Its likely that they didn’t read the inscription on the memorial, but simply painted their name.
I don’t think it should be taken as a message about war veterans, or a disregard for their sacrifice.
Vandalism is not political, its vandalism!
In my (although somewhat limited) expirence with aircraft skin and salt water, I would guess that nothing could be made airworthy.
However, it could possibly clean up nicely for display.
Actually, thinking about it,did the luftwaffe have any ‘carefree’ handling fighters,I believe even the 109 had an achilles heel in that some ‘Dummkopf’ π (Willi ?) designed it with independant slats (ie they operated singly if that wing got to the stall angle )…bad idea if you are flying on the limits/gun aiming.
On the Brit side the spit had no vices I am aware of (or at least up to the mk9/mk16,heavier marks poss not so nice to handle ) and I dont recall any vices on the hurricane.
The tiffie was heavy and also I think would ‘flick out’ if turned too tight.
Tempest 11 and fury I think were ok handling wise,Tempest V of course had the Napier abomination up front .
The Germans of course had superb engines and fuel injection while our guys had a disadvantage with carburettors – not forgetting Miss Shillings orifice (partial cure for neg ‘g’ fuel starvation) of course !!cheers baz
Originally i was joking about Kurt Tank, but your post made me think: should we make a WWII fighter design “mistakes” thread (Germany vs Britain)?
Often those “mistakes” were design compromises alΓ’ “If you want it to be really good at A, then the B performance will suffer slightly”.
No Defiant in Loch Ness Jeepman.
Just a series of Troll postings from Steve Carmichael Timson using Mark James, Ali Johnston et al to post false rumours.
How about we all back up possible sites with facts to support them on this thread to stop myths self generating.
Regards
Ross
Sounds like a good idea.
Even if there could be undocumented wrecks in other lakes, bringing focus to the documented ones sounds like a good start.
Mondariz.
Where was that photograph taken? Have you any idea?

German Reichstag building 1945.
Eurofighter Typhoon surely?! Was that taken at Waddo?
Is it not too big for a Typhoon?
Glad to hear it π
Whoosh. Only a bit of hyperbolism there, I’m not evil.
I find it incredible that with the theme of this thread, you would choose to label me as ‘tasteless’
I didn’t mean to call you tasteless, or evil, I just find the idea of controlled breeding quite disturbing, even as a joke.
It was not intended as a personal assault, even if I quoted your post. In forum postings, its often hard to differ between the posted idea and the “poster”.
I objected to the idea, not you π
Well at least we have two at ARC for you to get excited about, one flying and one slightly less so at present…:)
Now, if I could just come up with an acceptable colour scheme for the latter one…;)
I have been excited about them for quite some time π
Just of the top of my head, I seem to remember some lake Michigan wrecks. Unfortunatly they were USN aircraft and they don’t like people to recover them.
Besides that, you are right, there must be a good few wrecks resting in freshwater lakes, both in Europe and throughout the states.
The only answer is to search them. Didn’t the norwegians find a Halifax after hearing a local story and deciding to search for it?
I’ll find the link to the story above.
Although having done some evasion exercises, I can still only speculate how he must have felt in those days.
It was that kind of strong spirit and hard determination that saved your islands back then.
Still not supporting these acts of vandalism, but please have some perspective. Nobody was killed and the memorial will be cleaned.
QUOTES:
“… as you say, what has the world come to?”
“May I suggest removing the benches. These idiots would not be there if they did not have some where to sit while they drink ect.”
“Only one word “sick””
“This needs to be sorted out, really, It is getting out of hand. If someone is caught they should be jailed for 10 years. Give the Ba****** something to think about!”
“More’s to the point, what sort of zoob would spray his/her own name?”
Many zoobs spray their own name…….

Exactly. It shouldn’t take too much investigation by locals to find out who actually did this.
But one thing worries me about all this is that people see such acts of vandalism and then decry it in the vilest manner. For instance…..
From wcfcfan…. “You seriously must not have a brain if you decide doing this is a good idea.
Some people should be made to pass some exams and get a license before they are allowed to breed.”
From Peter…. “This needs to be sorted out, really, It is getting out of hand. If someone is caught they should be jailed for 10 years. Give the Ba****** something to think about!”
Hasn’t it occurred to you that they do these things precisely because they have NOTHING to think about? The world has moved on somewhat since most of us were kids, society, largely for worse, has moved on with it. Respect was instilled in us. That doesn’t happen anymore. Respect amongst the young now is largely earned by the criteria of how much you can drink, what you can steal, how many fights you’ve had. The reasons for this? Breakdowns in parental responsibility and communication? A general lethargy and apathy towards what would be accepted as the norms for society? A failure by Government/s to put into place measures by which acceptable standards of behaviour might be maintained? I don’t know the answers, but I know sitting behind a keyboard scowling isn’t going to improve the situation.
I think the most telling comment so far comes from 92fis…..
“Thought there would be trouble, as the two metal plates which the plaques are fixed to near the prop were bent quite badly one night before we had finished the memorial off.”
This comes from one who is involved in the erection of the Memorial. Trouble was expected, and now the Memorial will be cleaned and cleaned and repaired should it happen again. It’s that kind of dedication that makes the difference, not sitting safe behind our keyboards saying what we’d do if we ever caught the perpetrators, safe in the knowledge that WE never will.
The answer? Maybe it lies in education. Maybe it lies in placing more emphasis on the history of the last 100 years or so which has placed the world where it is today. Maybe the answer is in discarding the apologist’s approach to history and instead of, for example, vilifying the men of Bomber Command over Dresden and the American usage of the Atom Bomb, we actually taught people that it was actions such as those which mean a minority element have the opportunity to carry out such acts of vandalism virtually unpunished.
And to XH668, please, feel free to leave at the earliest opportunity. If the generation which fought the Second World War showed the same attitude as you have in the last post you made, it would have all been over by the end of 1940.

I applaure you my good man.
You seriously must not have a brain if you decide doing this is a good idea.
Some people should be made to pass some exams and get a license before they are allowed to breed.
Thats exactly the kind of ideas, those remembered at Watton were fighting.
Not defending the despicable act, just found the marked passage tasteless.
Sad news….
