    Tell that to Turkey that just got their Heron UAV’s.

    Turkey is a modern secular state with a majority Islamic population. Totally different from an Islamic republic. Turkey historically have had good ties with Israel and Jews in general and not that good relations with the Arab countries.

    Parachute to hold IAF’s trainer plane if it falls!

    In an attempt to revive the grounded fleet of Indian Air Force’s HPT-32 trainer aircraft, the Indian aerospace engineers have come out with a unique but dangerous idea. They have decided to fit the aircraft with a huge heavy-duty parachute to prevent its free fall in case an accident occurs.

    The parachute will supposedly slow the aircraft down and lower it to the ground safely. As a result, the crew will survive, and the aircraft will escape with minor damage. But the experts feel the idea is bizarre and is unlikely to save the pilot’s life in case of emergency.

    Headlines Today broke the news in August 2009 how the IAF had grounded its entire fleet of the basic trainer aircraft following a spate of fatal crashes. However, instead of dealing with the problem at hand and making a safer airplane, the government is now examining a desperately radical stop-gap measure that cannot guarantee the safety of pilots and still cost the government billions of rupees.

    In technical terms, it is called a ballistic recovery system. But veteran pilots believe it is a terrible idea. Air Marshal A.K. Singh, the chairman of Military Advisory Council, said it showed how the authorities are completely out of ideas and paying the price for criminal negligence of flight training infrastructure.

    N-capable Agni I successfully test-fired

    Bhubaneswar: India on Sunday afternoon successfully tested its nuclear capable surface-to-surface Agni I missile from a test range in Orissa, an official said.

    The missile, which can strike a target 700 km away, was tested as part of user-trial from a facility on Wheeler Island in the district of Bhadrak by the Indian armed forces, director of the test range SP Dash said.

    “It was a fantastic launch,” he said.

    The armed forces had successfully tested two nuclear-capable missiles, Dhanush and Prithvi II, Saturday in Orissa.

    Both missiles were fired. from all accounts the Dhanush having been fired from INS Subhadhra.

    What were the reasons for the two tests?

    Was it a quality test after the failure of the target missile in the last missile defense tests? Would make sense to do a spot check once in a while make sure the missiles are not fizzling out.

    Also are all of the P51’s able to fire the Dhanush?

    No these are user trials carried out by the Armed forces from time to time.

    India successfully tests N-capable Prithvi II, Dhanush missiles

    BALASORE: India today successfully test-fired indigenously developed ballistic missiles ‘Prithvi II’ and ‘Dhanush’ from different locations off the Orissa coast, adding more firepower to the armed forces.

    “The tests were successful. Both the missiles test-fired early today met all the parameters,” the director of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, S P Dash, told PTI.

    While the ‘Prithvi II’ was test-fired from complex-3 of ITR Chandipur, 15 km from here, from a mobile launcher at around 0548 hours, the ‘Dhanush’ was fired from INS-Subhadra in the Bay of Bengal near Puri at around 0544 hours by the Navy personnel as part of user training exercise.

    The test firing of the short-range, surface-to-surface ‘Prithvi II’ ballistic missile having a range of 295 km, which has already been inducted into the armed forces, was a user trial by the Army.

    The sleek missile is “handled by the strategic force command”, the sources said.

    Prithvi, the first ballistic missile developed under the country’s prestigious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), has the capability to carry 500 kg of warhead and has liquid propulsion twine engine.

    With a nine-metre length and one-metre diameter, Prithvi II uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory and reach the targets with a few metre accuracy.

    The entire trajectory of today’s trial was tracked down by a battery of sophisticated radars and an electro-optic telemetry stations were positioned in different locations for post-launch analysis, defence sources said.

    The nuclear-capable ‘Dhanush’, the naval version of Prithvi, followed the pre-designated trajectory with text-book precision and two naval ships located near the target have tracked the splash, sources said.

    The 350-km range missile will give the Navy the capability to attack enemy targets with great precision.

    The sophisticated radar systems located along the coast monitored its entire trajectory, the sources said.

    The single stage missile, weighing six tonnes, is powered by liquid propellants.

