The Vimy departed Shannon on Friday heading for England, but bad weather caused them to make a precautionary landing in a cornfield outside Waterford. They were hoping to make an appearance over the Grand Prix at Silverstone tomorrow but it looks unlikely at the moment.

The flypast was practised over Duxford on Friday and is planned to go ahead on Sunday afternoon, weather permitting! It was touch and go on Friday on cloud base and crosswinds at Duxford. All the historic aircraft will launch from there.

Alan Cobham operated a ‘Flying circus’ which travelled the country giving air displays and joy rides to promote ‘Air mindness’ My mum and dad had a flight in an open cockpit biplane at one of these ‘Air Days’ at our local airfield. He pioneered air refuelling and the firm that bears his name is still a World leader in it. See:- http://www.cobham.com/index.asp?pageID=27&menuID=2_1_3

Regarding press coverage. Todays ‘Daily Mail’ has a page article on the original flight and the modern attempt. The Daily Mail offered the £10,000 prize for the first non stop flight that Alcock and Brown won.

I read in Airline World that Airbus favour getting the A319 certified to operate from LCY. The airport boss says that operating from the runway is possible but that ramp and taxiways would be a little cramped! It would enable much longer flights from LCY.

Nice shots of some rare planes. Is the plane on the left in the third shot, a Carvair? If it is the open door suggests it’s still in service?

If you are going to Ramsgate there is the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum and the RAF Manston History Museum both by the same car park on the airfield.
It is signposted from the Thanet Way. http://www.rafmanston.co.uk/index.html
Also don’t forget the Battle of Britain memorial at Capel Le Ferne (above Folkstone) It’s signposted off the dual carriageway. The URL link for it is off at the moment.

Peter,
Is the ultimate goal to ‘taxi run’ the Lanc or to be satisfied with engine runs?
