Isn’t it time Manchester got a second runway?? It is beyond me how such a busy airport can operate with only one. They should do what Gatwick did, use a taxiway (or lay one) and widen and certify it for emergency use only. It won’t be long before that goes out the window and it becomes a second runway.
I remember a time when Miami was the Mecca for DC3/DC4/DC6 and other classic pistons, often from the Americas. The 727 was a mainstay fleet type. Now the rarity is the three-holder itself.
OMG I feel old!
This picture is clearly a model held up by thin string. If you look closely you may see the string. The aircraft looks too surreal against the buildings! Nice livery it has. 🙂
Nice Photos (: is the Malaysian 747 on airliners.net ?
Joe
I suspect there are lots of pictures of it on that site. 🙂
VeeOne can you please stop posting all these images from the 80’s 😀 especially the ones from Gatwick.
seriously i am in danger of getting nostalgia overload here!!:)Many thanks for posting all of them they bring back a lot of memories. i’ll take old B747’s and DC-10’s et al over any of this modern twin engined 7*7,Airbus lookylikey things
Me too, Stangman!
I was going to post some DC-10 photos next and I noticed when sorting them out there were nice BCAL ones, including BCAL Charter and also a Korean AL DC-10.
Here is a quick pic for you showing the wide-body Gatwick at its best (not the weather though!).
In the picture surrounding the Clipper Tristar is a Wardair DC-10, Air Florida DC-10, Braniff 747, BCAL DC-10s, Northwest Orient 747s, Philippines 747 and the Laker Airways DC-10s. Also is the Dan-Air Comet (training) and some Air UK Heralds.
They never flew to Heathrow. I think they might have operated a VC-10 into Gatwick at times. This was at Heathrow 1983 and I believe it was a leased in aircraft. Why it was at Heathrow I don’t know but it might have been some VIP visit maybe?
Indeed it is, and I’m not even going to get into numbers:D
Sarah, having had an afternoon turn out in my ‘den’ I’ve actually got that Trident poster, as well as a similar one for a BEA Comet 4B. I hadn’t looked at them for ages. They are definitely products of their time.
I saw that poster on eBay a couple of months ago. It sold for a reasonable price. I have only seen the photo of the poster but it looks pretty detailed. The BEA Comet poster I had never heard of before. I wonder if they did one for the Vanguard? 🙂
According to Mayan prophecies the next one is scheduled for December 21st, 2012 at 22:18:13 (they really got the prediction down to the second).
Their ancestor tribes have refuted this date.
Well it is past the doomsday time and we are all still here. It looks like we are going to have to do it ourselves, as usual. So lets get the nukes out then…

Nice one, I love the Old Pan Am livery, I read that the Pan Am globe emblem was the second most recognised iconic image, the Coca Cola emblem being the first.
Love the 747SP’s do any SP’s (from any other airline) still come into the UK any more?
Hi Runway06
It wouldn’t surprise me if Iranair are still using their aging 747-SP jets.
I think you are right about the PanAm globe. I have even seen it on t-shirts on eBay!
Why is it that old photographs of aircraft seem to convey the action better? Modern photography is astonishing, but I think it’s the nostalgia that make these photos seem more real. May have answered my own question.
Great post VeeOne, I like the intro. Brilliant.
Thankyou sir!
There does seem to be a difference between 35mm film and modern digital images. It seems to me this is a similar difference to that of old records and their digital CD versions.
I found taking airliner photos difficult to get the exposure correct. The tops were usually white and I underexposed by 1/2 a stop for this. But there were times the photos were still either slightly too bright or too dark. Slides had almost no latitude for error and you had to wait until the film was processed to find if you’d missed a great picture. I ended up developing my own slide film so i could see the results more quickly and have some control over them.
Modern digital cameras are great despite the ‘digital’ effect of freezing the aeroplane in mid-air. No cost or waiting and immediately we can see the result. The people who are using dSLRs are getting amazing results.
I still have an unmade Airfix Bristol Superfreighter and a Frog Dragon Rapide. Perhaps it’s time I made them?
Or put them on eBay and made some money!

Hi VeeOne..Thanks for a very in depth explanation and your 2 photos showing things in and out of focus with relativity to what is viewed in the depth of field at the time.As to what the object might be in the second photo can be anyone’s guess but I will agree with you that there are things about that clearly(forgive the pun)do not come across as crystal clear when they have been photographed and this has been the playground for the the rule of ridicule.:)
Anyway your points of view are very interesting and it has been something different to talk about aside from the normal aircraft topics.Apologies to the site staff for the thread having wandered off course somewhat and thanks for moving it.Getting back to things more recognisable your look back to the past photos have been a treat veeOne..cheers..john.b:)
My pleasure, john. Keep checking your photos! 🙂
