I may regret asking this but…
What’s the device on the front of the tractor? It seems to have a drive off the transmission, where the belt pulley usually is. Is it a crane for loading up the bomb trolleys?
Adrian
(feel free to get the mods hoof this to another thread if it looks as though it will distract from the main thread)
Looking at it Adrian I would say that there is a small donkey engine fitted there to enable the tractor to be started. You can start a Fordson like that by spinning the pulley and with all the stuff on the front end you sure as hell wouldn’t be able to swing her, furthermore you can’t tow start them as the final drive is worm and wheel. No doubt someone may correct me,but that’s my logic about it.:)
Just a thought, will Martin Phillips fly it himself eventualy?
Fantastic, made me feel all edgey whatching it,I wouldn’t have that sort of nerve.
I don’t know about his ‘dodgy ticker’, but a pal who was there said that JM flew right into a TS. That’s a fact, I don’t think that there was any evidence that Jacks health was to blame. A very sad end to an all-round heroic effort.
I had heard this too.It was the first I’d heard of a ticker problem on this thread.
Ok thanks for the reply Dave, shame really because I’m sure lots of people would like to read the story.
Coincidentley we recently got his story sent to us at the Classic Wings office with a load of detail and photos which I have yet to study. A future article there no doubt, although the ending puts me off a little 🙁
Dave
Did it ever get published Dave?
Thank you for the update Martin, much appreciated.
Interesting! I remember the XVI in a decidedly dodgy green brown glossy camouflage.
Yes that is right,I can remember it that way too.I believe that Doug Arnold ended up with it afterwards, through an exchange deal or something. The Mk5 went from Credenhill to be an extra in the “Battle of Britain” film in about 1966/67 and did not return, that’s how they ended up with the Mk16.
Sopwith has actually jogged my memory as the Upper Hill Spitfire may have been my first, when what became Sheppards was still the Spitfire public house. I think the Spitfire concerned was last heard of in Belgium becoming a high back.
Was the Spitfire at Credenhill a Mk V? I thought it was a TE series Mark XVI.
Yes the original one back in the 60’s at Credenhill was a Mk5,the later Mk16 was 70’s/80’s.
First real one that I saw was a mark 5 at RAF Credenhill,Hereford then the mark 16 at Sheppards, Upperhill near Leominster.First one sat in was MK356 at RAF St Athan.
Thanks Martin re your post 25,in answer to my question.
The Jodel, if you see it as a D.117, may be G-AVVM, which I saw at ST, 7/8/69.
G-APOL was a home-build, emerging at Biggin in 1960.
Thanks Alertken re Jodel D117.
They all look pretty pricey to me.
Begs the question now,is Bill Francis still with us and what year would that photo of him have been taken?
Ok, thanks anyway Howard
