It stood a long time outside at Bruntingthorpe .
It did and is in tip top condition because it was cared for well but long long term where should it be? In or out. There might not be the volunteers, interest, finance to keep it as a ground runner for ever and then comes the point where it needs to be inside.
Elvington keeps getting mentioned and actually David I do agree with you but unless Elvington campaign for it and offer a home for it then nothing will change. People from YAM read this forum. I wonder what they think.
If it returned to Bruntingthorpe it would be the strange situation where David Walton bought her from the RAF -sold her to VTTS and was given it back for free!
Elvington is by far the best choice for her !
But it wouldn’t be undercover at Elvington David and cover for these large machines is vital for their long term preservation.
Not bored by any chance?
Me?
Where will the aircraft be based on completion?
For me it is a flight. It took off and landed albeit having not gone too far and accidentally. However it was controlled even if accidental. The wright brothers made a flight, not a hop and the victor went as far as that surely?
Great stuff. Thank you for posting
But Xh558 isn’t just any other Vulcan. She has created more interest for our aviation hobby than any other individual aircraft of any type that I can think of. People who otherwise have no interest in aviation have come out in their droves to watch XH558s appearances.
Yes because it flies. It’s not realistic to expect huge numbers to turn up to see it at an airport in static or even ground running condition.
What ever you do don’t mention the ……………
But you have haven’t you.
But Mike, proportion is an individual thing. If your life obsession is Vulcans then it might be tragic to that person.
Good luck with the project
Any mention from the xh558 team about the future home of the aircraft. I know they said Doncaster but is it all confirmed?
In period? Yes and no. If you watch enough black and white war films then it begins to seem as if wartime was like that but it’s only a very narrow idea of what I would imagine (and I stress imagine ) life was like. The film has very little reference to anything beyond the stiff upper lip version of aircrew we are used to. A real honest portrayal that is truly ‘period’ would have crews wetting the back wheel, representations of other classes and a bit more realism and grit to it. It’s a stylised version of 1943.
Is this aircraft a regular on the airshow circuit in mainland Europe?
I suppose there is always a possibility but the chance of a Russian speaking Stirling Enthusiast with access to any possible archives over there is id imagine a bit slim!
Did they serve with any other obscure air forces.
Great set of pics in particular the legendary actors Richard Todd and Michael Redgrave. Just Brilliant. Really made the Dambusters an epic movie I still watch it regularly. I would think it would be hard to replace these two in a remake these days.
You wouldn’t be replacing them. Richard Todd once played Robin Hood. He wasn’t replacing Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner wasn’t replacing Richard Todd. It’s just a different interpretation.
If the filmmakers themselves used the term remake Id be surprised. If they have it just opens endless questions. Really it is just another interpretation. Bond is played by lots of actors. So us Jesus and Robin Hood. It’s not inconceivable that someone could better Redgrave and Todd. Great performances but there are good actors who are there equals today.
