Kev, TV and radio is controlled and monitored by external bodies, the press wasn’t as it kept crying ‘freedom of the press’, while inviting primeministers and MPs to slap up meals etc.
In theory this is why the broadcast media dosen’t reach the levels of gossip and depravity of the printed media – however nothing seems certain anymore!

As Newscorp already has a 39.1% controlling interest in BSkyB and BSkyB bought an 18% stake in ITV, isn’t it inevitable that there would be a ‘pooling’ of information between all media interests falling under the influence of Newscorp?

I was referring to the Mail on Sunday simply in terms of its weight! I used to pack the damn things in another life and anecdotal evidence from newsagents (200 on my patch) indicated that the sheer weight of the thing caused a lot of paper kids to give up their rounds.

Now being reported on Five Live that the offices of the Daily Star have or are in the process of being raided by the Police.

If all this turns out to be endemic in the print media, I wonder whether or not it be finally found out to encompass television and radio as well? At the moment, it’s looking like rather than being a can of worms it will in fact be a bottomless pit!

It seems to have come as a great surprise to some that we cannot trust politicians, the police or journalists.

I think most of us already knew that and we have had confirmation of that a-plenty over the last couple of years.

As to Rebekah Woods – surely if she has bleated (sorry, pleaded) that she shouldn’t have to resign because she didn’t know it was going on….well…I’m sorry, but that is surely good enough reason to sack her! It is as breathless a piece of arrogance as the statement made by Glen Mulclaire, without any hint of irony, that his family should be left in peace.

Linc – to be fair there is a great deal of good health info in most of the “proper” papers. But the Mail is treated as a “joke” because of its generally right-wing, traditionalist views. I tend to get my news from a variety of sources since it is almost always “coloured” depending on its source, and I include the BBC in that. It is astonishing how varied the slants are.

One of the BBC’s more irritating traits is the self-satisfaction when using the phrase ” the BBC has learnt” or “BBC sources have been told that” when you will probably have read it on Sky, Reuters, CNN or anywhere else, first.

I do not read any news paper, I get all I want to know from the T.V. News, Having said that however, my wife buys the Tuesdays issue of the Daily Mail, for one reason only, it has several pages donated to health issues, signs to look for concerning certain health issues.

One I saw, was about Prostate Cancer, which, for a fact, several members I know, for a fact, have had tests to get themselves checked out, and found out that they have enlarged Prostrates, myself included.
I am still undergoing tests, and my Consultant stated, any man over 60, should get to their Drs and ask for a C.T. scan. I passed this on to one member, no names, no pack drill, and he had a check up, and was found to be O.K. So although I notice that a lot of forumites deride the Daily Mail, they do speak words of wisdom, perhaps not all the time, but being a none reader, I cannot comment.
Perhaps those that are against the paper, can tell me why, just as a matter of interest.
And you fellas over 60, get yourselves checked out, it’s painless.;)

They’d have been happier still id it had been the Mail On Sunday.

Paper boys of the country are happy.

Whilst this is no defence of them, not all journalists at the NotW were corrupt and things may have changed there so closing down and rebranding a paper is not the solution, those responsible, encouraged or turned a blind eye to practices are the ones who should be brought to justice.

However how many enquiries really do result in more than a slap on the wrist or fine these days.

Can’t say I care for any of the gutter trash, if I read a paper I want news not gossip and I want it to last more than 2 minutes

One paper gone but the tactics for getting stories remain for others.

At one aircraft wreck dig some human remains were found and the dig stopped while police were informed . First on the scene was a local reporter, he had been tipped off by his police contact and he filed a story which was printed locally and then syndicated nationally. The story was not a positive one for the recovery group or the relatives of the crew, the crew all had graves and it was upsetting.

Around 9 years ago a friend of mine was hounded out of a small village due to a press report that he was running a brothel there. It was not true and no conviction took place. He moved many many miles away and cut contact with all his friends. The person who supplied the story was paid around £2,000 from News of the World, and that person was not a reporter.

So the idea of paying for information and also paying private investigators is part of the newspaper world at a certain tabloid level.

My thoughts exactly. The closure is just an uber-cynical ploy to let the Murdoch top brass off the hook, at the expense of 200 jobs and a 168 year old UK cultural icon…
