And with the F35 (that is going to evolve) the case for the Tempest is really to support UK’s aerospace industry & influence not much so to bring a new capability (or marginaly).
The situation is quite different for the countries that are not part of the F35 program, there is more urgency for them to move forward…Not only to support their industry but to remain relevant as an air force.
Sweeden, Japan, Italy seems possible partners to me. The question of partnership is of prime importance so that this project can move forward.
Some defense journalists in France make an alternative scenario if UK search of partnerships fails : to put pressure on France and germany to join their program in a good position.
It seems to me that UK are making a bet that with initial funding & vast PR communication on the project it will gain enough momentum to convince partners to join the program and keep moving forward. They have to make the “tempest program” as credible as possible to create the necessary confidence to invite other nations willing to join.
Even if there is a genuine political will for the UK to demonstrate that they remain a tier 1 nation in military aircrfat design after the Brexit, without one or two major partners joining, some important adjustments will have to be made.
I also hope this is not the final design, too close to other conventional 5th gen designs and somewhat not up to date compared to NG/LM/Dassault/Boeing 6th gen proposals.
not sure to see your point and I don’t think it is true. Anyway some work and thought have gone into it, it is not a random attempt.
I think it is out of Catia, look at the video.
You qualified in use of the Eyeometer now as well eagle1?
Eyeometer is perfectly relevant when the difference is so obvious. It is sufficient to grasp some key caretcteristic attributes. We are not talking about eye measuring radius turn in degree etc…
I think the F35 fans are over reacting. The F35 demo is fine and the FCS and engine do a great job extracting the best possible performance out of this airframe. But in the same time you can still feel the limit of having a high wing loading (due to high fuel fraction & volume for internal weapons). Every fighter jet is a flying compromise and the F35 is no exception.
Frankly the F35 is already meneuvrable enough and I would rather make some compromise on “energy conservation” and have true stealth instead. I am not an F35 basher, I just want to make a fair assessment.
There was indeed quite some dead time between agressive maneuvres to regain energy. Other 4th gen jet can perform many more maneuvres in the same time frame. Video editing only shows the most dramatic moments. F35 high wing loading means that in an agressive maneuvre it reaches high AoA very quickly bleeding a lot of energy. F35 powerful engine and good FCS somewhat compensate that but there is no miracle in the end.
UK are unveiling a full size mock up of its next gen fighter next monday that will eventualy compete with the Franco-German initiative. They are also looking for partners. The project is called “Tempest”
Just some thought from a neutral (as regard SU-57 vs F22) observer.
I think SU-57 design is brillant and looks very capable to me, it should match or exceeds the F22 in aerodynamics and perhaps kinetics with the new engines.
However I am not completely convinced by SU-57 stealth. The overall design is brillant but the manufacturing looks dated compared to F22 and F35 (riveting/apparent metal, canopy etc etc).
It seems to me that the SU-57 is some kind of a “budget 5th gen fighter” with some key attributes but without overinvesting in stealth or sensors. A more cost efficient approach than the west.
Like a Dacia Duster which is a lot of a car for the price in its own category to attempt a comparison.
24 more rafales for Egypt likely after the visit of Egyptian Mindef in Paris.
According to La Tribune, the ITAR issue with the Scalp missiles has been solved. 1) US agreed not to block the sale anymore after discreet negociations during last French president visit to the US 2) Work is underway so that the SCALP will be fully ITAR free
I am sorry but this is not the state of affair. I am clearly giving some hard hints about what’s going on here and I have reported here and on SPF some more materials. Lullabies whispered into some Parisian cabinets won’t change a single thing. Let’s hope that someone with at least a dregree in accountancy has an eye on what France spend into that.
France would have had a chance if an entire industry won’t have turned its back to the modernity of aerial combat a decade and a half ago. EoA
I still believe you have not been following this process closely enough and that your are arguing for the sake of arguing which is quite boring. That has nothing to do with imaginary French Cabinet but what is published in the Belgium press right now (today). No need to rely on French sources.
I think you are just poorly informed : it is the waloons who are insisting to consider the rafale proposal outside of the bidding process and the Flemish who are advocating to stick with the bidding process that fit their agenda to favor the F35. The fact that Lockeed plans to work with Waloonie just like Dassault or Eurofighter Gmbh does not change this reality, you are beside the point.
It is pointless to give instances of radar as nor you nor me have the actual figures, this type of discussion will lead nowhere. I am just putting into perspective the output argument, not dismissing it.
I think you have a poor understanding of the political situation in Belgium. Those who have a voices support either rafale proposal (the Waloons) or the bidding process (the Flemish). There is no consensus and the last statement from NVA is a testament of that. Frontal opposition to the Waloons that are willing to consider the French offer.
The current process has been tweaked by the Flemish side to favor the F35 (especially the curent Belgium Mindef), this has been the assement made by France to propose a strategical partnership instead of sticking to the so called “official process” and this assessment is shared by many in the Waloon side of Belgium. That’s why the rafale proposal will be officialy considered as well as extending F16 remaining service life…At least that’s the position of the Waloons which is not agreed by the Flemish.
The current process is far from being consensual even within Belgium. It is far from being neutral and behind this competition there is a strong fight between the Flemish and the Waloons. The Flemish want to be close to the Netherlands > F35 and the Waloons want to be close to the French > rafale. Each side try to play their card…The Flemish card was the bidding process as they have one of their own as Mindef but after legal investigation the waloons side said French offer can be considered.