    We know the press quality in asia. I think we need to see the video first and if he said that then I think we can trust it. I doubt that a Pakistani ACM tells lies. But is does sure sound strange. Selling what? Drone technology? That I can understand. But selling parts for planes is not something possible. BUT… If you know that the block52 have the large Israeli wing fueltanks then you can conclude something else. The usual trick of setting american firm in between to hide that.

    Even if Israel is willing to sell Pakistan will probably not buy as it may alienate her from her Arab friends. Even Malaysia chose to not have Israeli parts in their MKMs. 😉

    And this is very interesting, according to the Air Chief, through back channels,Israel has approached and offered military equipment to Pakistan.

    Any source to substantiate this rather than an off the book remark by the PAF chief ?

    I find myself in a position of agreement with Rimmer over this. America always tries to sell weapons to potential enemies, in effect it is often their way to keep in check regional tensions.

    Whether we will buy the F 16/F 18 or not America will still continue to sell weapons to Pakistan. But what we need to loook at is whether some attack choppers, a handful of F 16s and precision guided munition will alter the balance in anyway (look at what the IAF will be inducting and has already inducted). The answer is NO.

    Every country has the right of self-defense so I cannot blame Pakistan for trying to get the most out of the Americans over their help in fighting the Taliban either.

    In truth India will always be offered better weapons than Pakistan (simply because we have more money and need more numbers). Whether we buy from Americans or elsewhere is more of a foriegn policy issue.

    I really do not understand the fuzz about the PAF F 16s all of a sudden. It was long known they were going to be delivered.

    Indian F 16s if bought will be superior and Lockheed has an India office not a Pakistan one, its clear where their priorities lie.

    I think it may be because of the rarefied atmoshphere because most of the fighters in the MRCA competition are used to extreme cold weather in their home countries.

    Several people, Mods and myself did not like it because it was basically a thread put up to produce flame. Nothing less. Glad it was deleted.

    Mods and yourself :rolleyes:. It was basically a news thread, and yes it had Indian strategic news in it, but as I said you could have posted the Pakistani view point from many of your news papers.

    The second purpose of that thread was to take politics centered heated discussions happening in the more technical sections of this forum, like Modern Military Aviation to the General Discussion section, because thats the usual place for rants and stuff in most fora I have been to.

    Sadly people including yourself failed to understand this and hence i deleted the thread. People in this forum seem to be happy to use the GD section for odd stuff like youtube songs and British tabloid news. :rolleyes:

    India to test-fire short-range missiles

    MUMBAI: India is expected to test-fire three types of short-range missiles on the weekend, local media reported on Friday evening.

    The test of Prithvi-2, a short-range ballistic missile with the range of nearly 290 kilometers, is likely to be conducted on Saturday from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore district of the eastern state of Orissa, the news agency Press Trust of India quoted a defense source as saying.

    A naval version of Prithvi, Dhanush, may be test-fired on the same day from a warship off the Orissa coast, according to the source.

    Agni-1, a short-range ballistic missile with the range of about 700 kilometers, will be jointly tested from Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast on Sunday by the Army and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), said the news agency.

    India successfully test-fired a vertical-launch version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile off the Orissa coast on March 21. However, its indigenous anti-missile system failed to track and intercept a mocked ballistic missile in the test on March 15.

    It will be the first time for the Indian armed forces to test-fire three types of different missiles within two days from the beginning of this year.

    Stopping ballistic missile

    The deployment of India’s planned ballistic missile shield is to start in two years’ time. The Defence Research and Development Organisation, which is developing and testing the complex system, intends to roll it out in two phases and have all of it up and running by 2016. The first phase will deal with missiles having a range of less than 2,000 km, and the second will tackle missiles with a longer range. The latter will be travelling much faster than the former and are therefore less easily targeted. There will be interceptors to destroy the incoming missiles at heights of over 50 km as well as much closer to the ground. Such a tiered defence is intended to boost the chances of knocking out an incoming missile before it hits the target. The problems encountered with a Prithvi missile simulating an enemy attack in a recent test is not likely to be a serious setback to these plans. India is not the only country that seeks to protect its citizens from enemy missiles carrying nuclear and other lethal warheads. The United States has been developing anti-ballistic missile systems for over 60 years. Its highly ambitious missile shield aims to destroy ballistic missiles during all stages of their flight. In February 2010, the U.S. successfully tested an airborne laser carried aloft on a modified Boeing 747, which was used to destroy a missile less than two minutes after it was fired. Israel, Japan, and the Taiwan regime too intend to establish missile defence capabilities. China, which demonstrated its anti-satellite capability in 2007, successfully conducted a mid-course missile interception test in January this year. Russia has a system of its own that was developed during the Cold War.

