Defence Minister: Agni-V IRBM Ready For First Test
The Indian Agni-V intermediate range ballistic missile is ready is ready for its first test, Defence Minister AK Antony said in Hyerabad on Friday. The actual test, however, is likely to be conducted only sometime in January-March next year. DRDO sources confirmed once again that Spring 2011 was the likely time that the 5,000-km range weapon would first be tested. Notwithstanding the Minister’s comments, DRDO sources indicated that the first Agni-V was about 90 per cent complete, with minor work on the missile’s third stage and heatshield assemblies remaining. The team is also working overtime to ensure there are no quality control issues that have dogged two previous tests under the Agni programe. By November, the first missile should be complete in all respects for its first flight test, though a comprehensive routine of subsystem tests will continue till the end of the year. With the February test, the Agni-III completed its routine of tests and is now ready for induction into India’s nuclear force structure.
The problem is that Russia also claims some of the area claimed by Canada as the extension of their continental shelf.
The problem is with the people and not governments. Yemeni population may not like civilian causalities caused by a foreign power and will question whether the govt is losing sovereignty, the extremists can take advantage of the situation in PR terms as well. Same thing happens in Pakistan the govt there is fine with American drone attacks but is forced to rebuff them because of the popular sentiment against them.
India asks for enhanced systems on third Il-76 AEW
The third Ilyushin Il-76 airborne early warning aircraft ordered by the Indian air force will carry additional systems for enhanced performance. The AEW aircraft is expected to arrive later this year in Israel for preparation by Israel Aerospace Industries’ Elta Systems subsidiary, for delivery to India in 2011.
Two converted Il-76s carrying the Elta AEW Phalcon suit have already been delivered to India. Based on their operational experience India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation has asked IAI to add to the third aircraft systems for enhanced performance.
IAI has no comment on the request, but it is understood that the additional systems may include sensors that would improve the “threat picture” even under adverse conditions.
In the meantime, India experts are visiting Israel regularly.
The Indian ministry of defence is seeking proposals to further bolster AEW capabilities with either additional converted Il-76s or smaller platforms such as the Gulfstream G550 with Israeli systems.
Earlier this year India requested a proposal from IAI for another three Il-76s. That deal could be worth around $1.5 billion.
Was it not the other way around, UAE wanted the XL airframe and USG/LM didn’t want to give them that.
ADE’s first micro air vehicle may take off in 4 months
BANGALORE: The Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a defence laboratory that comes under the country’s nodal Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is confident that it will be ready with its first micro air vehicle (MAV) by the end of the year.
The programme’s director, VS Chandrasekharan, told ET that ADE, along with the National Aeronautical Laboratory, has designed and developed MAVs for counter-terrorism, urban warfare and relief and rescue operations, and expects to take another three-four months to deliver the final product.
“We are ready with the finished product for a particular specification, an MAV weighing 300 gm. Based on this, we are creating something for low-intensity conflicts,” Mr Chandrasekharan said. Micro and nano air vehicles are used to provide information in real time, while taking videos and transmitting the same back to the ground, enabling minimum reaction time. With miniaturisation being of paramount importance in developing the platform, efforts are on to design MAVs of 100 mm to 200 mm in size, and weighing less than 200 gm.
Mr Chandrasekharan also pointed out that the agency was ready to design MAVs of particular specifications rather than a single product of a generic design. According to him, the platform has received keen interest from the country’s military and paramilitary forces.
“The armed forces have expressed interest. Which is why we have been making the products and giving it to them to use it. The flight demonstrations have been seen by the integrated defence services, and we have received a very positive feedback so far,” Mr Chandrasekharan said. Terming the project as low investment, Mr Chandrasekharan said each MAV is expected to cost around `10 lakh.
Funnily enough it wan’t long back that you gave me reply that seemed more passion than wisdom. But as for now, I have no doubt about the Indian Army’s determination to fight things through to the bitter end, but I have every doubt about whether the government will allow them to. The Indian voter is hardly as strategic-minded as you say, we generally decide votes over far more petty matters. No government is going to lose an election solely over loss of territory, because here people and government alike are sadly too busy bickering over various domestic matters to care much.
Actually it is during the conflicts that Indians tend to forget the domestic issues and stand together. Have you noticed that during every escalation with Pakistan all top Muslim leaders pledge their total support in a war. I think even the Maoists will join the fight against an external aggressor. And you underestimate the Indian voter.
India Developing Laser-Based Anti-Missile Systems
NEW DELHI – Indian scientists are developing laser-based anti-ballistic missile systems called Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs).
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), DEW weapons can kill incoming ballistic missiles by bombarding them with subatomic particles or electromagnetic waves. The weapons could intercept missiles soon after they were launched toward India.
