Your picture shows the one time Staverton gate guard T.7 WL349. It was camouflaged and the remnants of that colour is visible on the canopy. The other T.7 in store here is WF784 (see my photo of ‘784 here to compare).

See this thread in which I included one of my photos of the Goodyear airship when it was in the UK in the early 1970s.

I concur with David – I photographed the (static) machine when at Coventry. I understand that for a while it may have been stored at Barton before ending up reinvented as a Sopwith as per DB’s message.

    Hi folks,

Consul, thank you. I’m not interested in making personal attacks, hence I made general remarks, as a call to arms. You chose to see that as a slight on you (not intended). ……. I appreciate your lobbying efforts, and I hope others will take your post as an inspiration.

    Thank you for your time.

    James,

Thanks for your latter comment above. I only responded the way I did because you shifted from general comments to asking a specific question of me and I gave you a candid answer. A call to arms is indeed valid and I support that. Hopefully we can see eye-to-eye now without any misinterpretation.

    Regards,
    Tim

It’s a repeat – it was on a little while back. I think the programme was about Mrs Beaton’s cookery book and depicted a large number of folk having having an el fresco meal at Woburn eating dishes created from the old fashioned recipes. It looked to me as if they had cut together footage of this special event with some taken at the Moth Rally. The owner of ‘AWO was a guest and some air-to-air footage showed that machine. Can’t recall the precise title but I seem to recall it had Picnic in there somewhere.

……….I’m not demanding anyone state their efforts, but perhaps Consul might like to make their contribution known – in this specific case? …………..

We don’t all wish to advertise our activities but I can assure you I have lobbied RAFM officialdom. I have been involved in aircraft preservation for over 30 years. Unfortunately, in the last year I’ve suffered two bereavements and serious family illness. This sadly limits the time I can presently devote to the cause. No doubt you regard this as irrelevant but I do presently have other responsibilities / priorities! This doesn’t debar me from contributing facts and opinion to the forum in the meantime. It is disappointing that this can’t be done without folk personalising issues and making sweeping generalisations about other’s efforts. Perhaps we can focus on the aircraft?

The BA collection had regular upkeep from the company prior to 9/11 but consequent adverse economic impacts on revenues of all airlines resulted in a need to limit outgoings. I gather one consequence of this was that engineering support from BA for the collection’s upkeep had to be reduced to an ad hoc basis.

The hard working and dedicated RAFM restoration team already have a heavy load upkeeping the RAFM collection (at various sites) and it seems there isn’t scope to absorb an extra burden upkeeping BA items.

The Comet and Britannia belong to the museum and it is rumoured that the former at least has a long term future. The others airliners are BA’s.

No doubt we’ll have to wait and see what any review results in. It would be sad to see the Viscount, Brit or VC-10 lost. Indeed, I don’t think there’s another 707 preserved in the UK is there? If they’re in jeopardy hopefully some could be found alternative homes – though cost and logistics seem daunting. I agree with Albert that, since they don’t currently have a specimen perhaps the Viscount deserves consideration by the Science Museum as an icon of technological innovation, being the first truly successful commercial turbo-propliner?

    Consul,
Great photos there. It almost brings a tear to my eye to see the Lvg sitting there like that. Im sure many of us have many memories of it flying.
Is there anywhere else out there where you can see one fly?

Nope – that was the only one still flying. There is another static in Brussels.

I thought you might be interested in some photos I took yesterday in the Restoration Centre where some of the aircraft present are being readied for the new building + some pictures of the Valiant now it’s assembled. The photos of the Farman, LVG, Dolphin and Hampden are just to give a flavour of the variety and excellent longer term work in progress, as those are of course not destined for the Cold War building!

Unless it’s moved on recently, it’s stored at Lochearnhead near Crief in Scotland. One of my photographs of it there was published in a prior edition of Wrecks & Relics (was it 18th Edition – haven’t got it handy at this moment). When I photographed it there it was beached not far from the seaplane harbour that’s used regularly by Cubs and Cessnas on floats. I had the landowner’s permission to access the site …the problem was that to get to the aircraft I had to cross a field of cattle in which on one side were cows whilst on the other side was a rather large bull – I had to walk between them. Rarely have I felt so vulnerable and intimidated as during that lonely walk. The things we have to do in the interests of aviation!

The Q6 is of interest. Give me the owners details please.

Another possibility is a Nieuport 28. Wouldn’t that be cool?! A howling banshee of a thing. If we can find an engine we could be on for it.

    I’ll PM you.

Hairy, did you give any thought to Consul’s suggestion of finding out the status quo (no they did know more than 3 chords, unlike me) of the Q6. While we all love the Rapide they are quite well represented in the flying fleet whereas the Q6 is not represented. There is a tenuous link with Bedfordshire as they were built at Luton and you could take all your chums with you when your fleet goes on tour.

Thanks for your support of my suggestion about the Q.6 – I was quite serious and I thought, looking at subsequent posts, that it might get lost amongst all the space devoted to the discord that surfaced between two posters!
