Why was the airport moved? To clear surrounding buildings, or because the ground was not solid enough? Usually the runway is used even if the terminal is moved to the other side, like Stansted.

Are you allowed to take an occasional photo in the hangar? Or is it forbotten. 🙂

Turweston is the fixed wing airfield for Silverstone isn’t it? Where will all their traffic go? It looks as if the Grand Prix is going ahead next year, if Ferrari agree.

On local TV at the weekend the parishioners of the church were shown celebrating because the church would not be moved after all. In Southend’s original proposals it was either move the church, realign the runway or shorten the runway. The third option would they said mean that large aircraft couldn’t land there and the maintenance firms would leave probably leading to the airport’s closure. Presumably it means that the runway will be realigned? This was the proposed plans.

The original ‘Crystal Maze’ was filmed in a hangar (Aces High?) at North Weald. May be this is too?

MAPS spent around 30,000 man hours on the Spit but they are all volunteers. I was told than the RAF Museum provide a budget for the work required, but it doesn’t always work out! They have just restored a Harvard to flight for a private owner, I expect that would bring in some funds. They do fantastic work in a couple of large sheds at Rochester. They are open on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday mornings to visitors, which reminds me I must go down there again.

Very interesting, thanks gents. He didn’t mention which squadron in the text, but thanked the 90 squadron association in the preface.
    Excellent book.

Manston is now a civil airport which has EUJet services to UK and European airports. See:- http://www.london-manston.com/
    There are occasional military movements.

    Pat
I took this pic of TB572 at Manston in April 1963, she was sat a short distance from the guardroom which in those days was within the airfield perimeter.

Is the control tower shown in the background still there?

The control is still there but a new tower was built much nearer the main runway after the grass crosswind runway was disused. The airfield boundary at that side is now along the public road that used to have traffic lights. These were used when aircraft were using the old runway. The old control area is now used for scrapping old airliners.
