already we see that variety is the spice of life. The f16/mig29/su27 type aircraft have wings with relatively low aspect ratio and do share some of the qualities of the delta wing, including better unit lift at high alpha and mach drag onset delay due to sweep. These wing forms are better than pure deltas in one repsect, they produce less drag at high angles of attack, thus they also bleed speed at a slower rate than pure delta’s, which is handy.

Pure deltas have their uses tho, and if its lift at low speed you want then delta’s do it best. (if we are looking at a combat aircraft which is robust (ie simple!!)).

The F-22 is a developed stealth/LO design and is so for all sorts of reasons, I could go on, but its probably just best if you nod and agree….it gets boring otherwise!

canards are of course, also a trade off, and are specifically useful in offering greater agility in the turning regime, ie WVR combat.

the hunter/gnat/provost stayed at filton because the weather looked thoroughly bleak down your way, how did that affect the pfa rally?? bit of a washout (excuse the pun!! )

thanx for the piccies didnt realise a pretty stearman like that lived there!

frankly the IS jags will perform little or no better than the english or french (or ecuador etc etc….) aircraft. The main aim of these strike aircraft is hit and run, not to stick around and get hit by amraams (which is what will happen in the majority of cases )

this thread is nice and interesting keep it up!!

would love to see them come back via fairford but we are just not that lucky!!

do you realise that darkstar or a version of darkstar exists out there??

I thought that this project was doing well ,and it certainly wouldnt seem likley that a major aerospace company in this day and age would produce an aircraft like that with serious defficiencies, its one of the easiest to design!

yes this went quiet very quickly, then a report in a mil av magazine mentioned that intelligence from an undisclosed aerial vehicle had been used for afghanistand and iraq…..darkstar was mentioned.

not ‘trigger happy’ at all, the crew believed their systems, and the systems said there was an ARM heaing straight for them ,and with less than a minute to decide what do you do???

I agree that a SAM battery of any kind should not be allowed to operate minus appropriate comm’s for the task.

    a tragic accident.

considering money and ‘other’ collateral passed to the US by UK in this and other stealth projects we better not get a bloody ‘export’ POS version…..another waste of millions.

i cant tell you anything in particular about the systems or the methods/applications, but it is common knowledge that there are plasma-stealth projects under way (and have been under way for a good deal of time).

It has been considered and tested on whole aircraft.

I wouldnt be foolish enough to think that russia are on their own in this field.

It has been proven that plasma beams can make excellent antenna’s that can be recalibrated in micro seconds to suit different purposes.

I have seen information and footage which proves a major reduction in acquisition range for a cold war generation aircraft when applied only to the radar antenna of the aircraft…..this is not the only place it can be applied, in areas only to provide a reduced detection range….ie increased LO.

this system can be used on any aircraft at any time, and may not be used in the course of day to day operations.

switching the system on and off is not a problem, it can be achieved in fractions of a second.

it is possible therefore that the returns during the short period of em activity from the plasma equipped aircraft could be filtered out by other aircrafts radars.

Other approaches have been found better/more practical to disguise munitions.

given the flexibility of this system, its ease of use, its versatility in terms of times of use, and how it can be used to make a low observability aircraft, from ‘normal’ aircraft. It is not useless, it can be effective, and combined with IR systems, it makes an aircraft MUCH more lethal. It doesnt need to cover the aircraft.

there are other ways of achieving the same aims, in the antenna area.

theres some food for thought, certainly made me think when i was writing my dissertation up!!

as an edit, after reading garys post above……I can think of at least one way that would make plasma stealth useless…….

i would rather common sense be employed, the number of terrorists since sept 11th hasnt grown massively

this sort of thing is idiotic, and the staff involved, who deliberately deface other peoples (and the states) property should be sacked and officially charged.
