When I think “SAC” I’m thinking in terms of flying intercontinental ranges. In the case of the Indian Air Force, yes the Su-30s are fine for dealing with Pakistan, but not for the PRC’s main strategic targets on the coastal side of the country, even if they’re playing cruise missile truck, which would really degrade their range which at altitude is 1620 miles. Problem is that with the PRC IADS, they’re going to be flying a lot on the deck.

Yeah, Backfire could get the job done (range of 4900 miles), but with the IADS that the PRCs been putting together, a smaller RCS (tweakable) and better performing engines (more difficult) would be a plus even as an ALCM truck.

I am surprised that India is not even planning on the development or acquisition of a long range bomber, like you said it is a valuable asset against the PRC.

so the AN-32 is a dedicated bomber??????

    Regards Phil

No but they may have done modifications to make it an auxiliary bomber. AN 32 is IAFs workhorse and does wide variety of jobs.

Rafale isn’t more expensive than the Typhoon, in terms of fly-away cost it might be even a tad cheaper. Who says it has become the favourite over night, maybe there is just something surfacing now. Maybe the Indians know a bit more about the various contenders now, or maybe its just a political move or whatever. So far there is no indication of a definite winner.

If you look at the Brazil thread you can see that 36 Rafale were offered for like 10 billion, the Saudis got a better deal with Typhoons with 70 odd costing less than that.

As for things surfacing in the Typhoon’s favour ? What things other than Italian ambassador saying it is a leading contender and Shiv Aroor writing about it in his blog ? Livefist.

I honestly think its between the F 16IN the Super Hornet and the Gripen.

Its offical photos given out. So it is pretty much real, IAF has been lacking a dedicated bomber platform after the retirement of the canberras.

Like Sign said what I do not understand is how the Typhoon one of the darkhorses became favourite overnight ?

The only logic i see behind it is a need to buy a plane without American parts. Mig 35 would make India too dependant on Russia and Rafale is so darn expensive.

i heard that they will be tried under THE INDIAN TELEGRAPH ACT, 1885 , even Satellite phones are not allowed in India , please don’t carry one if your visiting India, one Polish national has been arrested recently due to that , After Headley incident now even foreign nationals go through harder checks which was missing earlier

lol ITA 1885 made by the British themselves, its really odd how many antiquated British made laws still exist in India while the British themselves have amended and gotten rid of many of them. Satellite phones are allowed you need to have a license.

India can acquire the Backfire if they want. But i do think Su 30s are quite capable for that role.

Will the Americans get involved on the British side ?

They did not in 1982 but the situation now is clearly different with the British jumping to war with Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan surely, sending a CBG would avert any potential invasion.

India ordering some Rafale will go a long way towards scuppering this deal. But is the JF 17 weaponization deal going to be larger than the Mirage 2000 upgrade, KAVERI JV, SAM deal etc ?

On the DPSU and Private Sector issue, it is some of the congress leaders with socialist leanings that are causing the problems. This include Mr. Antony :(.

somehow I doubt that’s the reason. the naming is to differentiate FGFA from PAK-FA.

I think IAF do not want a Russian Name for their fifth gen fighter. Especially at the developmental stage its not going to be called FGFA or PAK FA in service so its just making the name English for reading out easily.

Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft makes much more sense in English than Future Frontline Aircraft System. 😉

May be like You said it would mean twin-seater but i doubt Russians are gonna call the fifty they are going to procure FGFA.

A total of 500 aircraft are planned with option for further aircraft. Russian Air Force will have 200 single seated and 50 twin-seated PAK FAs while Indian Air Force will get 200 twin-seated and 50 single seated FGFAs

Customisation is different from co-development is different from license production. Customised variants can be license-built, but do not have to be. See the F-16E, a customised variant for the UAE entirely built in the USA. Licence-built aircraft can be standard models, or customised. Customised models can be customised by the original manufacturer, or the licence-builder. India has built Jaguars under licence, & customised them itself. The customisation does not make them co-developed (India had no input into the original development of Jaguar), nor cause them to no longer be licence-built. The customisation is Indian-developed.

According to well informed article by Ajay Shukla which i posted here, the basic difference will only be in name. Russia will buy 50 twin seaters (call FGFA if u want name dont matter) and India 50 single seaters.

India is going to contribute 25% of all FGFA or PAK FA vairants (Russian and Indian). There will be slight difference in avionics because of operational differences of Indian and Russian air forces and the climates.

FGFA – PAK FA same thing different name.

India do not want to call their front line fighter ‘PAK’ FA.
