MDA To Pick Industry Teams For Laser UAV Demo This Fall

Is there a roadmap on exactly how they are going to power a 100+ kW laser in a UAV? This would have to be a relatively large UAV with excess power, Global hawk sized.

It’s a myth that Rust wasn’t detected by Soviet AD.

Actually that was never the myth, the point was that cessna was flying slow and radar coverage was intermittent. The reason it was not deemed a threat or targeted was for the point I was making: First, the Cessna was moving too slow to be a military target, it was ignored by some Radar and even when detected was written off by the radar operators. Even when manned interceptors were sent, positive ID was not made. He flew through several AD sectors with intermittent contact, tracking lost him several times before he reached Moscow. This was in the most heavily defended airspace in the world……. No system is perfect.

There were several claimed (but unconfirmed) Georgian UAV shoot downs by an L-39 and a Buk. Previously, Israel has downed two UAV with Patriot missiles, one in similar location to the recent incident.

Whatever the reason for the recent failure, I disagree with the OP that this incident reflects overall performance of either SAM or AAM missiles. The reports are still vague as to what type of UAV it was, what it was doing, engagement parameters. And contrary to some people’s apparent beliefs; tactical recon UAV are not easy to track, target, and hit.

In certain respects, the interception of unmanned aerial vehicles is viewed as more challenging than bringing down fighter planes. The reason: These aircraft are smaller than fighter planes, sometimes considerably so. Their slowness makes them a difficult target for fighter plane missiles and also interception missiles that are designed to lock onto much larger and faster bodies. These qualities (or ostensible weaknesses) give UAVs certain advantages

Add this to the comments from Tal Inbar in post #7, and the point is clear.

I think you are jumping to conclusions; it could have been an accidental incursion (2.5 miles into Israeli airspace. Also, depending on the type, they operate at different altitudes. The searcher 2, and Hermes have a ceiling of 20,000ft. Those smaller battlefield recon UAV typically operate below 2,000 meters.

    thx, found it:

Any particular reason why you would have your UAV fly over treetop altitude..?

Trying to avoid having it shot down I suppose. No confirmation of altitude it was at though. Some additional info: was over Golan, there are pictures of the failed patriot launch (apparently missile exploded, no information if proximity fuse or premature). Patriots have downed drones over Israel in the past. There is no confirmation that it was a searcher 2, or Russian.

    Fair enough.

I think there was some simple explenation back then why the mig managed to shoot down the UAV.. have to find it 🙂
But it went like; shooting down UAV is easy.. anyone can do it.

Yup and Israel has shot down UAV’s before, not this time though.

Mig-29 downed a Hermes 450. Similar size to one above, longer wingspan.
Video is on YouTube. Looks like it took place at relatively high altitude.

Amega, your aware of how radar works. A UAV most likely not only has a small RCS, flies low, and usually at speeds well below 160 km/h. That makes them not only difficult to track but likely to be filtered out. Or do you think that most air search radars are plotting every duck and buzzard in the vicinity?

Add to that the limitations of the seeker head to lock on to that target where relative ground speed is low with all the movement around it.

Or don’t take my word for it and read the quote I posted from the UAV expert. In other words, the failure to intercept is concerning but not particularly surprising. Trying to apply this to the success rate of SAM or AAM as a whole is the very definition of apples and oranges.

“Hermetic defense does not exist, and various devices could very well penetrate [Israeli airspace],” said Tal Inbar, head of the Space and UAV Research Center at the Fisher Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies. “It is not easy to shoot down drones because of their size, speed and the materials they are made from, which make detection difficult,” he added.

Convert all old cessnas to cruise missiles, they may take like a day to get to their targets but they will… all get there !

    Worked for Mathias Rust.

    hahahahahahaha

    pathetic.

So you mean the missiles are of **** all use in intercepting cruise missiles then?

    Good to know.

I would think a cruise missile would be easier to track and target, by and large. A little UAV moving at 60 km/h would be filtered out. Not to mention issues of CW Seeker distigushing the slow UAV. Hitting a cruise missile? Probably quite difficult over land.

BTW, why the discourteous, rude response?

As expected, nothing like what missile manufacturers would have you believe.

Do you know what a Searcher 2 UAV is? The missile is larger than the UAV! Most likely the UAV is too small, too slow, too low. Probably very hard to maintain a lock, discern target from ground clutter.

It just say maintainance was not performed for the aircraft that was built in Soviet times. It has nothing to do with OEM parts or support.

Canda makes another payment to remain a partner in the F-35:
    http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/canadian-politics/liberals-pay-33-million-to-stay-in-f-35-program-despite-promise-not-to-buy-it

This is in spite of L-M saying that simply remaining in the program but not ordering jets will not guarantee future contracts. Canadian companies have been awarded over 800 million in contracts since joining.

Romania has not operated their MiG-29s for decades. They have been phased out due to high operating cost in favor of the MiG-21 LanceR..
Poland do not have an official maintenance contract signed with MAPO. They have overhauled their birds locally at WZL with some help from Ukraine and EADS.
Russian MiG-29s have no reported serviceability issues, their numbers have been scaled down according to requirements of the VKS.

Really? I think the VVS (VKS now) would disagree:

    http://mobile.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE5152J020090206

There is a reason that Mig-29 numbers were cut.
