After doing some serious looking into the Vixens wing, to my relief we have found that the wing fold jack is ok and it’s the sequencing valve that has split, which means we can still fold the wing by hand pump, thus enabling me to repair the valve.

Over the last week or so, more work that I have done is making the Vixen look so much better. I spent a considerable amount of time at home reproducing the panel markings on my PC to great effect! In the days of the Vixen, most information markings on the airframe were decals and not stencils, so I have made hundreds of decals to replace the ones that were worn away or completely lost, of which all were done through the use of my own manual which was a god send.

We have also now got ‘Red Tops’ fitted and it give’s Vicky a more aggressive look. All ‘KEEP OFF’ markings are on the top of the engine covers and the red cross and square markings I am currently in the middle of doing.

All in all, she’s looking fabulous!!

    Pete,

Thunderchiefs (i.e. F-105s) were never based in the UK. I guess you are thinking of the F-84 Thunderjet, which certainly was at Wethersfield with the 20th TFW before the F-100.

We (being the Midland Air Museum) look after and maintain an F105D Thud that is a gate guard at RAF Croughton near Newbury along with an F100 Super Sabre.

The Thud is a big jet and we are hoping that the US boys will finally hand it over to the museum pretty soon  fingers crossed, but I feel they may say no and scrap it!!

I’ve read a section in a book on Corsairs about Pappy Boyington and his escapades as a pilot and then his historical moments as the boss of the ‘Black Sheep Squadron’ and found it to be one of the best WWII documented events ever, next to the Battle of Britain of coarse!! 😀

How high would a “simple” tripod gantry have to be Rob?

ie distance ground up to hinge + distance hinge to wingtip + allowance for block and tackle.

    Just thinking out loud 🙂

    Roger Smith.

Not too sure Roger to be honest. We’ll need at least a couple of feet clearance from the wing tip at 90 degree’s, but the wing itself from hing to tip is about 16 feet, so it would need to be at least 20 feet high my friend.!

Are the wings in the locked position, or merely down?

They’re not locked in place as far as I know, but could easily unlock them if need be by what the manual says. It also shows the wing being hoisted through 90 degree’s via a slinging system on a hoist. A hiab will probably be able to lift it but we have a problem with the airport regarding the use of cranes and the such, plus also the cost of hiring such a vehicle for a quick job like that will not be cost affective for the museum’s budget!

These are both idea’s that will work though. If any other idea’s are out there though…………………….

Thanks Robmac. Best wishes on her work I can see her now lights shining brightly, flexing her wings in the sunshine!

One of the problems I have to sort out before I can even think about folding the wings is a damaged hydraulic hose on the main wing folding jack on the port side of the aircraft.

Having very limited access to the jack, with the wing in the down position, is causing quite a headache for me. The ideal position for me to change the pipe would be with the wings folded, but because of the ruptured item, no hydraulic pressure can be pumped into the system cause it just leaks out again. So, the only way to do this repair is to either, remove the skin on the upper surface of the wing, removing 250 odd screws to do so, or, manually lift the wing up and past 90 degrees and jury strut it to the fuselage……………this is a 1700lb wing and cannot be lifted by hand, so until a suitable system can be devised, that is failsafe for obvious reasons, I’m b**g***d!!!!

Any idea’s??? Anybody got a Sea Vixen with the same problems, if so, please share your thoughts………..someone come up with an idea for me, make it easy, help me out…….. 🙁 😀

Is their a Red Bull G-CVIX tech operator here per chance??? 😀 😀

a couple of tanks and some Red Tops under the wings, power up the catapult and away to go.

We have some restored Red Tops that are going on her very soon and we have one fuel tank kindly donated by the Red Bull guys at Bournemouth, the only problem I have is how we get it to the museum? All we need now is a second tank and we are flying.

Hopefully she will be in a near working state soon…………fingers crossed! 😀

    Squadron Badge/Hydraulics

Over the last few days, some tinkering has been done on 685 and the squadron badge has been painted on both sides of the tail booms. Although the picture just show the Yellow and white disc of the badge, the Witch has also been painted on both sides. I forgot to take a picture before I left the other day, but as soon as I can, I will and post it here.

Looking at other parts of the airframe has been very pleasing indeed. There is very little in corrosion on the Vixen and what is damaged is minimal and can be repaired. The observers hatch being a classic example as before I worked on it, the lower section of the hatch was badly pitted and the edge corroded away considerably. You can see now in the picture it looks undamaged.

The undercarriage bay of the Vixen houses the main hydraulic tank and charging points for the whole hydraulic system and the condition of the pipes, joints and connections are all in excellent condition making it more and more positive about possible system operation on certain controls, following a good safety check. Providing EVERYTHING passes, we could operate possibly the wing fold. This is all a very long way though, but it’s looking good.

    MAM Javelin Website

    Mark’s site link for you…..

Thought I would pop in here and see how things are. Been away for a while (again) with some issues that keep me from my beloved Hunter 🙁 and a distinct lack of internet for a month didn’t help either…

Best I get back up there before Rob “tackles” my Hunter project which is handily right next to his Sea Vixen….. 😮

Don’t worry Pete, I’ll never have to tackle the Hunter. It has already had an overhaul by Malc and Gordy 😀

Nice pictures Atlantic1. It was nice seeing the DH out the other day. It was also good to see the Dakota in RAF markings fly out this morning too.

Keep it up my friend 😉

    Well done guys looking good!
I seem to remember that the F6 Lightning was owned by a business man and that he left it there on loan, I recall speaking to him one year at a ‘wings and wheels day’ is this still the case and does he still look after it?
    Alan.

It was a business man’s originally but couldn’t find anywhere else to keep it. He never did anything to it as he never really had the time so he donated it to us, so I believe.

Is Rob’s bromide for the safety of the local wildlife then?

The spilt paint, thinners and fag butts have threatened all the wildlife, so the bromide is my source for the silver paint you see on our aircraft 😀

Anyway, here’s a few more shots of the Frightning and the Mystery Machine!!
