India has to come a long way before it makes something like the Gripen. It may make bigger fighters in future but may still lack the fineese of SAAB and other western/Russian designs.

There is no shame in that even the Chinese had to go through the learning process as well with a much larger budget and reverse engineering and also whole hearted support from their Air Force.

So yes with JVs and ToTs India will get there one day but to say the LCA is anywhere near the Gripen now is absolute jingoism. IMO it may struggle to beat even the JF-17 interms of airframe performance however it may make up for that with more advanced avionics/weapons.

Awaiting the artillery barrage from my countrymen……

Relying on an exclusively ADA designed AMCA will be a bit unwise on the IAFs part. The thing is that there are not many HAL/ADA can partner with in the development of a fifth generation fighter, LM already has its hands full with F 35, Boeing is looking at sixth generation, Dassault is skipping the fifth gen and working on the UCAVs. Countries like Japan South Korea and Brazil are in no better state than India interms of developing a fighter. The only other partner is SAAB, which may work out well but they don’t have any powerplants either and with the Kaveri up in the air there is that huge potential for delay on that as well.

In effect IAF is playing it safe with the FGFA but I can’t help but think the FGFA money going into R&D for the AMCA including engines may have gained better results. Then again each organization has its own priorities and when it comes down to that i guess defense of the nation in the short term is just as important.

But if its not 50-50 or atleast 80-20 is it worth participating in the project ? Unless you get ToT for everything including engines it is not worth it. They could have easily put the amount spent on the FGFA into the AMCA and gotten a western design partner like SAAB to co-operate in its design. The powerplant would be an issue but that can perhaps be sourced from France.

I think IAF is basically looking at it as a fighter acquisition program and by going the JV route it avoids the long drawn out tendering process like the MRCA which is mandatory under the new Defense Procurement Policies. Any spin offs and design expeirence should be treated as a bonus.

What is more important, maintaining quality advantage over your foes in the short term future or developing a fighter than can cut it with the best of them in the medium term future. Few may argue that the IAF will go for both but I cannot help but think that the AMCA will be given a lower priority than the FGFA by the IAF. For example ACM P.V Naik was quoted saying that what the IAF wants from the MCA project is a good fourth generation mutlrirole aircraft, again suggesting it won’t be considered in the top tier with the FGFA.

Sadly I miss my old friend Abhimanyu, because finally his words on the FGFA are looking very true indeed.

The F 18 E/F is a totally different aircraft and some of the new age Eurocanards flew well before the first SUper Hornet prototype.

May be initially they experimented with and without the blackpatch and then later made it standard.

More like 45 mins on-station rather than 45 minutes flying time.

It depends on the adversary. For example 40 year old Mig 21s upgraded to Bison standard are still competetive against Pakistan. An MLUd early block F 16 is still going to be compettive in the next decade.

Because the Americans had more advanced fighters in their inventory before they delivered Block 60s. At the time of delivery of the Su 30 to India were better than anything in the Russian inventory, probably still is.

IMO the chances for IAF being interested in the F-35 were very slim, which is why Lockheed has not hard sold it to them. They have just done a bit & the IN is a better probable customer for the follow on Aircraft carriers.

The IAF currently has plans for 250-300 FGFAs & will take around 150-200 AMCAs. Given that, there is less room for a JSF. If the IAF would have had place or indicated a need for another 5G type, Lockheed & the USG would have stepped up, why not secure an additional customer early.

If an American MRCA is selected may be the F 35 will come as its replacements 30 years from now :diablo:

    To punch harder 😉

How about trying to Punch an SU 30 MKI armed with 8 R77s and 4 R73s with
JF 17 armed with a few SD 10s and A-Darters :diablo:
