Anyway, talking of painting, here she is after what work was done on WS838 today.
The underside still needs to be painted on the base of the fuz and under the starboard wing. She looks great 😀 😀
I had a chance to visit MAM a few back and I still have great memories of the collection…
It seems that they have a great repaint program in place…and yes many museums could learn a few lessons on keeping their airframes in good nick…
Do you paint with a paint brush or/and roller?
Trade secret that 😀 😀
Or better still the manual for a Meteor NF14. It just so happens I have my own one of those too! 😀 😀
Nice…….looks like I’ve found a home for those book tokens I was given for my birthday. 😀
Do you think it contains a fair amount of technical based info
Kev. 🙂
The book I have if your into that is the SAM Pub. The Gloster & AW Meteor. It full of technical diagrams.
😀 Also comes in camoflage 😀
Sorry Rob, I try to remain positive and will support anyone that restores an aircraft authentically, but there are exceptions!
Ok…….I don’t know the reason for the Hunter, it was done before I was a member……..the Dove however I did the work on myself with a couple of other members. The reason for the change in colour scheme for this aircraft is simple……..it was sponsored, by Dunlop! The airframe G-ALCU, as you rightly pointed out, was in diar need of a repaint and Dunlop, as you will know, had a DH Dove, registered G-ALVD back in the 50’s. Having had relations with Dunlop before, MAM was to repaint our Dove, into the markings of G-ALVD because Dunlop agreed to sponsor the repaint and kindly donated the funds to do it, an oppertunity not to be turned down by us.
A huge presentation was held after the completion of the Dove with Dunlop and the company managed to find some of the original crew who flew the original G-ALVD, who were overwhelmed by the Dove’s appearance. Overall, a complete success on the museums behalf and very good PR for us as we made the papers with the event.
The Dove’s spec. plaque states that the registration of the aircaft is not authentic, but does tell you what the aircraft is actually registered as.
As for the Saudi Lightning, I don’t know why the flag is not being painted on, but I do know that for whatever reason it is, it must be a valid reason for it not to be done 😉
Here we go again!!!!
What about the Shacklebomber ?
mick
I think you should be grateful with whats already lined up…..I am 😮 😀
Sorry, just a bit of teasing towards Rob on my part, he’ll get his own back, one of these days 😮
You wanna be careful Kev, spending all this time on the internet………your missus might ban you altogether :diablo: 😀
It is right what Kev says though about all your comments, it is good to have positive feedback from others, cause it helps incourage us to continue and the more popular we are getting, the more visitors it attracts through the door and for us at MAM, that is the biggest contributing factor in us keeping the museum alive……….if it weren’t for them, we would not be able to do what we do today, so a very big thank you too you all 😀
I didn’t post this on here to have an arguement over it, but to share an interest in aviation matters at the museum. If this is the kind of reaction I’m going to get here all the time when I post about our projects, I’m not going to bother any more, as I don’t see why I should waste my time, just to have other people on here constantly put down what I’m, or the museum, are doing.
This is a general aviation forum to discuss aircraft issue’s on a friendly basis. I feel that these sort of matters should be reported to Key Publishing so they can deal with it and if it means the removal of certain members in the forum or the complete closure of the forum, then it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest as it won’t stop my work and enjoyment at the MAM 🙁
I know what you was saying about the yellow David and I have to admit, it is a colour scheme that stood out, but we repainted her at least 5 times in our hands in yellow but it would not work. We were informed by the museum that she served with 64 sqn at Duxford when she first came into service and it was agreed that this scheme would be a better option, giving our difficulties maintaining the airframe in yellow, so it was changed.
Maybe one day the option to repaint here yellow will arise, so long as the paint is good enough 😀
Here are a couple of pictures to show the folks interested in the re-paint of the NF14. As you all know WS838 has been in Night Fighter markings at the museum for a while now, of which without the RAFM help this would not of been possible 😀 😀 😀 😀
Her service at Bedford and Boscombe Down is as interesting if not more so than her career as a night fighter .
Night Fighter……thats the key word here.
This is an NF14 Meteor, a night fighter aircraft. An aircraft brought into service for fighting at night!! As Albert has already informed you, we have a problem maintaining aircraft with an all over yellow colour scheme. As we do not have the resources and facilities to spray our aircraft in proper military aviation paint, we have to make do with an alternative and unfortunatly the alternative is never going to be better so we have to live with it. The elements outside do not help, but we have found our camoflage airframes withstand the elements far better so this is the better option. Our DH Dove we painted in Dunlop markings no more than 18 months ago is already starting to fade in the light and will need attending soon.
At the end of the day, the work we put into our aircraft is 100% and we take pride in it to. A lot of people have commented on how well we preserve our aircraft and that we are a credit to the museum. That is the sort of feedback we like to hear, so your comment on it should be yellow is being ignored for now as regardless of what you say, people like what we’re doing to it and that is how it is going to stay. We’re not going to change the colour back to yellow because one individual thinks we should.
Thankyou!!
That looks like the front of a Douglas A20 Havoc.
Started the repainting process on WS838 today, but the weather closed in rather earlier than expected and forced me to stop, but what I’ve done looks ok! 😉
