Can anyone give a date when Duxford opened as a museum? I remember going there when Concorde and the TSR2 were on display. There was no M11 beyond Bishops Stortford. It was in March as I had holidays to use up before the end of the month!
I think it only opened during the Summer months then? Oh yes and Stansted was a quiet airfield with just a Ford Motor Co (111?) aircraft loading passengers while I sat and watched alone in the cafe! I know I must have some photos, probably slides somewhere.

Does anyone know who the pilots were who flew the Spitfires for the film? One of them would surely remember a ‘stunt’ like that!

Excellent photos Dave. Nice to see a museum as far from us as Duxford and Hendon are to you. The ‘pilots’ set off the ‘planes too. How many airframes are there in the museum?

I read an article by a pilot once that ambulance flights have operated in/out of Barra at night. I suppose it depends how desperate the situation is and if there is a moon? Can a SAR helicopter reach the island?

The caption says that it is an original one shot down in 1943, recovered in 1997.

I am not sure about the announced flight from Filton by AF though!

The aircraft was donated by the USA (USAF I believe) It was restored and flown across to the UK. I f I remember correctly its airworthy engines were swopped for Sally Bs (The UKs airworthy one) to keep her flying.

There is a guide here :-http://www.militaryairshows.co.uk/spitaw.htm
But a bit out of date?

I once heard an approaching flight refused permission to land because it would be 10 minutes late. It eventually landed at Southend. The agreement to build and operate LCY contained rules to limit noise, hours of operation and ‘quiet’ types of aircraft. Even after reopening on Sunday afternoon there are few inbound flights.

Caution! LCY closes from 12 noon Saturday to 12 noon Sunday!
Most of the runway can be seen from the river wall via the car parks. The apron can only be seen from the main road bridge over the dock, or the far side (but distant)
