As someone that was living near Waddington until quite recently, let me correct you all.

XL189 was the gate guard and it was still in the old camo scheme when it was scrapped in 89, the airframe that arrived with an onboard fire was XH669 and it was painted in the Hemp colour scheme and after sometime in the hangers for investigation (presumably) and after spares recovery it went onto the dump.

You’re quite right Tim, the old grey cells have been ill of late! It was XH669 I refered to in my earlier post. (Now edited)

    VX,

It was XH669 that landed with an o/b emergency (cockpit fire), and you are correct in stating that it was cut up in 1993. I have pictures somewhere of the end of the first days ‘mauling’ with JCB’s. I was stationed there at the time, and used to pop across to see it at quiet times. The cockpit had been burned quite a bit if I remember correctly, but probably more than likely due to fire training.

    Cadman,
The Victor in question had served its time well, and despite it’s career, it bowed out playing an important fire training role. Bear in mind that it was landed with problems when the Victor fleet wasn’t far from retirement. The incentive to fix it at that stage would have been low, unless it was VERY low houred from Major Maintenance. You can’t save everything, we’d have no pots and pans to cook with:D

    Sadsack,

The new Hawks have been test flown and the RAF is getting them. The Reds Aircraft are rotated through the fleet when fatigue starts to get high. I’m sure when they’re all tired, they’ll be replaced with the newer glass cockpit type, Reds and trainers.

The Shadow R1’s (Raytheon 300C (Aka King Air) will be going to Waddo as part of 5 Sqn, and the first has been staying over of late (G-JENC), but I BELIEVE that they will only be hangared for Maintenance in 3 Hangar. the rest of the time they’ll be out in the elements/operating enviroments, as with the Sentinel R1. 2 Hangar is still earmarked for the Reds and work will start on it soon.

    Message ends,

The Reds are due to move to Waddington in 2011/2012, and as for BBMF moving, why bother? The facilities they have are excellent, the pilots for the fighters are based locally, and the runways at Scampton need attention.

If we had the money in the UK/military, we’d have a superb facility centrally located with easy access to motorways with all the historics you could wish for. The BBMF would be no more, and simply called the RAF Historic Squadron, with types from SE5 to Phantoms and the locals would love it….Nah, it’ll NEVER happen. Don’t let me stop you dreaming though.

I don’t know who took the I-BILL photo’s but OHB was in Germany as Dornier were going to repaint her for free into 8th Air Force markings, never been able to find out what sceme was intended.

Can’t believe no one put the Black Knight T-33 up since it was mentioned in the opening post, taken at Blackbushe by Keith Butcher 1975.

Black Knight, thanks for posting the shot of I-BILL, looks just as I remember her!

Excellent post. Many of todays warbirds wore civilian schemes longer than the military schemes they started out with and should be remembered as such. I am certainly more interested in photo’s of Mustangs from the 50’s,60’s and 70’s in civilian schemes thant the endless parade of yet another USAAF theme.
I still remember vividly the day in 1977 when i saw my first Mustang up close,
I-BILL in it’s gourgeous yellow scheme.
Photo’s of warbirds in civilian scheme make the history that airframe went through to survive seem more interesting.

I have to say that I-BILL was a early Mustang memory for me. Wasn’t it a Cavalier Mustang with extended vertical stab (fin)? I think I saw it at Greenham Common in 1977. The memories are bleak, I was only 4!! 😀

    Any pictures of I-BILL?

Off topic I know, but is there any update to the Panton’s plans for NX611?

Having spoken with a member of the Panton family, the plan is to get her airworthy. It appears that the CAA are happy with the spar life on the aircraft, and the plan is to start work fairly soon. I’ll watch and hope.

This is a P-51D Mustang that once served at Duxford ?

There was a lot of controversy as to the identity of the aircraft as posted on WIX.

I don’t know WHAT it is, but I don’t think it’s a Beau (although similar at a glance).

I have to concur, the glazing ISN’T a Beau.

What a curious aeroplane the Leopard is. I remember seeing one at Bournmouth when I was there with the Sparrows, and thought how great a concept it was.

Can anyone expand the aircraft’s history?

    Hi Kurt,

Lubeck is in Holland, I think. a lot of Spitfire testing was done there just after the war especially with Spit PRXIX’s. is the XIV Clipped wing XIV or standard wing? low or high back?

    cheers

    mike

    Hi Mike,

the wings on the XIVs were clipped and it was def a low back. Some great info coming out, thanks all, please keep it coming.

    Kurt