A DRDO scientist said laser-based weapons have been tested. One of these weapons is the air defense dazzler, which can engage enemy aircraft and helicopters at a range of 10 kilometers. This weapon will be ready for induction in two years.
India’s laser weapons can be deployed in the Navy’s submarines and destroyers, and Air Force fighters and transport planes.
The DEW laser weapon is capable of producing 25-kilowatt pulses that can destroy a ballistic missile within seven kilometers, the scientist said.
In addition, Indian scientists are testing the Prithvi homemade anti-ballistic missile system, which can kill ballistic missiles at a height of up to 80 kilometers. The first-phase Prithvi is likely to be inducted by 2013, said the DRDO scientist.
Scientists are working on developing second-phase Prithvis capable of killing incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Australian Naval ship `HMAS Parramatta” visits Mumbai
Mumbai, Aug 24 (PTI) Royal Australian Naval Ship, HMAS Parramatta, an ANZAC class frigate, paid a goodwill visit to Mumbai port from August 18 to 23. The name Parramatta is the oldest name for a ship in the Australian Navy, and is the fourth Royal Australian Navy Vessel to bear this name, a defence spokesperson said. The ship has a compliment of 25 officers and 150 sailors and is commanded by Commander Heath Robertson. HMAS Parramatta is based at Sydney and was on her passage back after a six-month deployment in the North Arabian Sea, as part of Maritime Coalition Forces. There were extensive interactions between the ships crew and Indian Navy personnel from the Western Naval Command, the spokesperson said. These included ship visits, onboard receptions and friendly sports fixtures. The Commanding Officer of the ship also paid a courtesy call on Rear Admiral Sunil Lanba, the Flag Officer Commanding, Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area. The past few years have witnessed a steady growth of Indo-Australian Naval cooperation and the visit by HMAS Parramatta underscores this growth, the spokesperson said. Besides exercises at sea, this cooperation also manifests itself through port visits by ships, maritime seminars and exchange of personnel, he said.
Only 7 Of 16 Submarines Operational: CAG Report
New Delhi, Aug. 24: Only seven Indian Navy submarines were operational out of the total fleet of 16 submarines till October last year, a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has stated.
The CAG report noted, “It is pertinent to mention that only seven out of 16 submarines in the Indian Navy are operational and nine submarines are under refit/repair as of October, 2009.”
The CAG report noted that “75 per cent submarines in the Indian Navy fleet have already completed three-fourths of their estimated operational life.” Another CAG report submitted two years ago had said the average operational availability of Indian naval submarines “is as low as 48 per cent”.
Meanwhile, the CAG report also lambasted the “inordinate delay in commissioning the Indian Navy submarine rescue facility in the absence of a conclusive time-bound agreement with the US Navy”.
The CAG report estimated the response time to be 72 hours for launch of any rescue operations of a submarine as it would take that long for the deep submergence rescue vessel, stationed with the US Navy, to reach the rescue site.
The Navy is worried that over the next six years, the numerical strength of the submarine fleet may come down by 40 per cent (due to phasing out) if there is no substantial augmentation of the fleet.

BrahMos likely to be inducted into Air Force by 2013
Bangalore: Low-flying supersonic cruise missile BrahMos could join the Indian Air Force by 2013, according to A. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace Limited, an Indo—Russian joint venture.
The missile, which can carry between 200 and 300 kg of explosives, would complete its flight test in 2012, Mr. Pillai told reporters on Wednesday on the sidelines of Bengaluru Space Expo 2010.
It would be developed at a cost of $350 million and fitted into the Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft
The missile, which was inducted into the Army and the Navy, is capable of land-to-ship, ship-to-land and ship-to-ship attacks.
I never knew the Chinese had such boring regions on their side that they had to attack ours and come all the way to Delhi.

India mulls deploying missiles near border in North-East
India is considering deploying its nuclear-capable ballistic missiles in the North-East close to its border with China in an apparent attempt to enhance its military preparedness. The move comes close on the release of a report by Pentagon, which suggested that China has moved its new advanced
longer range CSS-5 missiles close to its border with India and developed contingency plans to shift airborne forces to the region at short notice.
The government is considering the deployment of the 2,000 km range Agni-II and 350 km range Prithvi III surface to surface ballistic missiles close to the Chinese border, Defence Ministry sources said today.The sources said that additional land was being procured by the Army in North-West Bengal and adjoining states for deployment of these missiles.
In the recent months, India is focussed on upgrading its military infrastructure in the North-Eastern sector to counter any Chinese threat.
The measures taken by the government include the deployment of two squadrons of the Su-30 MKI fighter jets in Tezpur and Chhabua in Assam and raising of two mountain divisions for deployment in Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining areas.
The government also revised its old military doctrine of not developing roads along the border and is working on developing over 70 strategic roads on the Sino-Indian border.
