Seems a bit odd, emergency landings happened at many bases and were not hushed up even for small aircraft. I have raised landing fees on several unexpected vistors and the arrivals were officially logged. It is fairly easy to isolate an arrival and keep the crew/pax away from restricted areas. The procedure was part of regular exercise drills.
Thats how I remember it, what was the codename??
Rogue elephant ?

Not sure an RAF Officer would rant about nukes during the cold war, especially to civil parties, it was pretty much a taboo subject. It has not been mentioned in this thread before your post, unless you read it somewhere else, James?
I found several sources of weapons removal, here’s just one of them:

bear with it, it seems to be easier to click on my links than navigate from page to page.

Something for the Spitfire collector
I would guess that sometime in the near future that some of this debris will have to be removed (or gathered together) for fear of a collision. This could be catastrophic if two items hit at several thousand miles an hour, rendering a large amount of space dangerous for years to come.

I know B-52s can operate out of Fairford…are Greenham Commons and Lakenheath’s runways long enough?

Never rely on Wiki, Yes the cruise missiles had famously arrived by then (think mid seventies), but nukes had been stored at GC from the mid 1950s for the resident SAC units with B-47 etc.
Sorry James, was being lazy
Yes the B47s (and I think the odd B58) were armed with nukes and the aformentioned nukes were stored at Greenham common, however, the period that nukes were stored here was from 1954 to 1st July 1964.
No nukes then until March 1976 for three months whilst Upper Heyford had its runway resurfaced and her F111s were temporarily based at Greenham.
Then nothing until the cruise missiles arrived November 1983.
So apart from the 76 detachment no nukes between 1964 to 1983.

Sounds like Nashio testing his new go-kart.

Just about what I thought.
There are RAF liaison officers on USAF/RAF bases at S/L level (spoke to one today) but no nominal Station Commanders and no Group Captains.
At Greenham Common I believe they drafted in British military and Police during 1980 to counter the lesb….protesters to save any embarrasment to our American cousins. The USAF still protected the Nukes but they were seldom seen as most of the action was at the outer fence.

I might somehow be misunderstanding this post Baz, but this was fairly and squarly within the nuclear period of Greenham Common, which was an RAF Base with a Station Commander.
No James
Incident with B707 early 70s, Nukes arrived 1980

Two old blokes banging on my door, flogging religion.
What part of “No thankyou” (repeated several times) did they not get??
They finally asked “have you had a bad Christian experience?”
my reply:
“Two old blokes banging on my door, flogging religion.”
