Where are they located? The Helicopter Museum at Weston-Super-Mare or the Army Air Museum at Middle Wallop would be a good start, or are there any local airfields with a helicopter operation (who may well respond favourably to a polite email or phone call)?
The Helicopter Museum has info on open cockpit days
According to a reverse image search on google, it’s a 1927 Mitsubishi 2MR1 Tobi recce a/c. You might need Google translate.
According to Jarrod Cotter’s book ‘The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight: 50 Years of Flying’, Quill displayed AB910 on behalf of Vickers-Armstrong until it was presented to the RAF in 1965. I’m guessing that pre the BoB film there were few opportunities after that, unless he got a back seat ride in G-AIDN at some point?
I can’t help with the images, but it might be worth contacting Solent Sky museum in Southampton who specialise in Supermarine and other local manufacturers and who may have photos or drawings?
Hello Katie. Have you tried Military Aviation – PPRuNe Forums? A lot of current and past RAF members post there, and I’ve seen a few requests similar to yours in the past.
The extract from the report you quoted was from a previous accident to this aircraft in 2016, I almost fell for that as well assuming you got it from this site
as they confusingly run the previous report below the current one.
Re Propstrikes comment that the gear was not lowered, do you have a source for that? The pictures of the recovery I have seen show the starboard u/c down and the port partly retracted, also two skid marks on the runway. Looks more like a partial gear collapse leading to a runway excursion to my eye.
Mods I hope pasting a link to WIX is ok?
Warbird Information Exchange • View topic – Another incident for the CAF P-51C pilot uninjured
There is a picture of ‘434 in ‘Spitfire Survivors ‘ dated 1954 showing the long intake.
Yes, it is at Duxford, in the ARCO hangar. Now registered as G-WLRS.
I haven’t got a copy myself, but I was in The Works in Scarborough yesterday and they were selling the Haynes manual for the Wellington for £7 if that’s any help.
That rang a bell, I’m sure I also read a thread (on WIX?) about it, it went into quite a lot of detail. A quick Google came up with this precis, it is the ex TFC example.

‘While based in Sweden, in the late 1990s SE-BGK adopted what was thought to be its original Swedish identity as 26158 of Flygvapnet Wing F16. In 2002 the aircraft was sold to The Fighter Collection becoming “Twilight Tear”, G-CBNM. In 2007, it moved to the USA subsequently becoming N98CF and later, after a legal judgement on its heritage, being painted as “Fragile But Agile”.’
I think the Bf 109 is being restored by Guy Black (G-CTDI). There was an article recently about the DH9 where he mentioned it.
The Strathallan Hurricane G-AWLW was an aircraft ‘restored’ in Canada and imported for the Battle of Britain film., and subsequently bought by the Collection. It was later purchased by the Canadian Warplane Heritage but was completely destroyed in the hangar fire which also claimed a Spitfire IX and Avenger.
On looking closer, the book says crashed Banbury, Shropshire… I suspect the mix-up was due to 5 FPP being based at Thame, near to Banbury in Oxfordshire – perhaps that was the departure point?
According to Thomas and Shore’s ‘Typhoon and Tempest Story’ none were lost on that date – the nearest non-squadron match is DN251 0f 5 Ferry Pilot Pool (ATA) which crashed in bad vis near Banbury, killing F/C W. Mason on Nov 21st, which would be the same day of the week.
