Scrapyard Photos; Any More?

Good to see this thread brought back to life! Keep the pics coming!

…and two more from Villacoublay, the one under the crane was taken during the last open day of this air base (I think it was in 1982) but it’s end was a matter of weeks… like the other Broussard.

Spitfire Survivors

A little off-topic but in case anyone else is interested.

Not the same style as “Mustang Survivors” – much more detail on the individual history of each survivor (see the 1986 edition for style).

There will also be a number of new chapters on survivor-related activities which did not appear in the 1986 edition.

We will be using more photos per aircraft than we did before.

No, it won’t be published by Midland Counties.

We will be putting much more onto the website in due course – including a pre-order form so that you can get your copy on publication day!

We’d speculate that its SR602, a Seafire F.XV, photographed at Chatham Dockyard sometime prior to March 1962 (we have a letter from the dockyard confirming its destruction dated 14/3/62). It had been used in a fire-fighting demonstration at the 1955 Navy Day on Easter Day.

Yep that’s it alright.

I was just extending my radius of Spitfire operation, moving up from the bycycle, with the aquisition of a rather large AJS motorcycle.

My pal and I did Hawkinge to see the gate guard MK356 and then moved on to the ‘Navy Day’ at Chatham to follow up the rumour of the Seafire XV on the fire dump… and sure enough there it was. It would have been the summer of 1960 or possibly 1961.

Even in that state what would it be worth today, plus or minus on £250k I’ll be bound.

The Lightning photo is taken on Otterburn in Northumberland, it does say that next to the pics on John Kippens website :diablo:

If memory serves I think its XP702, I don’t think there are any airframes left there now.

A long-shot, I know, but does anybody know about the HP Hastings that was on the dump at the east end of the runway at RAF Wildenrath in the late 1970s (77-78 I think). As a forces brat from a nearby camp, I would cycle on and around the base, very rarely getting challenged…..never actally! The dump was right by the Bloodhound dispersals.

A very nice chap at an undisclosed location let me rob some panels from a dieing fast-jet – never thought I’d be sad to see this particular type go….the moral of the story is that when an aircraft is being scrapped ‘rob first, wonder what you’re going to do with the bits later’
