I heard on the radio just now, the second Senior Police Officer has resigned pending the Parliamentary enquiry into the NOTW bribery, phone tapping allegation.
By resigning, they retain their highly lucrative Pensions, and Superanuation Lump sum.
Not stupid, are they?. and once again it’s the Met.

Quite the opposite.
You’re an ex-policeman.
Your thread is corrupted.
Bang on!:D

Steady on Baz, I could take exception to that, and bear in mind, it’s RED PEN day today.

Sorry Interflug, sarcasm is seldom my style but on this occasion it seemed to be the most appropriate response to your extraordinary claims.

I am certainly not denying the advantages of the Kindle – just saying it’s not for me. And downloading books doesn’t interest me because the pleasure of a book is searching for it, feeling it, handling it, examining it and then buying it and reading it.
One of my real pleasures is browsing book shops and stalls, when I get the chance, and finding something to enjoy. I buy paperbacks in a local second-hand shop if I just want a quick novel to read and then take them back to the shop next time I visit.

S.H. Pete, I too have many, many books all of which relate to the many and varied interests I have.or have had.
Yes, I have a Kindle, and I will be taking it into hozzy on Wednesday, and hopefully, be able to read Churchills Wizards, much better than trying to hold a book when lying in bed.Plus, When you loan a friend a book, chances are you never see it again, but you would never lend them your Kindle.;)and it’s cheaper to download a book on a Kindle.

When I was travelling in the Balkans and Turkey in the early 60s the Air Mail edition of the Daily Telegraph was a godsend!!
Much as though I dislike the idea I imagine it is inevitable. I don’t read papers for news anyway but for comment and features. Personally I don’t enjoy reading anything on a screen other than emails and I would never entertain a Kindle but I know they are selling like hotcakes – I know you have one – and I will mourn the loss of the conventional book, of which I have a rather good library.
How on earth did you get this thread on to books??;)

The opinions of two very good friends of mine I’m afraid. One in Venezuela, and the other in Colombia, both working in those places, one for 2 years, and the other a little longer. Still, what would they know.
Well according to the “World Curruption Perception Index”, which is based on 3rd party opinion such as what you are putting forward, the UK comes out as 20th whereas Columbia is 78th and Venezuela is 164th, not far ahead of Somalia who are bottom at 178th!
Obviously your friends know better!

[QUOTE=Sky High;1778406]So, just to be clear, your two friends judge the level of corruption in the UK as comparable to Venezuela and Columbia.
Re thread 87, what a load of Tosh. I had(Died of H/Attack)a good friend, who went to Columbia, to look at and collect redundant Lighthouse items, for restoration and then selling on.
He had to “Hire” 4 Mercenaries, all of who were armed with A.K.47s, for his own safety, and it cost him £50.000 in backhanders to high officials to “Obtain” what he wanted to buy from the Lighthouse authorities who also wanted a rake off to sell him the items he wanted.
He left the country and went home to Aus, when the 4 containers arrived in Aus, one was filled with rubble and rubbish, ripped off completely.
He got iin touch with the men he had given backhanders to, and surprise, surprise, they all denied being corrupt.I don’t think we can even begin to contemplate any comparison whatsoever with Venezuela and Columbia.
We may have a few bad apples, but it’s nowhere near the levels of those two Countries.

If that is the case, in their opinion, then I am heartily gratified to learn that things are many times better in those two South American republics than I ever thought and better than much of what is written about them.
Good to hear.

What I have noticed this week is that the Daily Mail, on Sunday is giving offers etc, to no doubt try and get ex NOTW readers to read Their paper.
At the end of the day it’s all about money, and is anyone realy interested?, never read the paper, but can understand the upset re the phone tapping has caused, but the majority at Wapping are suffering for the actions of just a few.
Mind you, is there ANY paper on the Market that can honestly say, hand on heart, that every story in their paper is 100% the truth?.and the methods they used to get their stories is whiter than white?.
I doubt it, it’s just that they havn’t been caught out as yet.
