This (original) subject has just been raised on Recreationalflying.com.au so I’ve put up a link to this thread. You just might get a few new members from it.

I don’t believe it. Not that your government or airforce chiefs want to close yet another station, but the fact that after filling in the first page of the petition, I go to the next and am asked to pay for my support. Unreal.

Guess what, You don’t have my backing now.

PS I’m ex RAF, ex Leuchars.

Not so sure that it’s taking off, rather rolling off the top of a loop. It appears to be fixed u/c and twin stabs. Could be a Eurocoupe?

Charles, thanks for such a full round up of the state of the game. I appreciate the hard work that you and your small team have put in so far. For those who have never worked on a Lightning, or other old war bird for that matter, the infrastructure and ancillary equipment used is enormous and is often over looked. I’m surprised that so much of it still exists as it could so easily been considered as junk and simply tossed into the recycler.

Looking at the picture of Pip behind the bullet bought back very fond memories. As a radar techie, I often had to squeeze in there to kick the bullet out, they were forever getting stuck. Worse still was getting the top loading plug ‘shells’ to go in or get them out. The slightest bit of miss-alignment and the battle was on. BTW, there’s a snow balls chance in hell that I could get in there now.

Due to the demise of Thunder City in South Africa, is there a chance you might be able to procure so of your needed items? Such a pity what happened down there. I hate to think what will happen to that collection as non of the aircraft has any significance in S.A.

Anyone know where I might get my hands on a Lightning control stick for my ultralight (that I may build one day)?

    Good luck gang. Doug.

PS, does your radar work by any chance, or did the RAF remove the attack computer before selling her off?

That’s a heck of a speed. I certainly have no desire to travel on anything that goes that fast. You’d almost be back before you left.

Bring it on, I’m sick of the 24hr+ Oz to UK. I’ll gladly accept the discomfort for 2 hours.

Count me in, but you’ll have to pay my air fare to get there. :diablo:

Thing is, how many aviation museums can you have and stay viable?

Ah Rayleigh Rockets, I remember them well. Noise, dust and the smell of hot Castro oil (think that’s the correct spelling) Happier days.

As an ex Lightning techie (firstly radar then retrained nav inst) I fully understand all your wishes for this Lightning to be saved. I haven’t followed the full thread but I get the gist that she is complete and worth a bit of effort, time and money to save. Obviously she can’t be flown out, mores the pity, so how about approaching the Brunty boys to come over, remove and seal the engines, replace all panels ready for a BIG chopper lift out. The money required to hire a SkyCrane, or whatever they call them could be raised from interested parties etc. I’m no logistics man but with enough brainpower from you guys, I’m sure she could be moved safely and without the need to be ‘cut’ for road transport. If I had the money, it would be yours.

Do you mind if I sit while I wait? 😀

Ah, that’s not nice. I may be an Aussie now but the UK has designed and built many GREAT aircraft. Or is it that you believe there’s no one left in the UK that could make a decent decision?

There’s quite a bit of ‘tongue in cheek’ suggestions here so I’ll add my 2 cents worth.

BRING BACK THE TSR-2 and prove to the world that England can still design and build better aircraft than the yanks. Christ, even Concorde would have been better without French involvement.

Love the thought of squadrons of Lightnings flying again but they’d need some serious updating, perhaps the swing wing version.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see a Javelin flying again. There must be enough left to get one complete and air-worthy.

I don’t know what nationality they are, but did you notice he put the ring on her right hand
