I would hazard a guess that the most accessible sites have been ‘done’, although to what degree of profficiency the early digs were undertaken to will never be known, unless the sites were re-excavated. I remember the JU88 crash site in Epping forest that was ‘dug’ in the late 1960’s by one group , it was not until 1982 that the site was redug by yet another group with quite a lot emerging from the hole along with a pair of bombs!.
I now concentrate on old airfields, quite a few smaller items can be gleaned from behind the site of dispersals etc.
I was talking not so long ago with one of the chaps from the group at East Kirkby, I got the impression that there were a few digs lined up in the Lincolnshire area.

Goxhill in North East Lincolnshire, built in 1941 and used by No1 Group Towed Target Flight for Bomber Command, ended up being used as a training base for the USAAF.
It probably remained as the most complete example of a wartime bomber field until the late eighties due to it’s remoteness, alas the bulldozers started their work and the airfield has slowly succumbed with the flying control tower and fire tender shed demolished last year.

    Short answer version!.

The airfield was supposed to represent Bassingbourne, wartime home of the 91st BG(H), the belle was the first crew to reach 25 missions, at the time that was the standard tour of duty for USAAF aircrew., the film was actually shot at Binbrook Lincs.
The aircraft ‘doubled up’ with different codes on each side, cant recall how many individual airworthy B-17’s were used, but try the search facility on this forum and the answers will be there 🙂
The original belle carried for it’s 25th mission a camera crew to record the event, I have a copy of the original film, If I remember rightly some footage from that was used in the making of the modern film, albeit with artistic license regarding the actual mission destination etc.
    Dogs name eludes me!
    Probably Heinz soup 😉
    Hope this helps.

The opening sequence of this film was, and is still is, a brilliant piece of work.
I first watched this film in 1966 as a 12 year old schoolboy. living near an old wartime airfield as I did, I began to see our one in a different light.
I always thought that scene, where Dean Jagger rode to his old base, and stood on one of the old dispersals was filmed here in the UK, you live and learn eh? 🙂

    Leornato,
There will be local protests over this plan believe me!.
Yes, there is a need for housing but the EERA and John Prescott really do need to think again about the alternatives without loss to green belt land.
I think there is a directive in force that limits new homes beneath existing flightpaths, The EERA dont seem to have taken North Weald or the old airfield at Hunsdon into consideration about this, especially Hunsdon , this is the proposed site for 25,000 new homes . Hunsdon lies directly under the flight path into Stansted.
Add to this a poor infrastructure regarding roads, IE: the one and only M11 junction at Harlow and the A414, ask anyone who tries to leave or enter Harlow during the ever extending peak times, let alone vehicles from the many thousands of new homes planned for this area, and they will be exiting Harlow for work because the industry to support the development is simply non existant in the area.

Just how significant or useful is North Weald?

It is home to the North Weald Museum, provides a working base for quite a few Aviation related company’s, provides a home for a very large weekend market, operating base for a large Import / Export commercial company, Driver training, Storage and distribution, Local Model flying club and I dare say quite a bit more.
Without me sounding offhand, you seem to have a bit of a problem with the “wealthy individuals” who are lucky to fly from an historic airfield like North Weald,
So the gist of what you are saying is that you dont mind seeing houses on the airfield or anywhere else that has a history surrounding it but we people who live near the area cant have a say?.
    enlighten me please

on November the 14th I posted under the “West Malling has gone!” thread about housing plans for both North Weald and Hunsdon airfields .

North Weald has not escaped either, I read of plans for 6,000 houses to be built there as well.

North Weald has suffered threats of Development for quite some time, the first plans to emerge was for gravel extraction and the building of a huge waste incinerator. Luckily these got squashed , but everyone near here will suffer from the unelected East Of England Regional Authourity. this is no more than a puppet of John Prescotts office and will stop at nothing to see Harlow expanded across the M11 into North Weald and Northwards into neighbouring Hertfordshire obliterating the nearby villages of Gilston, Hunsdon (including the former airfield) and Eastwick.

Must be time for a movie about the Amiens raid, surely!

Hmmm!, my thoughts on this is that it wouldnt be ‘sexy’ enough for the public to watch it.
Now a film chronicle about both Pickard and Broadley would fire up interest with most of the members of this forum, both had distiguished career records in service with the RAF in 161 squadron and 140 wing (21,464 and 487 squadrons) however, how could you make a cinematic plot around one, out of many, similar raids in WW2 that would capture the imagination of the public.
Where would the love interest be?, surely Ms Yorke is getting on a bit now

How long was it up for Daz?.
Some of these free website builders have time limits or if the site is not updated on a regular basis the domain is re-allocated. I was not aware that freeservers operated like this though. Interested to see the reply you get.
If you have saved your material, then build another website. Tripod is not a bad deal for a cheap website, you can get quite a good looking effect for about £4.80 a month with NO adverts, easy to build and maintain as well.
The link in my signature is to my site built on Tripod Lycos . if you get no joy from freeservers, grab your domain on tripod!. the photos are hosted on photobucket.com and save on loading times. 😉
