    this one i saw (partially)…
in 1979, Fuerza Aerea del Peru, was practicing regularly massive air attacs, involving anything that could fly, including the M-5’s, A-37-B, Canberras and the bright spanking new (at the time) Fitters (Su-22) with the diference that they were really loaded with live amo, and they were not told about the exercise until they were on route to real targets, so…ok boys, come back home.
one Fitter-G (2 seatters) low on fuel (dont know why) wouldnt make it to its base up north, so very “smart” pilot, decided to divert to Las Palmas airbase at Lima (near my old neighbourhood), BUT Lima was going thru the crappiest weather ever, really low clouds 8 oktas, fog etc. the typical early morning of any coastal city (you cant see your nose) so radar approach was provided and my old man and i were at the airborne base just divided from the airbase by an old broken wall.
we heard the “suko” arrive, (you can clearly tell by the sound) and shorthy after… 😮 Big Badda BOOOM!!! (the sound was clear, massive metal scratching, engine reving up 2 ejector seats flying up, followed by more heavy metal scratching and BOOOM, we all run to the broken wall (the runway was on the other side) and there we saw what was left of a Fitter E envolved in flames, the 2 guys were picked up REALLY SHORTLY after by a pair of choppers, whom appeared out of nowhere, the poor Suko kept burning and exploding like hell 😮 , firefighters couldnt approach, then when everything appeared calm….BOOOM again, bombs, bullets, starting the fireworks again, (they’ve tried to approach the wreckeage several times) so “hell, pull back again, and again, so they’ve just let it burn to the end. i was 17 years old, left out shocked and amazed, never seen fireworks like that again (but i still love to fly 😀 )
in 1988 (9 years latter) talking with a retired Su-22 pilot, i’ve learned the cause of the accident…
the “smart pilot” forgot to set his wings for low speed, so he entered from downwind to base to final with the wings set for cruise (kinda half way) and the suko stalled and crash into the runway.
the 2 pilots ejected safely but the man in question i was told, ended flying helos and i dont think got ever promoted again.
    at least they’ve survived 😉
but my poor little suko didnt. 😡

i totally agree with you garry, to me it has to be a combo, Su-3X with Su-25 or Mig-29SMT with Su-25, it would be perfect, and the Tucano for COIN, i dont see a need for more, in the peruvian case, i think the second option would be perfect, but with the techno required for mayor overhauls etc, i just hope negociations finish well.

    sad looking???
i saw 5 already cut down in pieces (air transat) 🙁 😡 😮
and everytime my eyes cried like a river, it felt like i was the one being cut,
and hurt even more, remembering the old happy times when i was flying it, being its flight engineer was the coolest, happiest times in my life, and still the last one will be scrapped in late august (TSZ)
a sad end for the greatest airliner of all times 🙁

    one question

one article says that the APG-77 will acquire an enemy aircraft at “up to 220kms” distance, not specifying fighter size or bomber size.
some people “CLAIM” very loud that the APG-68V9 (F-16 block 50) can acquire an enemy “fighter” at 250kms,
so it would seem that the apg-77 is going backwards? or (most likely) the guys doing the claim on the apg-68V9 are smocking cheap weed?
what are the real numbers? this is burning in my mind for a while 😀
please my “voodoo magicians” illuminate my mind 😀

    good point garry 😉
but to me a reason a little heavier than the engine one, wich by the way is 100% valid, is the “multirole” combat aircraft, all the variants of the legendary Su-27 and so on and on, “one single” type, “twin engined” that does “everything”.
we all know that war is another “business” and economics are as important as the weapons.

I don’t know about now, but I’ve read that there were several small scale clashes between them and Eritrea (sp) over some small islands between the sea. (wachenroder)
that would justify the yemeni adquidition, another thing to consider is that the SMT’s from the surplus fulcrums at mikoyan would make the price somewhat affordable for such an economy.
the ball will now be on yemeni side, will they know how to play the game? i mean pilot training and above all…technicians training? ain’t no more “use a bigger hammer” now they need a different kind of tech-men.
    only time will tell. 🙂

when they just received their first Mi-8 helos, somebody ask why not the blackhawk instead?
    the answer was…
because with the price of 1 blackhawk i can buy 12 Mi-8’s… 😮
so it is also true in peru, colombia, ecuador and few others in the region.
i did ride on those before and it was way cool 😎

the MiG-29 having low sortie rates and are reaching the end of their operational life (wachenroder)
good point, but the belorusian examples are reaching their TBO, not the end of their lives, the contract being negociated (for years now) are supposed not only to do this but to upgrade them at the same time (to SMT? we dont know).

All those people were linked with Torres Montesinos, who had signed a contract with Rosvooruzheniye for the purchase of three MiG-29 aircraft worth $117 million in 1998 on behalf of the Peruvian Government. Former KGB general and former Rosvooruzheniye CEO Ananyev acted as Montesinos’ partner. (steve)
that is correct steve, and more, mr. montesinos is under arrest for about 4 years now, his involvment in dirty affairs is well known, only new crap is being discovered as the time goes by, the only thing that ****es me off is that he’s arrested, but at a naval base, why? we suspect he knows some dirty things about the present government as well and that’s why he is not at the normal prission being gangraped as he deserves 😡 (that’s a shame for all peruvians including yours trully).

another thing to think, is that the logical explanation for the low rates on the migs are exactly that, the approach to the TBO, without nothing concrete negociated about them, this make sense, seems that they are trying to make them last on calendar to the last drop.
the 2 offers they had were.
1-EADS, who offered very limited technology transfer necesary to do the overhauls in peru, but the luftwaffe type (de-rating the engines to make them last long, radar upgrade etc, too easy) the other was.
2-RSK mig, who offered to do the whole thing but in russia without any techno transfer, wich was a very expensive and bad deal, FAP has tecnology to complete overhaul on M-5 and Su-22, airframes and powerplants, so why not the Migs???
these are some of the factors that have delayed the negociations.
and yes srbin, way too many different types from old mamouth size irrational times. 😉

    exacto dear srbin,
it seems that, “that’s the way it is for the moment”, we’ll see what’s next in due time.
by the way, in the next pic, i cant see what exactly is that “thing” attached the center fuselage (just below the left intake), it seems to be a gun pod of some sord?, never seen myself personally.
it’s a pleasure exchanging ideas with you srbin. 😎

that could be a good idea, let’s just see if the price between upgrading the M2k with “the russian right stuff” compared with upgrading the existing Mig-29 to SMT would make it a viable solution, to date i know that the M2k on FAP inventory can launch the israeli LGB on their inventory (i just dont remember the exact name, but it ain’t the spice)
