Incidentally, this model of the T20 is so docile, even I can fly it, is it that easy in real life? – I have the sim settings to “realistic”!

    Rob,

All of Paul Barry’s Sea Fury Flight Models were made using the Flight Dynamics Workbook, by far the best way to make FM’s for the FS/CFS series of sims.

The FM you make with it will be within 1% of the real aircrafts performance and it will handle like it too. Basically , the more accurate your data used to build the FM, the more accurate the FM will be! 😉

From all that I’ve read, these Sea Fury FM’s seem to reflect what pilots had to say about the real thing. Take Off can be a bit tricky if you aren’t careful (but that’s true of most of the taildragger warbirds!) but once you are in the air, the Sea Fury handles like a dream and goes like a rocket seemingly without any effort!

As for the landing, well it seems it was easy to on the real thing providing you kept an eye on your airspeed and it seems that this is the way it is in Flight Sim. 🙂

    Hope this helps.

Apologies for drifting away from the original discussion btw! 😮

    Cheers

On the subject of the BoB audio, I wonder if it was originally recorded in stereo?

It would be nice if this release had the soundtrack remixed to stereo.

Well if your Lottery numbers don’t come up n the near future, you can always purchase the HFL/Aeroplane Heaven FS2004 version of PV202 due out soon. 🙂

Not quite the same but almost as real as it gets.;)

And I suspect that there will be a few more of HFL’s Spits to grace the virtual world too. 😀

    Thanks Mark.

Heard it was on it’s way but at the time no details of what the extras would be.

You’re absolutely correct jbs it was the 88 Spit show at DX.

That pic was taken by Bradford senior from the top of a double decker bus!

As for PT462’s “unusual” scheme. Although I wasn’t too keen on it at the time, I must say I prefer it to the colours she has today. 😮

Well Chris after the cannon debate a while back I was going to ask this question but now there is no need. 🙂

And thanks to Bruce and Mark V for their answers.

I too would love to see 434 returned to her original 1943 condition. I seem to recall in the 434 thread that someone said that after Mark Hanna saw that Hornchurch pic, he said that he would make sure 434 was fitted with the non tropical filter and the other bits and pieces to return her to how she looked in the pic.

It would be nice if his wish could be carried out.

Another thing on differences between these marks of Spit that hasn’t come up yet is the early style ‘Flat’ and later ‘Bulged’ top Cowlings. Most restored machines have the latter even though they might of originally have had the ‘Flat’ version like 434.

I asked Peter R Arnold about these two types of cowlings and this is what he said:

“I have seen a written piece on these cowlings. I will try and find it.

I believe that Rolls Royce converted the first mk Vs to mk IX and clearly just extended the the V top cowling. This design was formalised for CBAF production. I would suggest that the change to the bulged top cowling came about as and when necessary as a ‘running mod’ to aid fitment, that is some way through mk IX and probably included all mk XVI.”

    Seems to make sense.

Does anyone have anything else to add on this subject?

    Cheers

    Sorry Ant.

The first link seems to have not included the last part of the URL. Just copy the whole lot and paste it into your browser it should be fine.

I’ve just tried the second link to the SimOuthouse. and it’s fine.

Both planes are not available yet but I believe the Spit will be out at some time prior or after PV202’s first flight.

I saw your post in the other thread about the missing animations in FS2002 not working. As you tried what I said I don’t know why you are having problems as it should work! You could try asking on the FS2002 forum at the SimOuthouse. Maybe someone knows the answer there.

As for the MH434 skin, I’ll sort something out later and either send it to you or upload it.

    Cheers

Thanks for the heads up Mark.

Looks like Mr Thompson and his team have done a cracking job on this one.

Looks great in that primer too!

One thing though, and you all probably going to want to kill me, but are the cannon barrels E type ones? They look a tad short to me for C wing ones. 😮

    Ant,

I think you’ll find if you go to the Multiplayer Settings menu in FS2002, there is a section called ‘Visual Details’ that lets you set whether you see the animations etc of other players aircraft and they see yours. If they are not checked with an ‘x’ then you won’t see the other planes animations and smoke.

As for FS2004 being worse than 2002. Well I’ve found it does a lot of things better and am pleased with it. But as Rob points out, to get the best out of it you do need a system with a lot of Ram, Fast CPU and one of the beefy, latest generation Graphics cards.

In think there is scope here for an FS2002/4 team and a IL2 FB one judging by the comments so far. One things for sure though, the FS series will allow us to fly in an accurate enviroment if you have the right addons. 😉

I’ve been thinking about this for a while myself now.

My choice would be FS2004 as it has improved a lot over FS2002 in terms of it’s visuals and the FM capabilites of it’s predocessor.

You could have any team you like! Modern Jet team or a Classic Jets from the 50’s or a Warbird formation team ala the Breitling Fighters. I volunteer myself for the latter. 😉

Using aircraft made with the Flight Dynamics Workbook and with Gary Summons excellent UK2000 Airport/Airfield scenery combined with the Visual Flight UK VFR photo scenery, you would have an envoiroment as realistic as possible in any sim available today. 🙂

I’ve always hoped that I’d meet someone when I’m flying online who want’s to do quick tailchase and some aero’s around Duxford but haven’t came across anybody yet.

I think with some careful organisation and planning, it would be a blast! 😀

    Ah, Bill Wainright.

    I do remember now!

    Thanks Airbedane.

    And so it’s Skillicorn.

I couldn’t remember the name exactly.

Now one question I’d like to ask, although not pilot related, is what ever happened to the commentator by the name of Roger & what was his surname?

I always remember him doing the shows in the 80’s and my dad said he was doing them in the 70’s as well! When did he stop doing shows at OW?

I have a few signatures of some of the collections pilots that were sent to my Grandad several years a go.

He found them while sorting some things out and gave them to me a few months back.

Can’t make them all out but these are the ones I can:

    Angus McVitie

    Bill Bowker

Brian Skillicom (or was it Skillihorn??)

    Tony Haig Thomas

    David Ogilvy

I think the one of the others is John Lewis’s and Bill somebody or other.

I can’t remember another pilot they had called Bill.

    Can anybody else?

I thought the DVD compared well to previous versions but I hoped it would have some bonus stuff like last years.

I’ll have to take a look next time and see if I can spot you Snapper!

Interesting point you make about pre existing contracts.

Maybe there was a deal that if anything happened, Sky News would get exclusive rights to it. They where there from the Thursday reporting about the show and the fact that Twilight Tear had returned to DX. Also they had interviews with the family of Hubert Davis as well if I recall correctly.

At the time I was pleased they previewed this unique show. Just a shame that events turned out the way they did. 🙁

I wish the full facts regarding the Firefly footage deal would come out.

    Damien,

I recall Steve Connor’s post here. I also remember reading your post about the complaint as well.

I’m not trying to defend Red Admiral but just add my opinions and thoughts on the reasons the footage might have been sold on to Sky News so soon after the crash.

I would be interesting to know if Sky News has been banned from setting foot at DX as well.

    I got mine from Steve.

Dez, I didn’t think the last paragraph was worded disrespectfully.

Whilst I don’t know the full details behind the Firefly crash footage story, I think Red Admiral did a good job with this years DVD despite all the flack they got.

Personally I thought they handled the Firefly accident in a respectful manner.

    Cheers
