    Firebird,

All the fire integrity mods have been done as well as the ‘extra’s’ that Thunder City do which along with there stringent checks makes them the most fuel tight Lightnings ever – belly tanks still leak like a sieve though!

    Kukri,

Sounds like a good postion you,ve got there! The flight will be on a Sunday when they are closed but access is pretty good to the general area anyway. The guys who answer the phone are the same guys who do the guided tours so they will probably give you the gen nearer the time, if you need the direct number then PM me and I will give it to you. If you get down there and see it please let us know.

Yeah thats what I thought but apparently just about everything is done apart from the fitting and it is just an engine fit not change – still pushing it though. If I get some time and can work out how to do it I’ll try and post a still from my camcorder pictures this week.

Anyone out there gonna bring me up to speed on the ‘alleged’ disposal of the Mossie, I’ve seen it several times implied that this aircraft has not been sold? Has it, hasn’t it, whats the story? I know I saw it road running on the A11 last year heading for Norwich but further to that …?

The late 80’s would have been about the time I saw an awsome display by a PR9 canberra ‘over’ my back garden! I lived in Bracknell then near the RAF Staff College, but with the exception of a yearly pass by the BBMF and the odd ‘eggbeater’ you never saw anything military, then one afternoon out of nowhere appeared this Canberra it did a full display and left. Apart from being a brillant display the most amazing thing was that as far as I know no one complained! The Staff College is completly surrounded by densely populated housing estates and althought I thought having a Canberra nosediving me straight above my house was fantastic I can’t believe a lot of the locals did, having said that though alot of them were watching. There was not even a slight mention of it in the local paper.

I wonder if that was the same year and crew as it’s the only time I’ve seen a PR9 display ever?

While it is true to say that the South African CAA have a more positive view to the maintenace side of operations and there catergorizing of the Lightning as ‘design stable’ to compare the whole situation directly to the one in the UK is a little unfair. If South Africa was as heavily populated as the UK then the Lightnings would not be allowed to fly there either.

I think we will see the Mig-17 fly in this country and I for one look forward to seeing it fly!

My favourite book of fiction like Septic is ‘Thunder and Lightnings’ by Jan Mark. I first discovered this book in the library at junior school by which time I was already hooked on Lightnings. Although this book is designed for teenage readers its defiantly worth a read if you haven’t read it. The story is of two teenage boys growing up in Norfolk, one with a real passion for avaition and especially Lightnings! They take regular cycle trips to Coltishall to see them until one day they find out the Lightnings are to be replaced by Jaguars!
In terms of non fiction anything related to classic jets that has histories and flying stories in it I like and books like ‘ I learn’t about flying from that’.

We can all dream about finding something in a scrapyard! These aircraft always look available even if some of them arn’t. I’ve always found looking at scrapyard and dump pictures fascinating and I love the way things just turn up years sometimes after they were last heard of.

I can’t believe Thunder City makes a profit, even with all the test pilot activity.

    Glen,

I have no evidence to back this up but I was under the impression that the CAA would not allow these aircraft to fly in the UK, due to them being on a SA-CAA permit to fly rather than a genral C of A. I believe the aircraft would need permission in writting from the CAA.

    XR728,

The Shackelton is not allowed to fly in this country as Bae have written to the CAA informing them that the aircraft is out of fatigue life. I understand that with the Lightning the first stumbling block is the engine layout and its associated pipework. A fuel leak in this area will almost certainly result in the loss of the aircraft as all the area’s are hot! Although during its service life losses were greatly reduced due to stringent servicing and checks the problem was never really resolved. I understand that as a result the CAA consider it’s design unsuitable for certification. The Lightning is my favourite aircraft but I don’t think we’ll see one fly over here again 🙁

Ah, this brings back memories. My first airshow was also Blackbushe 1977. In those days I lived in Bracknell ( not to be advised!) and my parents would take us over to Blackbushe to see all the aircraft. I think that was the airshow where a Ju52 loaded with parachutests took several attempts to get airbourne. Does anyone have a list of all the participants that day? My earliest ever memory was of going to LHR to see the first commercial flight of Concorde. Thankfully my parents have always been interested in avaition and used to go on dates to LHR in the sixties!
