Remains to be seen, i bet they will fit their versions at the end
How do you know that?
How then they are developing PAKFA, and have a lot of other military programs running right now?
The pakfa is important for the aviation industry, is not only the first russian 5th generation aircraft, but also, the second 5th gen plane after the cold war years, no european 5th gen on sight, no other 5th gen plane from the USA, russians know what they are getting, why to share it? IMO it won’t happen.
Is more or less the case of the su-35 in brasil, the russians went out because the ToT thing, why ToT for such new aircraft with new electronics and structural engineering?
The involvement of India in the Pakfa, is again 0, the tales of share development between india and Russia have more than 10 years already, despite of this, russians went alone…no they didn’t wait for the indians overlords because they were broken, sorry but you are overrating the indian importance in the development, they will be customers, russians will bring them the flexibility to stuff whatever they want, but they won’t buy pakfas with fantastic indian composites (?) or great indian seekers (?)
1. You can think whatever you want.
2. Because the Yakhont is an anti ship missile, and Brahmos is multi-purpose can attack land and sea targets. For that it has to have a better seeker (for attacking land targets)
3. But other programs have suffered because of it. They want us Indians in possibly because we can pump in some cash. Same with MRT, suits both the countries.
4. India will have its own stealth fighter and 25% share in the Russian project not bad at all.
Why don’t they just use the Yakhont – why bother with the Brahmos?
The Brahmos is much better at attacking land targets, have a better seeker etc.
Type59
It is easy to belittle, but is india on the cutting edge like US or is following the establised path? You make it sound like India is learning from Russia and West and China is just copycating them, to me it sounds similiar. Infants copy their elders to learn, but we dont say they are copycating their elders.
It is not similar, India like you said at the moment have inferior indigenous capabilities, it is akin to a demanding infant being nurtured, development will be slow.
China is like a rowdy teenager stealing from the shop they are working in etc. etc. Hence it gest rich (tech-wise) fast.
They are both winners whichever wins, if it wins. BAE sponsors the Gripen, true, since Saab lacks a network of international marketing acquaintances. In fact, Saab’s promotional team is made up of englishmen 😀
So BAE actually has two proposals for India, so that they may choose whichever they think more appropriate. The same goes for many other companies and subcontractor. MBDA wins whichever of the eurocanards wins, makes weapons for them all. Selex wins if EF or Gripen wins, makes radar for both. Thales wins too, makes IRST sensors for all 3. Even EADS will win if the Rafale is selected, since EADS owns a large portion (46.22%) of Dassault.
Amazing how Europeans do business, no?? :diablo: WTF? Even american GE wins if either the SH or the Gripen wins, they have the same engine :p
With some luck, even the israelis can win, they offer EW sets and missiles for the gripen 😀
IIRC hasn’t BAE stopped marketing the Gripen. I think now it is offered directly by SAAB.
Also MBDA has less to win if EF wins, The A2A weaponry in the EF can easily be non MBDA AIM 120/IRIS T. Same with the Gripen Indian Gripen will likely have AIM 120/Python 5.
🙂
No, russians are not bothered to buy brahmos, because they think their missiles are superior.
Because they are broke. 😉 Which is a good thing we can invest some money and get a good deal and ToT.
Ok…So the LCA Mk1, is going to be produced with no radar or BVR-capability? Wow, that is awsome, producing an early 1950s jet in 2010. India should buy the blueprints of the SAAB J-29 Tunnan instead. At least that fighter had a radar…..
The MK1 IIRC has the Elta 2032 or a hybrid of the native MMR and the Elta 2032. It seems BVR weapons will be the R 77/Derby
Hardly reliable/official.
It is check the link in that thread. 😉

1) The so-called “copycat” you are talking about can produce and export almost any military product you can imagine whereas master India is the largest importer of weapons on the face of the Earth.
May be true, but it is like. Look at your neighbour he is a thief but so what he is rich now while you are still struggling.
I would rather be poor than to steal to be rich.
All techs we acquired are from JVs and legal ToTs and indigenously developed so thats good.
I hear that argument often, but I think it depents on what you get in return for your money.
Rafale with full ToT, source codes, Kaveri-Snecma engine, not limited techs, using the same weapons like several of IAF present fighters, without any restrictions, or sanction problems, offering the possibility of same fighters for IN is in my opinion a really good offer for the money.F18SH instead is reported to have limited AESA capabilities and ToT, source codes won’t be provided, customizations are not allowed, restrictions and sanction problems likely and totally new weapons must be procured.
IMO it’s like pay more, get more isn’t it?
1. Within the allocated budget of 10-12 billion i doubt one could procure 126 Rafales or Eurofighters.
2. As seen with the recent tanker cancellation, the Finance Ministry is unlikely to sanction more funds if there is a cheaper aircraft which satisfies IAFs requirements in the RFP.
3. ToT and everything you said about the Rafale is nice, but it is no substitute for Price. Rafale more than EF suffers in that regard for its weapons are all European and hence more pricey than its American counterparts which are available in case of the Eurofighter. The French wants nearly 34 million per aircraft to upgrade IAF Mirages, imagine how much it would cost to upgrade the Rafales (126 of them) in future ?
4. There is always the Gripen and the MIG to fall back, both come with full ToT and Source Code for Radars and are much cheaper than the Rafale.
5. Many of the things regarding the super hornet are pure speculation and not official, the lack of source codes, dumb down AESA etc are quoted from random officers here and there from USN and others
=> the 01/10/2010 the Rafale own officially the “second best” titlle in AA, it’s now up to the EF to take it back during another meeting
I agree a small correction. Second best among the western fighters. I hope for a joint exercise of Rafale with Su 30MKI or Su 35 before they can claim that.
It is not much disturbing during BVR and I doubt that in WVR it make huge impact. The only extra would be that besides your avionics telling you what happens you might see a few seconds some smoke.
ZHUK ME has better range than APG 68V9 in PAF Falcons (block 52+). So it is likely to make a difference in BVR. In WVR smokeless engine means it will be a bit harder to spot, and R73M/Topsight combo is as potent (if not more) as JHMCS/AIM9L.
Its not A2A against a legacy airframe, its an overwhelming result out of the blue against the two aircraft which are rated as better or comparable to the Rafale.
Against the Typhoon yes.
Losing only once against the Raptor is a great result but does not make the Rafale superior to it.
By the fact that IAF is searching for a Mi 26 heavy lift replacement, wouldn’t CH 53 Super Stallion, or even the new CH 53K be the best US options?
I think ToT is the bigger problem for US fighters, if they really will come only in limited versions why should IAF take them over latest European fighters with big ToT offers?
1. I think IAF is interested because of the twin rotor.
2. The European fighters especially the twin engined ones are too expensive. The Gripen do stand a chance.
The MiG 29 As are going to be re-engined and brought to SMT+ standards.
