    Gents,
The local MP ascertained whether the Reds would be canned, and guess what?? They’re safe for another year. See you in a year or so, so we can do this all over again…

I couldn’t agree more! Beautiful though they are, the Spitfires that leave Area 51 at Duxford have panel gaps that Mercedes can’t hold a light to! I wonder what has become if the lovely Dutch Mk9 Spit they received in 2007ish? It was covered in patina (many dings and dents) but was less like a new build for it.

I have a British sports car that will grow old gracefully, stone chips and all, because that is my desire. IF I owned a warbird, it’d be very well patina’d externally and immaculate under the skin…

The diamond tread pattern on BBMFs Lanc is a grass tread pattern. Yes, no problem with operation from grass.

Whenever the subject of disbandment arises one of the arguments for keeping them is always that industry pays a large portion of their running costs. Can anyone confirm that this is the case and to what extent the costs are subsidised. I have heard that tours are subsidised/paid for….

Yes this is true. Look at the back of the Reds brochure and you’ll see who the Reds are ‘in association with’ or ‘supported by’. BAe Systems pay a huge chunk toward any (sales) tours, and engineering support. It’s true that the MoD payroll the 100 or so people at the Reds and the PT’s. Like them or not, they operate a great British product that continues to be developed 40 years from the first flight. Big sales coups to overseas operators ensure we’ll see the Hawk for a long time yet, its a great export.
The RAF continue to recruit, and while the Force still exists, they always will. If you’re a young person and look up and see the Reds flying in formation, you may well be inspired to strive to become a pilot or to join the RAF, job done. I’ve seen plenty of school kids ignore flying Spitfires because “they’re slow”, “not loud enough” and “boring propeller thing” to quote a few. The Reds offer a bit more pizazz, more inspiration. And don’t get me wrong as I’m an ex warbird engineer too, and love those!
Long may the Reds continue. Long may the general public continue to support the RAFs last formation display team. ร‰clat!

Oi, naysayers!! Shut it, you keyboard bloody warriors. Unless you’re well connected, then keep your opinions to just that. Don’t slam the Mk1 Hawk, and try to predetermine its life on here. What FI are the current airframes on? And as for the Hawk reaching the end of its development, well hasn’t achieved an awful lot in almost 40 years of flying??? Britains greatest military aviation export perhaps? Bloody communist keyboard tossers.

I’ve been to F of F. I’d love to work there, but as an aside I’d love to see the Sunderland taken back to its original WW2 guise, restored to flight and Kermit take it on a World tour to promote historic aviation. Yep, that’d be great.

Great! We need more RAF marked Mustangs! An old friend of my Dads ended his RAF flying days in 1944 in a photo recce RAF Mustang flying down the Rhine. His last memory was after bring bounced by Luftwaffe fighters was the port wingtip of his high back P51 touching the water. His next recollection is waking up in a German hospital being offered a cigarette by the guy that shot him down. He’s still with us….

    David,
You’re a businessman and want to make maximum profit. Do you
    A) employ someone who demands the highest of wages?
    B) employ a person who will do an equal job for half the money?

    No brainer?

    YOU decide who A and B are…

Never mind that twaddle, why on earth is that trimotor going. Pump the oleos up (PLEASE, someone at Duxford go round with some nitrogen and pump up the legs on loads of exhibits) and get it back inside. Utter madness to part with it.
