Kennith please sen some of those Swiss Ju52’s to the UK as they are yet to be seen here?! I beleive after its capture in Olso ‘FAP was taken over by Lufthansa rather tha the Luftwaffre because of its passenger interior. After that who knows?
Brings back memories of those CASA 352’s I saw as a kid flying round Blackbushe!
I would guess the Hind was taken at an Empire Air Day in tha late 30’s. Looks like it might be Old Sarum to me?? But there were plenty of stations with Belfast Truss hangars at the time?
I remember these well with Aerofab. There also had a number of ex Moazambique/Portugese Harvards in 1990. Diging back through the log books…
Thruxton 6/1/90
Seafire PP972,Spitfires BR601,TE392
Harvards
1780/BSBC,1788/BSBB,1681/BSBD,1730/BSBE,
1736/BSBF/1753/BGBG
I remember the engineers saying that TE392 was being converted from a low back(bubble canopy) to a high back. Also all they really needed to create a spit was a con plate! The fist place that made me thought that most flyable Spits are really modern replicas(conterversial!!)!.
Personally I would rather hear a Merlin that what ever engines these RV6/Europa/Long Eze have? As for homebuilts my interest dissapeared when the above became prevelant. You could see the workmanship in a Taylor mono/Isacs Fury/Luton Minor these new kitplanes all look the same.
From year to year FL varies very little . Personally if they parked the interesting visitors( German ex SAAF Harvards, Swiss P2/3’s, Norweigan DC3) crowd side I would go to FL every time. The PFA had the Ok- Morava and LY- An2 this year plus loads of Yaks and it wins over FL every time for sheer numbers.
Personally I do not go to airshows. I went to RIAT this year(first since 1998) and that was it. I go to flyins because I love vintage British aircraft. I go to every Popham event becuase I love the atmosphere. If I go to an event and if any aircraft is miles away I get annoyed.
I did try a few years ago to get limited genuine enthusiast access to the visiting flightline at Duxford. This wold have been between the last visiting aircraft landing and the start of the flying. Sadlly the HSE has taken care of that.
A spotter always has diffrent requirements that the avid warbird/miljets person. I loved Biggin Hill in the late 70’s/early 80’s. All the visiting aircraft crowd side and the hangars open. Sadly this has gone and I will not return to Biggin.
My perfect airshow? Somewhere like Hurn or Southend. All hangars open, a 200+ flyin in the morning with full access. A flying display 12 til 5 with lots of aircraft doing flybys only so I have to stay to get the regs!!!
The funny thing this year was there were almost as many foreign ‘homebuilts’ at Fowleme for Duxford as there were at the PFA. Including such delights as Belgian Minimax and Shadow!
It is very true that without spotters the PFA rally would make a massive loss. I would guess that about 60% of visitors by road are spotters.
Surely its advantagious to both to coperate and have the events of diffrent weekends. I thought this year was a one off as an event had allready been booked for Kemble the weekend before. Sadly it means many of us don’t get to enjoy both events fully. Personally I would choose the PFA over Duxford, as I am only really interested in the visitors at Duxford.
It does not seem a massive increase in area that I first imaganed. I would perfer to see the RE8 on the deck. Its not a massive aircraft but as rare as they get, surely somewhere on the ground could be found? What about the Hermes it seems neither inside or outside! Are they just not sure if it will get under the doors?
I did see one in the brick ‘shed’ behind the Hastings at Duxford in October. That place always seems to be the tempoary home of anything awaiting collection or departure?
Tell me about it! As a spotter doing both its a pain. PFA on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday I have to do Fowlmere and Cambridge before going to Duxford, a very long weekend!
It was a US registered TBM700, they all got out ok but the aircraft is a write off. I think it just didn’t stop in time?
The AEW3 was a good airframe with bad radar/systems. I would rather seen on the ‘Comrods’ (Comet airframe Nimrod systems) that were at Farnborough and Wodford preserved. But they faded away in the early 90’s.
I went up to LHR today on about 3 mile final and it was a awsome sight. I hope to get up to LHR for a takeoff on one of the ‘delivery’ flights, its much more impressive on a take off.
I also want to go to Filton on the 17th providing it the the last ever flight? Will there be a proper pubic reception for it? It would be nice to have BBDG outside too for its arrival. Anybody have any info on Filton?
The Vimy is the original Alcock & Brown Atlantic crosser. It was rebuilt after its crash landing in Ireland in 1919 and presented to the museum in the early 20’s. It only has a BAPC number as it flew too early to merit a civil registration.
Nice to see the SE5a in a civil scheme, what a sight those sky writers must have been in their day? NIce for a trip up to the museum have not been since school trips in the 80’s.
I love Duxford as it is, it feels ‘living’, apart from the AAM. Hendon and Yeovilton do not have this feel. Duxford feels like an active airfield with aircraft just waiting to be draged out and flown. I would perfer the minium of clutter around aircraft. Long may this continue.
As for ‘hands on’ why not get hold of a few cockpit sections, there are plenty about and have them open for inspection. Although the old ‘health and safety’ might object to actually sitting in something.
I feel a photo day is a must. Bring out the Lanc,Sunderland, Concorde etc into the open air for a weekend and hope that the sun shines.
What is also needed is a non airframe exhibition area to display uniforms, medals etc.
Is the 17th Nov the definitive last flight? Will have to go to Filton if so. I am dissapointed that some flybys at Filton,Fairford and Farnborough could not have been done after all the development was done there?
The airport in Barbados is a ****hole, and has no hangar even remotely big enough to house Conc. Apparantly a hotel owner offered a silly amount for one. There are no preserved aircraft on the island but no scrappies either. It will end up delipated and forgotten in 10 years.
It took me long enough to sort out the flights, was going to go in August. The problem seemed to be late flights back on Sunday’s as they are always near full. Just need them to include Frankfurt next time!
