    Mine was a Ralaye Commodore, tug plane from the London Glidiing club in about 1975. It had been hired by someone to look for a radio controlled glider that he had lost on Ivanhoe beacon, and as the two back seats were empty the pilot invited us to go along.

    Hi Stuart,

    I was told once that with one type of Bugatti car there are more around today than were actually built in the 20’s! Whats has allegedly happened is as parts were junked during restoration, other collectors have aquired them and based new restorations on the junked parts.

    I also spoke with a Tigher Moth owner/restorer who had a full kit of parts, upon contacting the Moth Club in order to establish its identity he was informed that the fuselage’s id was already a flyer, and the wings belonged to an example which was approaching first flight.

    Makes you think.

    Yes it has been done, the Edgley Optica was powered by a ducted fan, as was an experimental version of the Islander (reistration G-FANS?). Doubtless there have been others.

    Hi,

    I saw a copy at Luton Aviation Enthusiasts Fair, can’t remember how much but not cheap; however I think I’m right in saying there is a newer volume out on ‘Pioneer Aviation’ edited by Phillip Jarret which I do eintend buying on day.

    Couldn’t agree more, but what really annoys me is the change of format for the Putnam books, I still find the old size very convenient. And yes they are invarriably my first port of call to answer any question.

    The other books I find invaluable are PSLs Action Stations series.

    Asp are you suggesting that XL391 was turned into margarine tubs that were then used to restore the bannana?

    Steve.

    PS. and no I don’t begrudge India there fourth Spit, in actual fact I find it heart warming that they care enough to undertake this restoration.

    I also remember something called ‘Tales of the Gold Monkey’ that had a Gruman Goose and Rodey McDowell in it.

    Two ‘awful’ ones I recall;

    ‘The Aeronauts’ – French Mirage pilots dubbed into angliais and some tat from America call ‘Spencer’s Pilots,’ does anyone else remember these gems?

    On a lighter note, another of my interests is ornithology and some years ago we were at the Fowlmere reserve on the same day as a big display at Duxford.

    Fowlmere was being used as a holding area for the participants, I don’t know if is still used as such. And so we were treated to an liesurley ‘unscripted dog fight’ between Bf109 Black 6 and a Spitfire Mk9, and various warbird pilots just indulging themselves, absolute magic and totally free….
