Just looked to see who he is–a motorcycle racer and lorry mechanic apparently.

    Philistine.

I am slightly saddened – I realise that my ten years working there were probably the best job I ever had. I would go back in a heartbeat. Ho hum..

    Bruce

Perhaps it’s time to submit your CV then? Unless you burned bridges?

This begs me to ask the question of just how much of the original aircraft was used in its ‘restoration’? Looking at the pile of corrosion that was shown during the programme, it looks like pretty well none of it, so why is the word restoration is being used?

Yes I find this odd too. I’ve no issue with a new build Spitfire and to paraphrase the show, it was used as reference material and salvageable parts were removed. I wonder if that means the data plate as I imagine all the fittings were equally corroded. I imagine the original material will have been recycled onto the TBH (?) website by now in the form of polished metal briefcases etc.
I love the work of the engineers at Duxford (and being part of that scene gave me a big insight, and I assisted with the restoration of Spitfire MkXVIII SM969 among others), but that wasn’t a restoration of a Mk1 Spitfire. That isn’t N3200 flying at the end. Like I say, I’ve no problem with it because I’d rather see a perfect representation of a Mk1 Spitfire rather than a container load of scrap.
Guy Martin (is local to me) and a great engineering talent. He’s also handy with a superbike. His enthusiasm is beyond doubt, but if you don’t understand what he’s saying, I recommend you travel around the country and listen to some wonderful regional accents.

The drilling I saw was of the lower engine mount taper bolts…

If you are going to play the ‘smart arze’ card, best to get your facts 100% correct, especially if you are masquerading as a moderator.

If Key have bought it, does it mean they’re going to use the same blunderbuss to fire articles at a page that they use in Flypast? If so, cancel my subscription. Flypast must appeal to those (and create) people with a short attention span, and has to rely on lots of blocks of colour with offshoots of the same story, incredibly dire artwork and pointless tat in between the advertising space. Flypast was once a brilliant magazine that has over the years been eroded to a shadow of its former self. How the mighty have fallen.

Mike – there certainly were ribs and stringers.

QUOTE] So am I correct in thinking there was an inner and outer skin then? Excuse my ignorance but I only ask because I don’t know.

Yes, there were inner and outer skins, along with internal ribs. They are quite sturdy affairs to deal with being opened and closed at speed.

The H75 pilot pushed a bit to much Negative G at the end of his display and the engine started spluttering and smoking. Re-started ok though.

That wasn’t the case at all. I was abeam the aircraft as it happened. It pulled up, positive G, and airspeed decreased more rapidly than normal. The pilot initiated a bunt, negative G, as the Hawk was very close to stalling, thus preventing a stall. After a puff of smoke from the exhaust, normal service was resumed, power applied and a normal landing undertaken.

About 20 years ago at the Waddington ACMI, a Belgian F-16 took the fence out with it’s main undercarriage. That silly old duffer on the ladders would have been decapitated at best or atomised if this had happened. I see the attraction, but as stated above, imagine how the parents of those kids would have dealt with that image and how screwed up there kids would be for LIFE. Short sightless and as it’s not MoD property, the RAF have NO responsibility to the public outside their boundary fence. People are just stupid.

I don’t know who the new owner is. I know it’s been for sale for a while.
