    Hi Peter,

Once the HDU is installed the circuit for the HDU lights will be complete and so they will work again. The lights are controlled by the main HDU control panel by the AEO’s station.

You are more than welcome to come and see her in action, our next taxi run is on the 5th of April!

As promised here are some photos of the last years activities!

Replacing the rubber stips on the underwing tanks. This was a long and very boring process with 100 2 ba bolts on each strip. Templates were then made out of new rubber and the panels put on.

Ah, the hidden corrosion! Yeah we fixed that a short while ago, took a bit of getting to but it has been removed and the area treated with the wonderful ACF50 anti corrosion stuff (which is fantastic stuff!) and then reprimed and painted.

Peter, if the RAF give us the call we will go! They would have to pay for the small matter of recertifying her however 😉

    Thanks for your comments

    Hi Peter,

Steve is right, we had some security issues with people hacking into the website and spamming from it, so we had to close it down. There will be a new website at some point but I am “entombed” at the RAF College Cranwell at the moment on my officer training course so it probably won’t be up for a while. What I will do however is start a thread on this forum keeping everyone up to date on the work we have done over the last few months and keep a work diary on the forum.

Nice to have people taking an intrest in something that isnt a delta shape for once!

    Hi Guys,

Sorry for the late reply, I havent had access to a computer for a while so here is the update!

We have had a problem with people hacking into the site and sending out spam emails asking for credit card details. This is obviously a serious issue, so it wwas decided to take the site offline until those problems were sorted. Unfortunatly, the friendly website guy who does the site for us has recently moved to new zealand and his internet line is still being set up, so it may be a few weeks until the site is back up and running. We are also restyling it while it is offline.

All is well with the Jet however and we have finally fixed a long standing problem that i will update the website with as soon as it is up again!

    Cheers

    Hi all,

It is indeed a victor sim at elvington and it was being brought up to a standard so that for a small charge people could come and “fly” it operationally, and it did fly! Everything was coming on nicely, however, this will probably not happen now as the musuem decided that the power useage was too excesive, (415V 3phase supply, so quite large power bills!) and so have turned it off.

Whether or not it will be restored to work again, i do not know as after it was switched off i transferred to the real victor.

    Hope this helps,

    Ollie

    Hi Chris

Unfortunatly we do want a working unit in order to stick with our philosophy of everything working as it should, we don’t like having things on the jet not working!

Will keep on the lookout and will keep that site in mind if there is nowhere else!

    Thanks for your help

Thanks for the info, a bit expensive however!

I think this is the problem, the price. It is overpriced everywhere the last place we tried had all the kit, but wanted £10000 for it. We cant afford £100 let alone £10000! Its an awful lot of money for equipment that is not used anymore and has been shut down!

The alloy wheels cleaner we use is……i don’t have a clue! The boss (Andre Tempest) gets it from his motor trading wholesalers as he uses it on a day to day basis in his garage, it just comes in a plain squirty bottle with alloy wheel cleaner on!

For proper corrosion treatment use ACF-50. It may be expensive, but by heck it works. We had a corroded periscope mounting with fluffy stuff all over it, bits of it were fairly deep too. One coat of ACF and the next day it had all gone, leaving a finish that was like new.. now thats a product and a half!

    Plazz,

That would explain it then! Its such a shame when people, and indeed the RAF during the decommissioning process, or just by pure vandalism decide to chop through wiring.

On lindy we had that problem with the Omega Navigation System, a loom about 50 wires thich chopped just before the plug. Alot of hard work goes into rewiring! Fortunatly a lot of the other systems like the Radar, HF radio etc were left intact and other systems just had the boxes nicked. Luckily we managed to scrounge/scrape/borrow all of the taken boxes back.

Probably a wise idea not to reactiviate the radar, we still run ours, but only when there is nobody else on the museum site, for obvious reasons!

Will pop over and say hi next time we are down,

Thats good news Plazz we were down at bruntingthorpe for the open day and were watching you when you were trying to light up the negines, i recall one went and the other one wouldnt. I assume you got the problem sorted?

I notice that the Artifical Horizon was not erect, are the flight instruments next on the list?

Again brilliant to see her moving again and she looks fantastic

    Hi,

Just to fill you all in on what happened, stops rumour control going into overdrive!

We have had for a month or so spurious fire warnings for number 4 engine, even with the engines off. This is caused by damp getting onto the firewire and causing it to signal as there being a fire. When this came on in the cockpit we knew it would be a false warning however decided to get it checked out, just to be sure. Thus followed a fairly slow run back as we are not in the business of risking, our safety or that of the public, and of course, the aircraft!

We believe the fault was caused by the heavy downpours on sat after the run and throughout the night.

Typically though, a few hours later when we put ground power on to move fuel around and check everything out, the warning had gone!

Sorry for those that were dissapointed on the sunday, hopefully we will have better luck next year!

Better safe than sorry every time!

    Ollie
