    Yep Kev, you are a sentimental old fool. And quite possibly the only sentimental old fool who has visited the chaps grave in memory. Which makes you a bloody good sentimental old fool. And I know exactly what you mean, as I felt the same after seeking and finding Mr Moxey the other week. Thanks to Moggy reading some post on local newspaper forum, first one log-dead flyer, then his whole crew, have been remembered, thought about, and acknowledged.

    (Edited to add, how about doing an article for the local press? Perhaps someone will remember him and contact you, but I’m sure you can get enough info to make something worthwhile, and spread the memory further.)

    Air-Britain T1000-V9999 states that Hurricane I V7166 served with 260 Squadron, MSFU, and then 609 Squadron. To 5034M on 17th february 1945.

    Air Britain lists this as
    No.260 Sqn, MSFU, No.609 Sqn. Became 5034M on 17/02/45. The Form 78 will give you the date transferred from MSFU to No.609 Sqn.

    Charles Demoulin mentions it being the first a/c used when arriving on the sqn, for sector recco’s. Pinkie’s log ties with this, and the codes PR/- are also listed earlier in his log. Joe Atkinson took it up whilst acting station commander at Duxford one time too, during a raid. It was apparently kept fuelled and armed.

    No, it’s almost definately not a 609 Sqdn Tiffy. Its in the Typhoon and Tempest at War, and the reprinted Mosquito including one too. As a double page, and a few pages earlier, in smaller form. I would guess at it being a factory shot.

    Looking closely at the Waaf now, is it Ashley?

    It would be in The Great Yarmouth Mercury, and Eastern Daily Press, if anthing was written up locally. Perhaps his name will be on a church memorial in Gorleston (its only a small town). The memorial cross in the cemetery has no names on it. Gorleston Library has, probably, a records office bit – certainly Norwich has, and Lowestoft (where I live) may have something in theirs. (Gorleston is not really that far from Ludham by the way – did you mention visiting it or something?) I don’t know any historical societies addresses / phone numbers, but the local libraries would know them.

    Question Moggy – what was the interest of the original enquirer?

    Kev – who is Doris, an Ashley equivalent that you are keeping to yourself you swine? LOL. (Incidentally, I would appreciate any bits you can come up with re: Johnny Wiseman, that I don’t have already.)

    Lets stick to March 2nd, 3rd for those who want to stay over, then.

    Anyone know a cheap place in London? A mate runs a hotel at Shepperton, but its pricey. All hotels are pricey for me. Thats why I holiday in Third / developing world countries. £2 a night is fine for my crooked old bones.
