Thomas Midgley, a guy from Ohio, world would have been a safer place without him, for everybody!

He discovered tetrealthyl lead, used in fuel, and then this stuff was incooperated in everything from cans to waterstorage tanks 🙁

The fecker knew it was dangerous, but still supported the large lobby to keep lead in all those products…

But thats not all, to improve fridges our dear friend Midgley invented chlorofluorcarbons, CFC, that lovely stuff getting rid of the ozone layer. It just took us 50 years to realise this….

Dont know if he regretted all this, but he should

the main reason (AFAIK) why the VVA-14/14M1P was cancelled was because it failed to take off from water.

According to red star volume 8 about these lovely WIG machines Bartini had his own design bureua, but the aircraft was produced at the Beriev plant, because he did lack production facilities. 2 machines were build, although only one flown. The second was never finished, but used for small scall tests, so it could well be true that there is the second one is rusting away at the taganrog plant.

At first the aircraft was flown without liftjets and floats. The lift jets never caim availeble and so they decided to include another two D-30V engines on the front fuselage and then fit the floats on the first machine. In this version the WIG was nothing more then a fast boat, since it could never create enough ground effect to be out of the water completly, this resulted in its final cancelation.

just returned from China myself (had a short holiday for about 2 months overthere, nice country, loved Urumqi)

Arthur, might advice to rent a motor with sidebuggy (zijspan). Saw a guy in the middle of nowhere (Xichang) driving around one of those. He rented it in Beijing and did a tour of the country in 3 or 4 months he told me. Plenty of space for lugage and still quite manouvrable. Off course I didn’t ask where I rented it. ( I remember a place in beijing where they sold them, also second hand, but that doesn’t really help you either now does it)

So this has been a rather useless post……

it was a free launch. (meaning payed by the Russian Gov)

Overall Russian ICBMs have a 92% rate of succes, but it seems the R-29 has some problems lately with their reliability….

    sad case…………

    gosh

really, you would suppose service would be for free, then again, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

I actually considered working in India for a callcentre for a while, I don’t mind the **** wage, and its a change from Dublin. There are certain human resource companies that hire westerns for Indian callcentres (how is that for outsourcing)

    Errr just one thing

Which sollid engine or which Russian missile or design would this be copied from. As far as I know only the most recent missiles (Topol and Topol M) feature sollid feul engines. All main russian ICBMs used liqued fueled engines.

I don’t know about the SRBM and IRBM though, maybe they used sollid fueled engines….

    about the callcentres

Just finished working for a callcentre (dutch language though) in Dublin, grrreat fun

I have a solution to the british problem of Indian call centres, what the companies should offer is the following introduction.

“Your call will now be forwarded to India, if you prefer to speak to an telephone operator in the UK, please press 9, you will be charged 1.10 pound a minute though”

So there you go, either 20 minutes on the phone with India for free, or with an English agent, but you have to pay……

    Cheers
