Biggin has got a small enclosure just inside the gate but of course you cannot see the whole airfield.
When Rochester was taken over by the group trying to keep it open, they put up an enclosure by the main gate. When an airfield (big or small) is threatened and they want the locals onside this can help.
I have yet to see an enclosure at North Weald…..

I’ve bumped this back up as it got swamped in the forum crash over the weekend.
Is Prestwick really getting that busy again?

Very nice Gareth. Especially no 2.

If BAA want to make LGW and LHR more secure they should start checking passports properly. In the ‘Daily Mail’ Reporters flew in from abroad and hand their wife/ partner or photographers passport in and were waved through without a remark. The same trick at various foreign airports was picked up.

I would also bring a Spitfire 1A, AR213 ( G-AIST) It was the first Spit I saw up close, at Silverstone in the late 70s. It was owned by the Hon. Patrick Lindsay then and Tony Bianchi who looked after it gave a breathtaking display during the lunch break. I was a motor racing nut then but that day steered me back towards aviation.

Excellent photos Kenneth. A treat to see some rare types.

The RAF website has a report and photos of the ceremony and the RAF bearer party at the Menin Gate afterwards. See:-

Perhaps it will be the (true) story of Billy Fiske. Wealthy American playboy who used his connections to join the RAF and fight in the Battle of Britain. He was shot down and died and is buried in an English churchyard. When I read the story I said Hollywood couldn’t have made it up better.

I wonder how it will get off Jersey. By sea or air? Could a big transport (like a C17) land there?

Congratulations Ren you got your digital camera just in time!
Reading your sig. by line reminds me as a young English lad working in Glasgow in the 1960s I had terrible trouble getting our snack order. There was Gammon, Ham and Bacon which didn’t come out the same as down south……:)

Does anyone have a clear idea what is happening at North Weald
this Sunday ? (the 14th) Their website mentions a memorial service and fly in. Presumably the service takes place at the memorial by the museum and the fly in on part of the airfield but will they be connected?

Some years ago I used to see Il 76 aircraft at Manston with a glazed dome under the tail. I used to joke that it was a sun lounge for off duty crew! What it really was of course, a rear gunners position.
Some Aeroflot planes were fitted out for use in war and the fitting of (twin cannons?) was a simple defensive measure. The 747 at least has the APU exhaust in the way there. Pity 🙂

In Geoffrey Wellum’s book ‘First Light’ he is posted to 92 squadron. In answer to the adjutant and S/Q Roger Bushell’s questions. He gives the following details.
169 hours total flying time, 95 solo.
Did not finish final course on Harvards.
Has not seen a Spitfire, let alone flown one!
After a check ride in a Magister he gets his first flight in a Spitfire
a couple of days after the squadron lost four pilots on their first day in battle over Dunkirk.
Oh yes and he was just 18 years and 10 months old.
