Its not about looks but about capability. Nothing I have seen suggests that the F 35 would be less capable than the PAK FA.

Anyone with half a set of brains can tell PAK-FA will better the F-35 in terms of raw performance.

Kirov’s as well for me. 885 will have cruise missile capability anyways, no need for a huge missile farm for Russia’s needs.

Su-35 winning that small and insignificant Brazilian tender would do nothing in terms of speeding up the project. Suhkoi has already said domestic orders are enough, and development is finished in any case.

why does the VVS need new MiG-35s? Don’t they have enough MiG-29s lying around that could upgraded to SMT standard or even better?

    MiG-35 is much better.
Brand new airframe > old flogged one.
At the same time, support for the plant.

TBH I would not be all too surprised if the RuAF ordered a batch of MiG-35s….just as I would not be surprised if they didn’t. Yeah, I am taking the middle route here.

on the same page, AL-31F is quoted as rated 200 kgf less than the AL-31FN variant. with flow rate and inlet diameter being the same.
no, not a good evidence to show anything.

Well according to the statements the FN delivered to China has 11,700kg while the regular Al-31F is certainly rated about 12,000 kg. That is my question, was it purposeful retuning to accommodate for the J-10?

MiG-35 is hard question. It has been repeatedly mentioned that a batch would be bought sometime this decade, in pretty reliable sources as well. Even Zelin has talked about the necessity of the plane for the VVS. On the other hand Zelin says some random **** at times.

Hmm, even more Al-31s, look at that.

I never knew the AL-31FN was rated at 11,700 kg maximum, any particular reason for the lower performance than the Al-31F? Intentionally down clocked output?

    http://www.lenta.ru/news/2011/10/07/engines/

According to the General Director of Salyt, China is under talks to order ANOTHER 140 Al-31FNs (not the recent batch for 123 engines) and the contract might be signed by the end of October.

Not gonna lie, I smiled pretty big when I saw this.

Which itself is a gross simplification considering that the MiG-29M (9.15) was designed for the “Soviet system” as well. This aircraft was conceived in the 1980s and was in fact addressing many of the perceived shortcomings of the original design, like short range, low payload etc. It wasn’t a post USSR afterthought to push the aircraft’s chances on the export market. The original MiG-29 had its weaknesses like other aircraft had theirs. The early F-16s lack of BVR capability is described as a disadvantage in comparison to the MiG-29. It’s also owed to the requirements, but it doesn’t change anything about the fact, does it!?

You don’t need to go as far as the MiG-29M (which is ofc a radical redesign) to see how much they pushed out of the airframe capability and longevity wise post USSR. MiG-29SMT is what I was alluding to.
