I can confirm that the object that you saw was definitely a UFO! 😉

No doubt it’s got to be Come and See, or Иди и смотри.

A film that I have been aware of for years…..but have still failed to see!

I wonder if it has ever even been shown on British TV.

I have a problem with films such as Dr Strangelove, Oh What a Lovely War and Catch 22 because despite being anti-war they try to get that message across by ridiculing the conduct of war; war is ridiculous but that doesn’t mean war is avoidable or that people shouldn’t fight. Possibly these are the only type of anti-war films that could be made under the circumstances because all films must attract an audience and that audience want to be entertained.

Born on the 4th July would get my vote; a war film so ‘good’ that I don’t like to watch it.

That’s the real trick isn’t it, how do you make entertainment that shows the reality of war? In reality for every glorious movie battlefield death there would be at least two men horribly, permanently maimed or disfigured but these are almost never seen in the movies. Born on the 4th July does not shy away from this taboo aspect of the war movie and also (to his credit) involved a major star.

Another creditable anti-war movie is Gallipoli and what about MASH which interestingly became a major TV series, although for a series about a combat surgical hospital it somehow manages to gloss-over the actual casualties. In fairness I suppose it had to or it would never have been made or seen on prime-time TV.

I didn’t realise that the Royal Navy memorial on Plymouth Hoe had been targeted earlier in the year.

I don’t know the Manchester memorial but if the well-known and very public one on Plymouth Hoe can be attacked over two nights there seems little hope for the nation’s memorials.

I remember reading years ago a book by a Canadian in Bomber Command who was paid almost exactly double what his RAF room-mate was paid. They were both pilots of identical rank but presumably the Canadian pilot was RCAF.

The Canadian also said that the situation was ‘resolved’ by his room-mate borrowing almost exactly half the difference between their salaries every week!

    I can’t remember the author / book.

Irresponsible complaining can wreck programmes…..my enjoyment of ‘Strictly Holly Willoughby‘ was completely ruined by some misguided objection to the manner of her dress…

…following her change to more modest attire I was appalled to discover that what I had been watching was apparently about…

    …ice-skating! 😡

And 40,000 plus were killed by in automobile accidents. We better control the cars better too

In the past 5 years alone there have been around a thousand deaths in Philadelphia, PA alone.

A thousand deaths due to guns…..or cars?

I’m not an American, I don’t live in America and I rarely visit, so American gun laws don’t concern me (apart from the human tragedy of course). Would tighter gun control reduce the number of gun-deaths? Yes, certainly but they wouldn’t be eliminated altogether; over half US gun-deaths are suicides (not a widely known or publicized fact).

The simple fact is Americans have guns because they want guns.

Did either Obama or McCain have a policy of much tighter gun-laws? I don’t know but I doubt it.

Probably not as suicidal as it sounds…..the Germans weren’t in Africa until 1941.

Does anybody know any more details; presumably the Bombay was lost on a conventional (night?) bombing operation?

For those who don’t know, in opposition to the rather harmless wildlife we have in europe (thanks to centuries of hunting), on the north American continent, you are still susceptible to encounter a bear, a mountain lion, or some other sort of similarly entertaining animal in your neighborhood.

So, it would be nice for people here to put things in perspective before criticizing other’s cultures…

    I agree…

Five people were killed by bears in the US in 2005…..but 30,694 people were killed by guns.

Back on topic I’m predicting John McCain will win the US presidential election.
