    Thanks Peter

I think this much anticipated edition has been mentioned on the forum a while back.

I’ve already ordered mine form Amazon UK which is doing a deal where you can buy the special edition of BOB & A Bridge Too Far for a discount price:

    No probs Mark.

Just hope that ‘cuts and bruises’ were all that he sustained.

Lets us know the full details when you find out more.

    Mark,

According to the WIX Board, it happend at the Bluebonnet show in Burnet, TX.

The latest posts seem to suggest he got away lightly. Cuts and bruises apparently.

Lets hope that is the case.

    Cheers

    Hi m’ Lord

I have seen the Spit/109 scene in Land girls.

As for the different sound of the Packard on the Mustang, I guess it’s down to the design & build of the airframe and possibly the different exhaust’s that gives it a different sound to the Spitfire.

After all many Spitfires flying today have Packard 266 (US version of the 66) or even the 68 or 69’s which were the same or very similar to the V-1650-3/V-1650-7 that powered the P51B & D respectively, and they don’t sound like a P51!

Of course one thing you don’t get with the Spitfire with some P51’s is that lovely whistle from the gun ports, which makes it even more distinguishable! 🙂

    Cheers

    Go for it Bluenoser! 🙂

You never know if you’ll get a chance like that again!

Glad you’ve got some Warbirds in your neck of the woods. And the last airworthy B29 too!

It would be a shame if ‘FIFI’ was grounded but I guess a plane that is as rare & complex as the B29 takes that much more time, money and effort to keep operational.

Lets just hope it continues for a few more years yet though!

Well, living not far from the now sadly closed Dunsfold, I used to see plenty of Hunters, Hawks and of course Harriers on a regular basis. Growing up in the 80’s, I recall quite a lot of aerial activity would often see stuff flying between here and Farnborough.

Of course the BAE families days were a regular feature and it often meant that we’d have aircraft holding or over flying us. It was quite nice to see the BBMF fly over low or the Mosquito holding now and again!

Sadly over the years it got quieter and by the 90’s it was only really the Harrier that you’d see. But now it’s closed, it’s kind of strange not to here the sound of a high Performance jet making it’s way too, or from Dunsfold any more. 🙁

Also we were quite lucky to have the Grace Spitfire fly over on a regular basis when it was based a Goodwood and I also recall we had a couple of Doug Arnolds Spits over fly whilst moving from Biggin to Bournemouth in the early 90’s

    Those were the Days!

Well, as most have said here, there is little I think that can be improved upon at OW.

Having gone back for the first time in many years, the magic and timeless atmosphere was still present and it was a highly enjoyable day out.

Whilst I never tried the food, it looked to me as if people where enjoying it. To my suprise, there seemed to be no end of people eating what looked like a reasonably large portion of sausage, egg and chips and other “calorrific” food throughout the day!

I enjoyed looking around the shop again which seemed to be much the same as I remember it. It did get quite crowded at times, but then I seem to remember it always being that way!

I liked the guided photo tour by members of the SVAS. This was new to me. Just shows how long since I last visited! 😮

As for commentators, well, it’s just as well John Blake has retired IMHO! 😉 It’s not quite the same without Roger Hoffling (surely this guy was the voice of OW??) but I thought the chap (sorry forgotten his name) was quite good when I was there.

As far as the displays go, well it would be nice to have some types form outside of the collection as suggested already – maybe and appearance from OFMC, TFC etc. as in previous years but I think most people would agree that the displays are hard to fault.

Maybe after a few more visits this year I’ll have some more ideas.

    Cheers

    eddy,

I think you’ll find NH799 went to NZ.

Still, SA doesn’t seem to have had much luck with Spitfires in recent years. 🙁

I’ve just seen this post on the Planes of Fame forum by John Hinton:

Anyone have any info on these new ‘restrictions’?

Well as we’ve drifted off thread but it’s relevent…

Whilst talking to an American visitor at Legends on the Sunday, he said he was concerned with the height lost during the first Derry turn at the western end of the field and was surprised it didn’t go in then.

I was not aware of the exact routine of the Firefly at the time, but having since seen footage of it’s Display on the Biggin Hill DVD, I was surprised at the amount of height and energy that appeared to be lost during the Derry turns.

I read Eddy Kurdzeils account of flying his Firefly a while back and he says it fly’s much like an underpowered jet. Entry speeds are a clue to its performance – 350 knots for an upward roll according to him.

What fascinates me is how an experienced pilot can fly the same routine without incident in the same aircraft for a season or several seasons and then one day it goes horribly wrong. 🙁

Lets hope the 2004 season is a safe one.

Well maybe Mr Friedkin has bought it. 😉

If he has, then I suppose there is a chance that a P38 might grace the UK skies again, if only for a short period! :p

Sometimes I get the impression people think that Ray Hanna is cutting it fine or being reckless.

That is far from the case.

If you watch one of his displays in say MH434, then you’ll see that all he is doing is trading speed for height and height for speed. Basicaly good energy management!

I was watching a video of his opening display at the DX 1996 Spit show and it was quite breathtaking and heartstopping. Yet all he was doing was what I described above. I suppose that’s why he’s regarded as the master of the Spit display and a genius – making the simple look spectacular! 🙂

Of course his low flying is another thing he is renowned for and again it’s something that he is a master of.

    Just ask Alan Decadinet! 😀

    Cheers