    A big unanswered question is how effective any of these missile shields, including the Indian one, will be in an actual conflict situation, especially if it is between nuclear-armed nations. The technical evaluation of the U.S. system carried out by the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 is instructive. It found that there were a range of countermeasures an attacker could take to “confuse, overwhelm or otherwise defeat the defence.” Any country capable of deploying a long-range missile would be able to use them. Decoys could overload a defensive system and allow attacking missiles to slip past. Besides, even the U.S. system is intended to be effective against only a “limited ballistic missile attack.” The Indian defensive shield too will have similar limitations: if a single nuclear-tipped missile gets through, the consequences will be calamitous. This country would do better to rely on diplomacy, rather than a chancy missile shield, to increase its security.diplomacy, rather than a chancy missile shield, to increase its security.

    India to launch rocket with own engine technology in a month

    BANGALORE: India is set to launch in a month its powerful rocket with the homemade cryogenic engine to propel a satellite into a geosynchronous orbit and become only the sixth nation to develop this complex engine.

    The much awaited launch has been billed as a landmark event for the country’s space programme after its maiden unmanned moon mission Chandrayaan-I in 2008.

    India had been using Russia-made cryogenic engines so far for satellite launchings. A cryogenic engine will be used for the first time in the rocket’s upper stage.

    Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) is getting ready for the launch of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) from the spaceport of Sriharikota expected on April 15, an ISRO source said. A geo-stationary orbit is about 36,000 km above the earth.

    “The launch is likely to be on April 15 or before April 20. Preparations are underway”, the source said, adding “The exact date of the launch will be finalised at the mission readiness review in Sriharikota on Sunday”.

    With the launch, India would join a select club of five nations–U.S., Russia, China, Japan and Israel–that had mastered the complex cryogenic technology. The mission would make New Delhi totally self-reliant in all aspects of launch vehicle technology 15 years after work was started on developing the cryogenic technology.

    It would be the first time that ISRO would launch a GSLV with indigenous cryogenic engine, a programme that was taken up in 1996 following the technology denial regime in the 1990s. The US had then forced Russia to stop giving India the technology.

    ISRO’s previous GSLV flights carried Russian cryogenic engines procured earlier. Next month’s GSLV would carry GSAT-4, a 2,200 kg technology demonstrator satellite.

    Also for the first time, ISRO would test the electric propulsion technology — plasma thrusters — that Indian space scientists developed, in GSAT-4, in addition to chemical propulsion that it had been using.

    According to ISRO officials, the electric propulsion technology is expected to boost the life of geostationary satellites by upto five years.

    “This is a concept we are going to prove in this (GSAT-4). Once proven, it can be adopted as standard for future geostationary orbits”, an ISRO official said.

    Technological challenges faced during the development of indigenous cryogenic engine and stage include those relating to new materials, composite thermal insulation, new fabrication techniques, handling of cryogenic fluids at cryogenic temperatures, realisation of facilities for assembly, integration and testing, and associated safety systems, ISRO officials said.

    ……………………..The Indian Air Force has floated a brand new tender this month for six amphibious aircraft for “search and rescue missions, inter-island communication, rapid response duties and reconnaissance of islands”. The IAF has set down a preference for a twin turboprop craft with a range of at least 800-nm. The IAF has also said it wants an aircraft with a short take-off capability, a cruising speed of about 200 knots and state-of-the-art avionics and EW kit, including RWR/MAWS. The Bombardier 415 and the Be-200 appear to be among the very few purpose-built amphibians still being built.

    Thank You Ashish, I tried to make a strategic news thread for South Asia in General Discussion and tried to post Indian strategic news there and said the Pakistani posters were welcome to post theres too. One Mod did not like news thread so I had to delete it. I hope they bring back the Army section here so most of the news can be posted. 😉
