthusiast surely could just look like everyone else. Those who love art don’t need to finger the oil paintings they look at etc. A good eye for getting kids excited though

I’m not suggesting we do anything, they deserve a voice (etc etc…). However, I prefer not to be reminded of their existence!

    Nice…

Stupid people have always existed. It is unfortunate that the Internet now makes it apparent that you and I share oxygen with them.

What would you do with them meddle? All these ‘stupid’ people I mean. It’s all context isn’t it. Do you think others haven’t overheard a conversation you’ve had and thought ‘what an idiot!’. Of course. We are all stupid in our own little ways. Maybe a bit more tolerance would go a long way.

Were they the most interesting sent in? Competent but not very creative.

Whoa! Why do illegal immigrants and terrorists get mentioned in the same breath. Why would we need a Churchill figure to ‘deal’ with poor blighters desperate to find somewhere for their families to live.

Read a bit more about Churchill. He is not all great.

Also the situation of WW2 would not arise in the same way as it did. Mass conscription/volunteering is very unlikely don’t you think.

Ps do you have a source for a terrorist successfully claiming compensation for being put in confinement or is it hearsay?

The only thing that really matters is that there is a family really hurting today. A sad event.

As for the youth of today, Jack ,compared to then I have no doubt that layabouts and gangs were just as common in the thirties and earlier.

Thank goodness for sanity in a response. Jack.. Do you think a few drunken people dropping cans is exclusive to today’s youth. You do realise that not everyone in 1940 acted like Richard Todd in the Dambusters and that in 1940 there were still louts, drunks, rapists and murderers.

And as for that king and country nonsense. We are lucky we’ve got over that nationalistic tripe. It was that kind of attitude that led Britain to thinking it could impose it’s will on the world even when not wanted. Yes – pride and patriotism can do good but also a lot of harm. It’s not black and white all the time!

It’s so easy to come out with lazy cliches. Saves coming up with new ideas and more open attitudes.

Nice one Jayslater, it’s good to see the Russian front getting such comprehensive coverage and recognition in the UK and beyond. Personally I was very disappointed that there were no UK government representatives at the recent Moscow parade. Although I understand that politics was the reason, present events should not get in the way of remembering the heroism and joint effort on all sides to defeat Nazism.

What? So the UK should remember the efforts of the allies in defeating fascism by sending representatives to a parade in a country whose respects for freedoms and international law is minimal, whose current exploits in Ukraine are a travesty and whose parade is half memorial half propaganda. What excellent logic.

So here’s the question : would we rather the only surviving Beverley was at Fort Paul, or with Kermit’s collection?

    Moggy

    Option C?

Wings43, you missed my point. I’m not having a go at Kermit at all. But it doesn’t matter how many millions you have, you can only do so many projects at once. A simple case of too many to do. The Lancaster is a huge project.

I’ve got hundreds of DVDs and I can’t watch them all at once. But I like owning them. Kermit obviously enjoys collecting and why not? I don’t think he has a problem. I think some enthusiasts have the problem.
