For less than half that, you can push F-22 up to 500 airframes.

I am all about downsizing the USAF if the airframe count can put out incredible killing power. I say cancel it, get rid of all A-D F-15s, half ( the smaller engine ) F-15Es, Even then you still have F-117s to carry any special door kicker 2000lb weapon work that first night. Otherwise an F-22 with either 2 1000lb JDAM or several SDBs is very very dangerous: Consider:

First night-

F-22, F-117 ( only 2ooolb work as needed if at all ) B-2, A-45 UCAV ( from land or from carriers ) , JASSM, ( converted Ohio class with mucho Tomahawks ) . ( look at the low number of aircrew used )

Later- Yup F-22 for some CAS with SDB. Why?? FAST response time to the GFAC. Fast cruise=more sorties per day.

F-22 with SDB should be a big player in some special ops support ( fast in and out / survivable )

Legacy jets combined with A-45, F-15E, F-16, F-18, B-1, B-52, A-10, would still be used, as needed for bomb truck work that wasn’t facing a stiff AD.

All that can be done, and done well without JSF.

No offense but if there are no foreign buys of JSF, that doesn’t bother me one bit.

This aircraft is a step change in aircraft design. it will be like no other LO aircraft(including what i feel will be a more fragile F22) , so comparisons would be pretty lame.

Well for the US anyway. Even the full up JSF will be the “buick” of steath. Not bad but not perfect. As for the F-22, it would certainly be a better, more survivable deep striker, as it’s speed allows for a complete contempt of engagement. The JSF being slower could be at serious risk if it suddenly becomes “naked” in a RCS combat event. We’ll see.

JSF still has to get over “work share” issues. Norway is complaining about this. Workshare is based on “best value” of the vendor NOT by the fact that you put down some cash to be part of the team. Somehow the fine print wasn’t explained to the politicians. So far Austrailian companies have picked up a number of JSF workshares. Yup they have a quality aerospace industry of sorts, and apparently won the work on “best value”.

A real JSF ( not a concept demonstrator ) is yet to fly. And it has gone way over budget. ( up to $245 billion for the whole program ) I think. So it has a lot of surviving to do. Could get real interesting.

I don’t think I would be a JSF partner if I found out I was going to get a downgraded JSF.

As for the U.S.; be nice if we cancelled it. I can kill more with F-22, B-2, X-45 UCAV, JASSM, Tomahawk etc. On the first night of a war without JSF and save money.

I would rather see more money put into the X-45 program. After a air defense network is beaten down, then conventional, non-stealth, “legacy” designs are good enough to do bomb truck work. With modern PGMs, that can be almost any common fast mover.

Hardly a “Joint” jet. 3 models now plus a fouth downgraded export model. Good luck. The last effective Joint Strike Fighter was the F-4 Phantom.
