The Last Film You Saw…. 2!!!

Watched a few movies today. First up was Hitman (blu-ray). I thought it was pretty good. Didn’t really relate to the game so much, but it was still a unique and interesting film. Then, I decided to really test out the upconversion on the Blu-ray player. Threw in a copy of 1996’s Screamers, one of my all-time favorite films. I was really impressed, you’d have thought you were watching a high-definition film. There was very little noise in the picture (a common issue with upconverting older DVDs) and the level of detail that the Blu-ray player brought out was really suprising. Had I known it would be this good, I would’ve gotten a Blu-ray player a while ago. It really is worth the investment for that feature alone, I think.

Oh yeah, also watched Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Movie. We got it for Alex for Easter (he actually sat through the entire thing, which is rare) and it was really pretty good. Matthew Broderick, Patrick Warburton, Chris Rock, and John Goodman were great additions to the voice cast. A really enjoyable and hilarious film.

You could say…second greatest movie ever (behind Predator)? 😀

Anyhoo, the flatmate stole a bunch of crap DVDs from her cousin.
Some Disney-Lindsay Lohan crapfest, Man of the House (which actually wasn’t that bad) and XXX2 – The Next Level, which was God-awful!

Does your,or any,new Blu-Ray player upscale ordinary discs?

It does upscale normal DVDs, and does a pretty freaking good job of it, too. As far as I can tell, all blu-ray players will do that. Just make sure you get one with a LAN jack in the back or you’ll have problems in a few months!

The Mist-based on a Stephen King mini story.

I saw a commercial on TV advertising the DVD release, they showed a lot more of the badness going on and I have to say it looked pretty good. I’m not a King fan, but this is one I will definitely pick up. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be coming out on HD-DVD (yes, they are still releasing those) or Blu-ray.

I sat down and watched Will Smith in I Am Legend (blu-ray) tonight. Now, I never read the book, nor did I see the old adaptation, so I had no preconceived notions of what I should’ve seen. What I did see (in really awesome clarity I might add) was yet another flawless performance from Will Smith in a really good movie. The flashback sequences were done really well, telling the story of how New York came to be a wasteland. This was just a really, really good movie I thought.

Aliens – what more can I say?

You could say…second greatest movie ever (behind Predator)? 😀

Jumper. Absolutely lame. If you’re thinking about going to see this, change your plans and do the dishes instead, or shuffle your furniture around a bit, or see how far you can stretch your earlobe. Those things are far more fun than seeing that horrible waste of… well, anything that’s spent on it.

And can Hayden Christiansen please choose a proper career? Driving tractors or selling hardware or changing oil or mowing lawns? He’ll be far better at those than he’ll ever be at acting.

Baz, is that out already? I remember reading the story years ago, and it creeped the bejesus out of me!! Bloody good, though!

The Mist-based on a Stephen King mini story.Ably directed by Frank Darabont,who also directed two other King stories ( Shawshank and Green Mile),this is a cracking creepy monster story.There’s tiny monsters,medium size monsters,great big monsters and spiders of all sizes,and you wouldn’t wanna play with any one of them.Add to the mix a religious vs scientific debate about how to get saved,loads of “jumpy” bits (some you see coming but most times you don’t),a pretty good 5.1 soundtrack,a couple of beers and some popcorn and you should have an entertaining 126 minutes.

Aliens – what more can I say? 😎

Blade II – superior sequel to the very good original.

Currently watching Blade Trinity – slightly lackluster follow-up to the former, slightly made up for by the appearance of Jessica Biel…:diablo:

AVP on Blu-Ray. Got a Blu-Ray player Tuesday and this seemed like a great first choice. The film, which I always thought was a decent movie, looks absolutely fabulous in 1080p. I also got I Am Legend and Hitman on Blu-Ray, I’ll be watching those this weekend (haven’t seen either one yet). Now I can’t wait for AVP:R and Predator to come out on Blu-Ray in April 😀

At last the High Def DVD war is over thank goodness.For the first time ever,I was not an early adopter,thereby usually losing out to the eventual winner.I stayed with a multi-region player that upscaled to 1080I and P to my monitor and projector.
I know that,as for the present,Blu-Ray discs are not region coded,but for how long.Does your,or any,new Blu-Ray player upscale ordinary discs?

And on a lighter note………….
Michael Clayton-a gripping legal thriller.Tilda Swinton is brilliant (I don’t need to tell you that she has an Oscar sitting somewhere on her mantle piece),Tom Wilkinson is manic and Mr Clooney is in cruise control,seemingly making his job look so easy.Certainly not a blockbuster but very enjoyable none the less.
Oh,did I say I preferred this to No Country For Old Men?

I’m a big fan of Korean films and would like to know what you thought of this film.As far as I know,it tells a story about the suppression/murder of a student uprising in a so-called democracy.

No reply,so I had to find out for myself.I got the 3 disc edition in a beautiful presentation box.
I slapped this into the player earlier this week and,as I thought,it’s the story of events leading up to the 1980 Gwanju massacre in South Korea when thousands of students and protesters were killed by armed troops during an anti-government demonstration.
Chillingly,it reminds me of what’s going on in Tibet and a few northern Chinese states.

Went to see No Country For Old Men yesterday evening.

Being a great Coen-bros fan, I wasn’t dissapointed. Nice to see them do a really dark film again, only slightly enlightened by absolutely hilarious dialogue. And although it wasn’t wacky at all, I do think it was a bit reminiscent of Raising Arizona though: I couldn’t help thinking that Llewelyn Moss is a more realistic H.I. McDunnough (not just because of the desert trailer home and Scottish name), and Anton Chigurh a slightly less over-the-top Leonard Smalls.

And anyone going to Belgium for whatever reason: try a Hasseltse Koffie. I usually go to the theatre in Belgium, and that tasty, warm and alcoholic beverage is one of the reasons 😉

I also recently watched Chaos on DVD. Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes are in this one, a cop film about a very weird bank robbery. This was a really good movie I thought, but I am partial to anything with Statham. If you like Statham, or if you like movies along the lines of The Negotiator or The Inside Man, check this one out.

The Jammed,a quality independent film from Australia that covers a difficult subject (forced prostitution) and is well worth a view.Cracking performances all round.

National Lampoon’s Vacation , first of the whole DVD boxset I got for christmas. Still a classic which cracks me up 😀

Saving Private Ryan on DVD A great film still brings a lump to my throat every time i watch it.

27 Dresses a romcom for the girls in the family very predictable but keeps the other-half happy!!

Airplane! – Brilliant, laugh-a-minute classic that still surprises with the subtlety of some of its jokes.

Fight Club – The flatmate’s first chance to see this…. and she didn’t like it! Oh well, you win some…. :rolleyes:
