Oh stop splitting hairs. Tank action implied engagement of other tanks.

When I see concrete proof of Kuwaiti engagement of Iraqi armor, I will concede. Some vague mentions of this are not good enough – in Western circles, it has practically become the bible that Merkavas destroyed T-72s with ease, when in reality they never met on the battlefield. I take these m84 claims in the same light.

Hmm, seems like Ka-52s are not going to be delivered in the new grey scheme, at least for now?

Nice to see progress @ the Progress plant, just a few years ago it was dead, and I though the Ka-50 program was going to the dust.

Apparently they are looking at increasing the number of target engagement practices for all vehicle crews in SAM regiments. Minimum of 6 targets per crew in 2012….nice.

You know, I really am not interested in getting into one of these stupid “you claimed this, that, etc etc ” arguments that you so love. I clearly said tank action in my first post, implying engagement of Iraqi vehicles.

Participated in defense might mean “rolled out and were captured within an hour”. Everything I’ve seen on the big tank forums (Otvaga, tank.net) doesn’t indicate anything to back up this supposed “slaughtering” of T-62s and T-55s performed by M84s.

All I am saying about the subject.

You think a pic of it rolling by a destroyed Iraqi tank is proof that it destroyed it? Oh brother. There are pictures of Marines next to destroyed T-55s, guess they personally took them out.

see above, M84’s slaughtered T-55s and T-62s at the early part of the war before their roles changed to prevent confusion with Iraqi T-72s.

Evidence, for this supposed slaughtering? Barely any m84s were delivered (was even a dozen in country back then, and not captured in the first days of the war?) at that point.

I think what TR1 means is, no Kuwaiti M84s actually engaged Iraqi forces, fired any shots at them, although I don’t remember the details.

Exactly. There is zero evidence of them engaging Iraqi tanks, and knocking them out. They certainly did not spearhead any counterattacks.

It is? you’re probably right, but the MKI has an extra pair of eyes – very important in WVR combat, or so they say.

SM has newer engines so should have better thrust-to-weight than MKI, am I right?

Yeah, that’s what I am going off. Lighter weight + slightly smoother profile + FM1 engines = at least some advantage in WVR. Not that the MKI would be completely screwed or anything…

Russian tanks? You mean Soviet right? Those Yugoslav tanks are basically licensed T-72s in any case. And Kuwaiti M84s did not see any tank action, only a few were delivered before the war, and they didn’t do anything.

The fact is “UK and US pilots” dual against Flankers all the time – Indian air force Flankers. has no one here ever heard of Red Flag, or the “Indra-Dhanush’ joint exercise” in India?

Where does the RuAF actually go for dissimilar combat training? I don’t think they even go to India (afraid of the Su-30MKI, perhaps:rolleyes:)?

Why would they be afraid of the MKI, the Su-27SM is better at a knife fight.

Middle East (Gulf states) buying Russian equipment was seen as extremely unlikely in the 90s, but to everyone’s surprise they had quite a few sales for Armored Vehicles in the region after they trialed them against competitors, and performed very well.

Of course aviation products would face significant hurdles, its too bad the competition isn’t a fair playing ground.

How is it likelier? They talked about modernizing existing Su-30MKMs to a similar standard as the Indian Super-30s. That would include BrahMos.

Of course it is not implausible they will go for more MKMs, but it certainly isn’t fact. Like I said though, the Defense Minister said it was very likely they would be acquiring the Yak-130 when visiting Irkut.

-And non specifics regarding other stuff we already knew (Su-35, Mi-35, etc)

I do not see any certainty with Malaysia. the Malaysians just said it was great and that’s it. they ordered more MKMs during that visit, not Yaks.
they already operate MB-339CM that they got in 2006 to replace ANOTHER Aermacchi aircraft. there’s no need yet for a new type, and if they did, they already havea history of Aermacchi trainers that may be a plus for M-246.

No they didn’t. No further orders for the MKM have been placed, the only firm thing is a desire to modernize the plane in the future. Regarding the Yak-130, the AF Chief indicated it was almost certain Malaysia would work with the plane in the future.
